This is gonna get fun. Mostly because every entrant makes it less likely he returns to STL.

and AL would be even better

Jed Hoyer confirms Cubs are in on both:

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said the team's policy is not to confirm or deny rumors but added it would be a mistake for them to concentrate on the two premier free-agent first basemen at the winter meetings.

"They're the two players we're involved in, but to wait around for things to happen, you can miss out," he said. "So we're working on a lot of fronts."

It's awesome we have a growing front office, full of extremely competent, very smart guys. It's times like these you've got a multitude of meetings going on at the same time probably. Can you imagine Hendry in this situation? He had Bush and who knows if he even had anyone else with him? They didn't have much choice but to concentrate on one thing at a time most likely.

Don't they already have a 1b in Morales/Trumbo?

I think Trunbo could be moved to 3B and Morales could just be moved (or DH).

Room would be made.

Seriously, can Morales still play? If so and we miss out here, he's a guy I'd like. He's not even sure he'll play again though, right?

Cubs are moving to the AL?

Just saw Cubs news on CSN Chicago. Can someone please tell Pat Boyle that the Cubs lost about $45 million in contracts after the 2011 season. He said the Cubs can't afford Pujols and then asked the creepy Patrick Mooney about Fielder. Mooney of course starts out with babble about how the Cubs are not in a position to win in 2012 so Fielder makes no sense. Then he goes on to say LaHair will be one of the players the Cubs think can provide production at 1B.

My God, how do these guys get and keep jobs in the media?

Yeah, Cubs probably can't win in 2012 so may as well not make any moves to help them win beyond that. Makes perfect sense. Lets just go with a core of LaHair, Barney, Colvin, and DeWitt for the next 5 years. Worthwhile free agents? Non for us thank you. So how again are The Mariners who are being taken seriously as suiters for Fielder in any better position to win in 2012?

The best part of that "plan" is that it usually involves burning pre-arb years on a bunch of useful prospects in a wasted season.

I can do ya one better. There was an article on fangraphs a month or so back that had a nice little graph. I'll just copy and paste the relevant stuff.

In order to attempt to predict what Fielder will do over the life of his next contract, we should compare him to players with similar body types. Jeff Zimmerman has put together a list of 205 players who weigh more than 3.25 lbs per inch of height in order to construct an aging curve. To put that in perspective, a 6’0″ tall player would have to weigh a minimum of 234 lbs in order to be included in the sample.

Below is a graph that shows the aging curve of the heavy players we identified, and the curve for average sized players. Across the x-axis is age, and the y-axis runs (batting, positional, UZR), with 0 being the peak year. The y-axis shows how many runs below the peak year they are at a given age.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Curve2.jpg

Two things immediately jump out from this graph:

1) Heavy players peak a few years earlier than average players

2) Heavy players fall off the map once they are on the wrong side of 30

The rest of the article actually talks about Prince specifically and how much value the author expects him to have over his upcoming contract. It's definitely worth a read.

At any rate... the premise that bad-bodied, one-dimensional sluggers age poorly has long been a sabermetric tenet and it would seem that premise still holds up. Is it a certainty? No. Nothing is. But if we're gonna bet against the odds, I'd much rather do it for 5 years than 7.

:good:

The number of allegedly saber-savvy NSBBers that have lost all objectivity over Fielder and Pujols is pretty crazy.

Rob,

I want you to give me a list that represents any sort of decent sample size to say guys shaped like Fielder are likely to collapse before age 33.

Look through B-R's list of comps for Fielder to find quite a few. Then take a look at the front-page article on Fielder to see how their WARs have trended.

nickcafardo: Cubs definitely not in on pujols

This is becoming a real [expletive] storm of conflicting reports and conjecture.

Just like every winter meetings. And every draft week. And every trade deadline.

He probably thinks we should sign him and give him to the Red Sox for free as Theo compensation. Seriously, how does a Red Sox beat reporter get this info? My guess is there isn't a single reporter anywhere who truly has a clue as to what's going on tonight.

It will be extremely disappointing if nothing gets done during the winter meetings.

Did I mention how frustrating that my favorite Bruce is behind the paywall and I can't read any of his stories anymore?

Anyone in the building with a Twitter account suddenly has inside info.

A Red Sox reporter would presumably have a good relationship with Epstein. Though sully's true user name is a more likely source for all of these rumors.
