Pujols could generate at least 4 times the revenue Fielder could. I don't know what that # is though or what kind of impact it would have.

Revenue generation would be a pretty big deal, I don't know how to account for it, though. If management has the room to go after one of the two, though, and it's close, I could see revenue generation swaying them to spend more for Pujols.

You could use jersey sales as a high level baseline.

Something like: Pujols jerseys are 4x more popular than Fielder jerseys, so maybe Pujols generates 4x more revenue.

I really don't see Pujols leaving St. Lou. He loves the city and the fans too much, and even if they just couldnt pay him, I really dont see him jumping to their arch rivals. It would lead to Lebron-esque backlash. If not the Cards, he'll probably end up with the Angels, Dodgers, Yankees, or Red Sox, who WOULD find a spot for him if the opportunity arose. Maybe even Seattle or The Mets who always seem to spend big money to be bad. Maybe thats what The Rays are saving up for. My bet is that Pujols is extended by the Cards by the end of the season, leaving Fielder even more in demand and Scott Boras doing a happy dance.

I don't think he wants to leave the Cards but I do believe him that once Spring Training starts negotiations will be cut off and he will at least test the FA market. He has already taken a home town discount in his last contract and deserves to be paid like he is the best player in the game. The hardest part to gauge is how high St. Louis is willing to go, they have built this franchise the last 10 years or so around pitching. Are they capable of going into the $120-$130 million range in payroll next season. There revenue will not be changing, they will not be building a new stadium, how will they support a rise of payroll from around $90 million to over the new level in 1 year time. Really Pujols owes nothing to the Cards he has done enough for them, but I do think he respects them enough to where he would not sign with the Cubs just out of principle.

If he hasn't signed his extension in time and plays out the season without a new deal, I wonder what kind of reception he gets when he's at Wrigley this season?

And since there would undoubtedly be other options.

It's a nice fantasy for a rainy day though.

"Pujols defects to enemy, St. Louis in flames."

You know, with the upcoming talent of the minor league system, the payroll being reduced this year (money being saved back?), him being a "hometown" hero, and not much in the way of contracts past this year...maybe Albert Pujols is a future Kansas City Royal.

Okay, probably not.

I agree. the Cubs are more likely to be trading for Teixeira than signing Pujols in 2012, and yes I know Tex has a NTC.

nobody would get lebron-esque backlash. only lebron james is enough of a douchebag to generate that.

If Pujols went to the Cubs he would get a Lebron type backlash potentially worse. The rivalry is too big, and the St. Louis fan's would react worse than Cleveland's fans.

He might get that type of backlash from St. Louis fans, but the backlash wouldn't rival what Lebron got on a national level.

Agreed, the STL area would have that type of backlash but it wouldn't be nearly as big nationally as Lebron's. Pujols wouldn't do, or even get, a "decision" type of production either.

I do feel like the backlash might be worse locally. St. Louis has a lot more crazy hillbillies than Cleveland does

I'd love for the Cubs to sign Pujols, not just because he's good at baseball, but so I'd have a front row seat for the mayhem. These guys got all bent out of shape when Edmonds wound up on the Cubs.

Thats what I meant. More on the STL level, the national level would just laugh. There would be riots in STL, trailer homes would be flipped, '86 Oldmobiles would be set on fire, mullets would be shaved.

Seems to me that the backlash against LeBron is precisely *because of* "The Decision".

Pujols is the same caliber a superstar as LeBron, so it would stand to reason that if Pujols created a similar "look at me" circus, then he probably would get the same reaction nationally as LeBron did.

In addition to the "Decision", a lot of the LeBron backlash has to do with his inability to bring a championship to Cleveland -- a town of perennial losing teams.

Pujols led his team to a lot of wins and (ugh) a WS title.

No hope for Pujols, but I find myself rooting for us to sign Fielder. Big power, big OBP, big guy, athletic, and then there's the power.

:-k

Someone can be fat and still be athletic.

Pujols is no where near as publicly well known as Lebron is. The endorsements alone prove that. There's no doubt in my mind that if he left the Cards, they would have a bigtime backlash themselves. And the team that got him would be happy as hell.

The thing that separates Lebron from Pujols is this: When Lebron made his choice, he received instant hatred from everyone outside of Miami. It's just not going to happen with Pujols. Even if he did EXACTLY what Lebron did, on his way to becoming a villain, the bottom line is Albert Pujols just isn't nearly as big of a household name as Lebron is.

Posted
The biggest differences are that the money was the same from all suitors for LeBron, and Pujols won't have a TV special to say "screw you St. Louis". If Albert gets ESPN to do a special so he can announce he's taking less money to play for the Yankees, then maybe he'll approach the backlash LeBron got. But none of those things is at all likely.

According to ESPN, Pujols will veto any trade that the Cardinals may put forth if they can't sign him by the February 19th deadline, thus ensuring that if he's not signed by the time he reports for spring training, he will be a free agent.

That is, of course, if Pujols and his agent stick to their word. 21 days to go...
