Marlins offer for Pujols believed to be for 9 years...

The contract the Marlins offered to Albert Pujols "is believed to be for nine years," says Yahoo's Tim Brown. The Marlins pulled out all the stops in an attempt to woo Pujols, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, who hears that part of the team's pitch to Pujols involved bringing in about ten players to assist in recruiting and "make the organization's interest clear." Here are the rest of the latest rumblings on the free agent who ranks atop MLBTR's Top 50....

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak expects to meet with Dan Lozano, Pujols' agent, this week, according to Crasnick. It will be the first time this offseason that the two have talked in person.

Past reports have indicated St. Louis made Pujols an offer of nine years and $210MM before the season, but Crasnick hears that the Cardinals never topped $200MM.

While Pujols was "surprised" that the Cardinals named Mike Matheny their new manager, the hiring isn't expected to play a major role one way or the other in Pujols' decision.

Mozeliak said Tuesday afternoon that he "wouldn't envision" pursuing Prince Fielder even if Pujols signed elsewhere.

If 9-year deal rumor is true, the #Marlins would be committing more dollars to Pujols than they contributed to build the new ballpark.

it's funny and kind of dirty to me that the marlins are making a point to specifically target latin players this offseason. i was watching mlb network and they were talking about it. i mean it makes sense because it's miami, but isn't that... like... racist?

Maybe, maybe not. Pujols and Reyes are two of the top 3-4 FA this offseason. And even if it is just because they're Latin, it's not as bad as what Omar Minaya was doing with the Mets, imo.

So nine years is pretty much the minimum for Pujols? I wouldn't say no way, but it's getting into icky territory.

I wouldn't say it's the minimum, since the reports were that the offer wasn't close... the AAV must be pretty low (by his standards).

Very icky territory.

Probably true, but when you are talking about a contract that will take him through age 40, the total value is probably more important than AAV. He's not getting another major contract.

Kyle,

Would you prefer to give him a 7/210 contract or 9/210?

9/210, of course. But I'd rather not go to 210 at all.

But I think he'd rather have 9/230 than 7/200

I hear he has residences in Iowa and Milwaukee.

Marlins have reportedly offered Pujols 9 years & $225 million. (via @TheBigLead) With offer to Reyes, Marlins have 15 years & $315M offered.

Assuming he goes to the highest bidder, that's further than I'd go. On to Fielder.

You weren't expecting to go higher than $25M/year?

I think it's more about the AAV for him (within reason, of course... obviously 27/5 or something isn't going to trump that offer). It's an ego thing. He obviously will have more than enough money to do everything he could ever dream of even if he stays in St. Louis. He just wants to be the highest paid player in the game.

So if the contracts were even throughout the length of the deal, they will commit to $40 mil to 2 players next year, putting them around $100 mil for 11 players I think.

He might still be willing to do like 7 years/$32 mil per year ($224). I would guess that if Pujols were to accept less years, the total contract value would have to be similar to the 9 year offers he gets, because if he took a 7 year deal, he's not really likely to get much money in years 8 and 9 with a new deal at age 40.

I'd do 25 million AAV for a 7-year deal, but nine is too many.

I have no idea what Albert Pujols wants, so he states otherwise, I'll very tentatively assume he goes for the most total money.

Personally, I'm fine with giving him 210/7... so I wouldn't bat an eye at 225/9

Honestly, six or seven or eight years doesn't matter to me. You aren't signing Albert Pujols with an eye to what he can give you when he's 39. It's total value. $180 is about as far as I'd go.

That's both absurd and was never going to be in the ballpark as to total value he'd get. If you didn't think the Cubs would have to beat the Cards' lowball 200/9 offer from last year, then you were never really thinking the Cubs could reasonably get him.
