The Marlins are getting ripped pretty good on here, but if this spending spree results in a third ring in their short history, it would make it pretty hard to deny their method.

 

I'd suffer through three or four bad years if it meant a championship or two.

 

If a chronic gambler triples his paycheck at the craps table a few times in a row, it doesn't mean it was a good bet.

 

We haven't won a WS in 103 years. If you tell me we will win it all next season and then finish DEAD LAST for the next 5 years (or even 10), I'll take it.

I agree with that. I will let the winter meetings play out and see who signs where. If Pujols and Prince are still on the board, I will feel better. I actually want Fielder more than Pujols.

 

Well that's not very smart.

 

Fielder in his best years is about as good as Pujols in a down year. In all likelihood Fielder's decline will be early, abrupt and severe... whereas Pujols has secondary skills that suggest he'll age more gracefully.

 

Unless Fielder comes well north of 100 million dollars cheaper, there's no reason to prefer him.

I read this as more probably in regards to the SEC probe

They're probably trying to structure the contract so Pujols will get paid for most of the rest of his life. It's the ONLY way they can afford it. It's probably something to do with interest on the deferred amount.

Probably either the Marlins want to give Pujols ownership in the team/defer money for after the life of the contact (like giving him a 10 year deal but paying out some money for the next 20 or something) or they are talking to him about the SEC investigation stuff.

With Boras, nothing surprises me. He could sign the next day or this thing could last into January. My guess is if Pujols' resolves by tomorrow, Fielder takes until the week before Christmas.

I'm thinking that as soon as Pujols is inked Prince talk will heat up. Boras is likely hoping that Pujols ends up back with the Cards so he can use the Marlins as another suiter and try to bump those with 5-6 year offers to 7-8 years.

Very unlikely. They'll just put Berkman at 1st and Craig in RF full time and then hope that Matt Adams is for real for 2013.
