A source told USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale that Albert Pujols has rejected a contract proposal from the Cardinals.

It's been long reported that the Cardinals hadn't made an offer, but according to Nightengale's source they did recently and Pujols turned it down. The source goes on to say that, barring a dramatic turnaround, Pujols will announce Tuesday that no additional contract talks will take place until after the World Series. Pujols is believed to be requesting a 10-year deal.

There is no way Pujols will be a Cub.

1. The Cubs will not be the highest bidder. What has Ricketts done to make anyone think that we would possibly pay the man what he wants.

2. It would be the biggest FU to the Cards for him to come to the Cubs. I don't think he'd do it unless he had no options elsewhere.

Really? The guy has owned the team for one year and has been saddled with a freak-ton of awful contracts. What opportunity has he had to show anything?

Did we forget about the debacle that was the amateur draft? Hopefully, Ricketts keeps giving the okay to draft signable guys who are not even in the top 200 of that draft in the first round.

I've been as negative as anyone on Ricketts so far. But, he's evidently given Wilken the OK to spend "significantly more" on the draft this year, as well as more on Int FA's as well.

This seems like it's coming to fruition right now too, since we signed two Cubans for 1.7 mill and also gave Szczur 1.4 mill(plus the 100,000 he already had received obviously) to give up football.

It was also said that Wilken basically is given final say-so on how good the draft is and they spend accordingly. Which at least does make sense. I was certainly vocal in thinking that they needed to spend more money last year and stand by that. But, in the end, if Wilken spent what he wanted and got the talent he wanted in the process, then it's definitely above me to question his talent evaluations.

This upcoming draft and IFA period WILL tell us quite a bit about Ricketts true intentions though: He said that the overall baseball payroll wouldn't change from where it was last year, it'd just be reallocated towards scouting and player development. So, if we (hopefully) have an extra 3-4 mill to spend on the draft and then again on IFA, he's speaking the truth. And also will appear to the kind of owner we need as well, to build this team into a true perennial threat.

yeah, pujols needs to re-sign with the cardinals soon, because i'm starting to get excited about the possibility of pujols becoming a cub. that will only lead to disappointment.

Oh wow, really? See I'm just rooting for him to not be a Cardinal. The idea of him being a Cub seems so ridiculous that I just can't even let myself entertain the notion.

Given that he's already won a WS I'm letting myself think sky's the limit with him if he actually goes to FA so long as he gets paid what he wants.

If he stays a Cardnial I am rooting for him to get every penny he is worth, hopefully in the range of 8-10 years for $35 million per.

I'm excited no matter what, because I don't think the Cardinals are prepared well enough to put a winner around Pujols once they pay him market value, or prepared to deal with losing Pujols. Stars and scrubs doesn't work nearly as well when the biggest one takes off(or if another gets hurt, I'm looking at you Carpenter and Wainwright), especially when their system isn't good and their manager likes pissing off the guys who could become stars.

Here's a scenario to consider:(not that it'll happen, but still.....)

Pujols and Fielder both make it to FA

Sabathia opts out with Yanks and is a FA as well

Do you sign Pujols for 10/300?

or

Do you sign Fielder for 7/175 AND Sabathia for 6/110?

Pujols. I'd probably be making a terrible mistake but whatever. I'm not big on Fielder as a long term investment and I'm not a big fan of Sabathia in general. I wouldnt be thrilled paying Pujols $30 mil at age 40 but if the choice was between those 2, I'd choose the guy that's almost guaranteed to put up .950+ OPS for the next 4-5 years.

Im going to the cubs - cardinals series in st louis in september. If he's still unsigned then, ill wear a cubs pujols jersey to the games.

I kinda want to buy a Pujols Cubs jersey now.

If/when Pujols announces he's breaking off contract talks, that would be a very enjoyable thing to wear during Cubs/Cardinals games at Wrigley this year.

There's a big difference between $30M a year and $43M a year. Can I say I'd sign Pujols and a 3/$13M pitcher? I'd prefer less of the long-term risk tied up in a pitcher, myself.

Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a noon ET Wednesday deadline for contract extension talks, general manager John Mozeliak said.

Mozeliak said he has been dealing with Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano, and has not spoken personally with the slugger.

Pujols received and rejected a contract proposal from St. Louis two weeks ago and there has been no progress in the talks since then, a source told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Bob Nightengale said that when the contract was presented to Pujols, his camp immediately rejected it as it was short in years or dollars.

Yeah, I kind of thought about adding that option in too. :D

I'm kind of torn as to what way i'd go actually. I think I'd agree with you and take Pujols and whatever kind of 3/13per pitcher I could find, but it'd be tough.

I felt the same way until I heard the discussion on ESPN about this yesterday. Olney was saying how executives around the league are starting to speculate on where he'll end up and people keep saying the Cubs and Angels.

It doesn't mean anything but just hearing that made it a little more real.

Someone posted this on GRB, so figured I'd post it here to get the imagination working overtime...:)

I made a decision to never get excited until a player is at a press conference holding up my team's jersey.

It's fun to speculate though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just think Pujols has enough respect for the Cardinals organization to run to their most hated rival. Especially if the money and years are similar to what is being offerend elsewhere. If that's not the case, then all bets are off.

I truly don't think Pujols wants to leave St.Louis. But, I also think that he probably believes he's given them a huge discount over the course of this past contract and wants to be paid as if he was on the open market this time around. I certainly see his point and I honestly can't see how the Cards wouldn't see that too.

I could see him banking on the Cubs rumors' playing on the Cards' emotions and actually getting them to move much closer to whatever his magic number is.

And while this thing supposedly has a deadline of Wednesday(pushed back for something honoring Musial tomorrow) I don't think for a second that this thing won't continue to get worked on. It's too important for the Cards to just drop it when the "deadline" expires.

Jayson Stark and Colin Cowherd were both speculating that the Cubs are the most likely destination. I still don't believe it's even a possibility.

link? was it on tv or radio somewhere?

oh and BUT ESPN WANTS EVERYONE TO GO TO THE YANKEES OR RED SOX

I just can't imagine that these franchises and the people running them care nearly as much about these "rivalries" as their redneck fans do.
