If Pujols is going to get 30+ million a year give me Fielder for 18ish and that extra 10+ million to add another all star caliber player.

Lulz at Fielder getting merely Jayson Werth money. Lulz.

Last 4 years fWAR

4.1, 6.9, 2.7, 5.3 = 19.0

5.0, 4.9, 5.1, 3.2 = 18.2

Which one is Fielder and which one is Werth?

If he's talking about perception, he's right. Fielder will expect more because he's seen as a star and Werth is not.

I'm trying to imagine the reaction from both Chicago and St. Louis if the Cubs somehow managed to sign Pujols.

It would be solidly in the "shock and awe" category.

We have a winner folks. Ryan Howard's laughable deal has made Fielder all but a lock to get a deal in the 25 mill range.

Fielder's only getting that if someone like the Yanks are paying. He'll likely get $17-$20 million, but few teams are going to want or be able to shell out $25 million a year for him.

Just like Werth and Crawford were only going to get 80-90 mill. Boras isn't dumb

He can be as smart as he wants; the basic fact of the matter is that most of the teams in MLB can't afford to lock up $25 million in a single player, and they're sure as [expletive] not going to do it for a risky time bomb like Fielder. He's enormous and swings like he's trying to tear his body in half; unless it's a team that can afford both $25 million and can DH him at some point it's not going to happen. In short, the only way he's getting $25 million is if the Red Sox or the Yankees sign him. Fielder's either going to get $20 million per or a little less and more years.

If the Cubs were to make a serious push for Fielder I hope that they would give him less years and a little more money annually. I don't want him getting a contract taking him into his mid 30's. I would rather do a 4-5 year deal for about $20-25m a year than 6-8 year deal for $16-18m a year.

That's how I kinda feel on this... I would offer something like 4 yr/88 mil or 5 yr/100 mil at most, but would rather see if 18 mil/yr is enough for 4-5 yrs...

I've changed my mind. Sign Fielder, trade for Pablo Sandoval and hire Paul Prudhomme to serve as Soto's personal trainer/nutritionist. Maybe pickup Ronnie Belliard to play 2B? Fattest infield in baseball in 2012.

I can't imagine any team would prefer to sign any 20 something player to a 5yr $25m per deal over a 8yr $16m per deal.

Would you rather have Ryan Howard's or Soriano's? (given if both were the same age- they were close in age when they got their last contract I believe and you can only sign one of them) Also not knowing what their future is going to be afterwards...

That's basically 5yr/$25m vs 8yr/$17m... Ryan Howard would cost 11 mil less and 3 less years overall. Is that enough to take Howard's contract over Soriano's???

I think there's a really good chance Fielder breaks $20 mil. Somebody will find that much cash for a big name like him, I think. Much more than $20-22 mil is stretching it, though, unless the Yankees win the bidding. And it's not so much lack of desire from other teams to go on up to $25 mil, it's more lack of ability.

Boras is really good at what he does, but I don't think it's likely that even he can get Fielder up much past the $20 mil per year area.

Anyone else recall the last very productive, rather corpulant 1B who signed a huge contract?

Miggy's been great since his extension with the Tigers and will likely be great for the next few years. But, I admit he doesn't quite fit your definition since he was a 3B at the time of signing, and not as big then as he is now.

So, in short, nevermind.

Given what is being discussed, I thought this might be relevant...

Though it does make sense; someone would have realized that he's going to get more offered and more offers period if he's not out there looking like E. Honda.

but ultimately I think they'll get a deal done for him and end up losing Carpenter or Wainwright as a result.

They'll lose Carpenter after this season, but by 2014 the payroll will have escalated enough that they'll be able to keep Wainwright. The player that will be gone by then is Rasmus.

Looking at that picture Fielder might have lost weight to the equivelant of a Mike Fontenot, if that is the case and he still has his power I am all for skinny Fielder manning 1B next year.

Holy crap.

Dude went vegan. Sometimes it takes a while for the weight to come off. Eitherway hes easily the fastest fat guy in the game since tony gwynn or kirby puckett.

I believe it's vegetarian, and given the fact that he did that two years ago, I doubt it has anything to do with the dramatic difference in his weight from the end of this season until now.
