According to ESPN, Pujols will veto any trade that the Cardinals may put forth if they can't sign him by the February 19th deadline, thus ensuring that if he's not signed by the time he reports for spring training, he will be a free agent.

That is, of course, if Pujols and his agent stick to their word. 21 days to go...

That's just awesome. Pujols really is done giving Cardinals any more favors/discounts (if he sticks to his words-done talking contracts when ST starts if they don't agree on one/veto any trade)... Can you imagine what kind of package Cardinals could get by trading Pujols?? Pujols knows that and won't let that happen. It's music to my ears.

Can anyone think of a precedent in baseball for a trade like that? Granted you'd have to sign him to an extension a la Santana, but it's [expletive] Pujols. Don't say Babe to the Sox

Randy Johnson to the Astros comes to mind.

Yeah....... and they won 116 games in 2001 with those three on the team. Advantage Seattle.

P.S. Pay no mind to the stretch where Randy Johnson struck out 1,417 batters with a 2.48 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 188 ERA+, and won 88 games................. in 4 years

Here's the latest on the Pujols negotiations. Apparently he's asking for more than the Cardinals are willing to offer. A lot more.

Two weeks to go before Pujols reports to camp and his deadline passes...

Its all just posturing right now. Unless the Cardinals are complete idiots and do not understand the value of Pujols, they'll pay. They wouldnt have signed Holliday last offseason if they were just going to turn around and be unable to pay Pujols this season. I think this is all just posturing to get the just deal to appease both sides. I think at the end of everything we'll find out that there was almost no chance Albert was going to leave STL.

We can always hope though.

Holliday was a terrible deal when it was signed. But wasn't the howard monstrosity that has really made the market go all out of wack again after they signed Holliday?

At this point, it seems like the Cardinals are screwed either way. They're paying Holliday $17 million per year through 2016 (his age 36 season), so if you add another $26+ million per year for Pujols, that's half their payroll spent on two players in their 30's*. And their farm system is anywhere from mediocre to bad, so they won't have many good options to fill spots cheaply.

But if they don't sign him, he leaves and they become the Astros.

* Side note: Pujols and Holliday were (allegedly) born one day apart.

Yeah, in the end, I think this too. I can't see them not getting this done, no matter what he wants.

Pujols knows he has them over a barrel and might as well wait them out until he's sure it's their best offer. I agree that they will come to an agreement sometime.

My guess is that it gets done, but with a ton of money deferred. He probably gets 10/275, but the Cardinals only pay him 20 million a year for those ten years and then the other 75 million is paid out like five million a year with some interest or something like that.

Yep. They are going to work out some deferred after contract payments for Albert. I would honestly be shocked if they don't sign him. There is no way the finance boys didn't project Matt's contract without knowing Albert would be following in the near future.

As beautiful as it would be to see him leave St. Louis I'm just not seeing that many options for him to go to. The usual suspects all have DH/1b types locked up (Yankees, Red Sox) we are shedding payroll and the new ownership may not be enthused with us adding another gigundo contract on top of the ones we're currently suffering under, the Mets suddenly have no money, the Dodgers are going through ownership woes of their own, the White Sox/Tigers have their 1b/DH locked up, maybe the Angels when they're not giving [expletive] contracts to old/bad outfielders? (Kendry Morales is pretty good and young though) Seattle would have an opening, I have no idea how much money they can spend? San Fransisco too?

I can't think of any other team that has the money and opening to sign him.

blue jays could, but i think they will be gunning hard for prince

texas, athletics?, nationals, orioles

My main concern is being able to woo Mr. Fielder in the off-season. There are a handful of teams that are going to be able to make a run at not only him, but *possibly* Pujols.

The Mets have $46 million coming off the books after 2011, the Cubs $46 million, Dodgers $24 million, Seattle $24 million. Of course these numbers are subject to change, but more than a few teams could afford Pujols if they're willing to give him that much money.

The Mets owners also just got sued for $300 million, and Frank McCourt just lost more than that.

They'd make the room for Pujols (and it really wouldn't be hard for the Cubs to do so at all).

And really, how many huge contracts are they "suffering" under after this year? Oh, right...just one.

I believe Pujols wants to be a free agent and the 10 year-$300 million asking price is his way of getting there.

No team is going to give him that. Maybe 7 years at $210 million, but 10 years is not happening.

Jayson Werth just got a 7 year deal and he'll be 32 in May. Contracts are getting larger again and this would be for the best player on the planet, not a part time All Star type. There's not a doubt in my mind that IF Pujols wants 10/300, there'd be more than one team willing to do it. It's not going to shock me if he WANTS more than that even. Because it's very likely that he feels he was underpaid(even though he signed the contract) from his last deal and wants to make up for that.

Pujols will be 31 all season in 2011(assuming his age is correct and I have always had my doubts personally) but he also plays one of the easier positions in baseball to age gracefully into. Teams will certainly factor that in as well, along with the fact that his skillset usually ages well too. With the merchandising, extra tickets sold, bigger TV numbers possibly generated due to excitement of him being there, and the fact that he'll make your team much better, he's going to pay back quite a bit to the owners in these ways as it is. And I'm quite sure his camp knows this as well.

Yeah, any money issues teams may seem to be having will go out the window if Pujols actually becomes available as a FA. Teams like the Mets and Dodgers will be lining up front and center as if any financial troubles they had were a thing of the past. There's really no way you can count any of the major teams out if he hits the market. They'll find the money.

I wouldn't use the Nationals as an example of what 29 other teams will do.

I have no doubt about the AAV approximating $30 million. But paying Pujols $30 million when he's 42 is going to be a tough pill for any team to swallow, especially with the plantar fasciitis.

According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney, talks between the Cardinals and Albert Pujols are "not moving at all."

Olney suspects that Pujols is seeking a "Mt. Everest" contract -- something similar to the 10-year, $275 million pact that Alex Rodriguez is currently operating under with the Yankees. As baseball's best hitter, Albert has no real reason to budge from that asking price because he could probably have it met as a free agent next winter. But the Cards are obviously having trouble justifying such a lofty commitment. The club's payroll rarely tops $100 million in a given year. Pujols wants talks to cease once spring training opens.
