Good article from Stark about Pujols/Cards. Alot seem to think he winds up at 8/240 with them.

What's the price tag?

Is it possible that Pujols is a $300 million man?

There has never been one in baseball history, you know -- not even Alex Rodriguez. But scuttlebutt from other clubs is that that's where Pujols and Lozano began the conversation.

Ten years. At $30 million a year. For a total of $300 million.

And when the folks on the Cardinals' side of the table regained consciousness, they said something to the effect of: "You're kidding, right?"

But Pujols is not kidding. He's coming off a seven-year, $100 million deal that has turned out to be exceptionally club-friendly. So if it seems to you that the only side you've heard mention the word "discount" was the Cardinals, you don't need to get your hearing tested.

"Albert's side feels like they've already given their discount," said an NL executive who has negotiated hundreds of contracts. "He's saying: 'Now it's my turn.'"

"He's a great, great player, and there's nobody quite like him," said an official of one AL team. "And the Cardinals know that if he gets to free agency, is there a player in baseball who would make more sense to the Cubs than Albert Pujols? So it's going to get crazy."

Now obviously, we have no idea whether the Cubs' new ownership is ready to start signing off on $300 million contracts. But the Cardinals can't be sure of that. And even if the Cubs don't drive the auction, does anybody honestly think Pujols won't have a market, just because the other big spenders -- the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers and Phillies -- appear all set at first base for years to come?

As much as I would love the thought of us signing Pujols and everything that would come with it, the thought of signing a 31 year old to a 10y deal approaching $300M (or anything in that vicinity) makes me kind of queasy. Edited by David

I wouldn't hesitate. If there's anyone that can have sustained success in old age, it's Pujols (of course, he won't be worth $30 million at age 41).

While I was reading that, I was thinking that the Cubs did indeed put themselves in an ideal position to acquire Pujols for 2012 and beyond when they inked Pena's one-year contract. But now I'm thinking that they may just be posturing in order to drive Pujols' price up for the Cards, when they really have no intention of signing such a contract. Then, before the ink is even dry on his ten-year, $270m deal, Hendry is going to leak a birth certificate proving Pujols' real age, 38.

Either scenario is fine with me. Sign him or drive the price up to punish the Cards.

By 2022 he won't be the only player making this much either, Bryce Harper will be a Yankee by then. Give him an option to opt out after 5 years or so if he wants to try to sign one last contract too.

Pujols - 10/300

(possibly slimmed down) Fielder - 5/100

Average WAR:

Pujols - 8.0

Fielder - 3.3 (4.7 avg over past 4 years)

Age:

Pujols - 31 this month

Fielder - 27 in May

Obviously Pujols is the better player, and by quite a bit, but which deal is better for the Cubs?

I'd still take Pujols. Not to mention, I don't think there's any chance Fielder settles for that. He's wanting 8/200 evidently. Salaries are heading upwards again and I can see an AL team(or us, out of desperation) getting pretty close to his salary wants.

It would be nice if the Angels and Cubs can at least drive up the price for Pujols, but he won't be going anywhere. The Cardinals might have added a few high profile contracts recently, but I'm rather convinced they didn't price themselves out of re-signing their franchise player.

There's one comment above all others in the Stark piece that rings above all others for me involving Pujols. And that's when someone said they're just trying to figure out how much money is going to be deferred. I can see them giving him all that he wants, but doing it over a 20 year period or so, instead of 10.

I wonder if the Angels will really even be in on the bidding on Pujols or Fielder. For a few reasons they already have quite a bit of money committed to next season, have options on Abreu and Kazmir $22.5m if picked up $3.5m if bought out, they already have Morales at 1B, some of their younger guys could be candidates for extensions or large bumps in arbitration.

Money committed for 2012:

Wells: $21m

Hunter: $18

Haren: $12.75

Santana: $11.2

Downs: $5

Weaver: He's getting either $7.3-8.8m in arbitration this year. So let's say he's either extended or goes through arby again and his salary for next year is $11 (which is probably a little low).

Takahashi: $4.2

Kendrick: $3.3 this year (lets call it $6 for next year)

Izturis: $3.8

Aybar: $3 this year (call it $5 next year)

Callaspo: $2 this year ($4 next year)

Morales: $2.975 this year (probably gets around $6 next year)

Total: $107.95 (rough calculations with some guessing on arbitration) Throw in another minimum of $3.5 to buy out the two options they have and some other guys that will go through arbitration/added to ML roster they are easily going into the season next year with a payroll over $110m.

I threw them out there thinking that they would be big players, but it will depend a lot on how Morales returns from a pretty serious injury. The Angels always seem to miss out on the big name free agents, and they were rather blah this past season. Just noticed that Torii Hunter is signed through '12. Between Wells and Hunter, maybe they won't be players for Pujols. Although I don't really see Pujols being available anyway.

Pujols could generate at least 4 times the revenue Fielder could. I don't know what that # is though or what kind of impact it would have.

Yeah, 8/200 is definitely possible and if that's where it goes, I'd much rather find a few extra bucks to get Pujols. The 5/100 deal would give him a huge annual salary ($20 mil a year) while also being short enough that he might get a 3-5 year deal again after it's over (he'd be 32 at that point).
