No one has apparently picked it up, and Rotoworld even posted an update about Lee with no indications of a SD deal

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, free agent Derrek Lee is telling teams that he will accept one-year bids.

Lee may have been asking for a multi-year contract before, but teams are filling up their rosters quickly and he's hoping to find a good landing spot before everything dries up. The 35-year-old batted .260/.347/.428 this past season with 19 home runs in 547 at-bats. Arizona is interested, as is Baltimore and D.C. He should be signed within the next 10 days.

I think I heard that Blanks was having some sort of procedures done this offseason that might linger into the 2011 season. Shoulder issues maybe?

ETA: He had Tommy John surgery

That dude is a fat mess... but man does he have a truckload of power

I was shocked when they stuck him in the outfield. Granted, nobody was transplanting Gonzalez off of 1st, but they are being kind with his weight on all the media outlets. Dude's pushing 300 pounds. CBS has him listed at 285, but that's not much more than Fielder, and Blanks is 6 inches taller.

Whats up with the recent trend of bad teams signing aging vets? IE Pirates/Overbay, D Backs/Mora, Padres/Lee, A's/Matsui? Maybe it could be argued that Cubs/Pena falls into this catagory.

Recent trend? This has been their strategy for many years. They can't afford the pricy free agents, so they sign the leftovers to 1 or 2 year deals and then hope that those veterans are enough of an improvement to put a few more butts in the seats and then hope they play well enough to get decent value for them at the deadline.

This was essentially the Chicago Cubs on the 70's/80's/90's, as well as the reason Pittsburgh's downfall has lasted so long. Teams are wary of selling complete youth movements so they spend some on bums. Tampa did it a lot in their early years as well.

The problem with the Pirates was they didn't have any youth to sell even if they wanted to. It's astonishing how awful their farm system was forever with so many top 10 draft picks.

Bad teams? The Padres finished 2 games behind the Giants in the NL West. And they've had an offseason that *could* end up productive enough to keep them in contention for a Wild Card in 2011. So, if you can get a guy like Lee on a one year deal, why not?

I sure hope he has another solid year or two in him, for Orioles' fans sake.

They seem happy from what I saw. I'll always like Derek, but it seemed pretty clear to me he was well on his way down.

I think this makes it pretty clear that winning is not a priority of D Lee. Along with the rejection of the trades until they basically strong armed him last year, this proves that Lee just likes being in a comfortable situation.

He was a good player for the Cubs, but good riddance.

Have fun losing 100 games, DLee, I hope you personally greet all 12,000 fans that will see you play most games.
