Maybe enough to hang around but not enough to contend.

Immediately? Sure.

But give Epstein a couple offseasons to keep finding well-valued talent, and I don't see any reason why he couldn't put together a team that wins 90 games in the NL Central.

I'm not saying it's the only way, or even the ideal way. There's just a lot of moving parts to trying to sign a major free agent, and I don't for a second believe that passing on a few of them means we are dooooooooomed.

I'm not saying we're doomed, but if the team were run like the Oakland A's, that would be a far less than ideal scenario.

Can someone explain the appeal of Morrison? I understand that he's young and cheap, but can't we do better than an 800 OPS from a corner OF spot? What's his ceiling?

Do you know many 24 year olds with a 120 OPS+ in 800+ PA's?

I can read a B-R page -- this was asked in the context of LoMo being the centerpiece of a potential Garza deal. Unless he's going to get better, I'd rather pay for a better OF and stick with my 28 year old 3-WAR SP... or take my chances with Gordon.

He's going to get better. A lot better.

@cst_cubs: Sveum on Prince: we're not even in any kind of process... Haven't talked to him.

Good lord. Come on Dale, you're laying it on pretty thick.

Prince field of suitors may start to be winnowed down soon. Too early to say who leads. #cubs, many others in.

Where's it hiding?

No, there isn't more talent here than I think. There is a whole bunch of mediocrity.

In Starlin Castro's spray chart and half the pitching staff's FIP.

Castro and half of a decent-but-not-spectacular rotation is still a crappy team.

Again, they are going to suck for a while before any sort of 90-win potential becomes real with that plan.

You are still *really* sore about Ramirez, aren't you?

I'm perfectly fine with it. But I'm not fine with purposefully tanking 2012.

Screw the Marlins, seriously.

Why? Him going there would be a very good thing, second only to him coming here...but him coming here for what he would be going to there for isn't all that great, so I'm ok with scratching off option 1.

I'm just going to shift into "if it's good news for the Cubs, I believe it, if it's not, I don't, regardless of who's reporting it" mode until this all ends.

Someone a page or two back already posted a pretty reasonable 2012 roster that didn't include any of the major free agents.

There's a dozen little places for the Cubs to get better in 2012. The rotation gets healthier, we stop hitting Baker against the wrong-armed pitchers, we make Tyler Colvin go away. Quit making Carlos Zambrano go away.

It's not tanking to pass on overpriced, big-name free agents. If they are overpriced. I'm still hopeful on Fielder.

The fact that they pull all kinds of money out of their ass and all of a sudden are favorites for every top FA doesn't bother you at all? Plus, I'm still not over 2003.

Eh. It's not the Yankees or Red Sox out there buying up all the FA's. So I'm kinda ok with it.

Out of their ass? They just got a stadium built for free and suddenly have a bunch of luxury box revenue that they never had. Anybody who was paying attention knew a spending spree was coming. Not to mention a bunch of money off the books.

And no, as a Cubs fan, I'm not jealous of the Marlins resources, so that doesn't bother me.

It'd be kind of funny if spending a bunch of time pining after free agents only to see them go to Miami became a thing. Who do the Bears want next year that the Dolphins can take away?

Holy [expletive].... if the Marlins added Reyes, Pujols, Bell, and Wilson in one offseason. They'd be looking at a very good team for a couple years and some terrible contracts in a couple years.

Let me get this straight - No Pujols, or Fielder with main RBI guy Ramirez gone. Hope they got some trades brewing otherwise hitting is going to be as awful as San Diegos.
