Nobody (except Washington State) had a bad loss out of conference, and several teams had good wins. They all beat themselves up within the conference, though.

That's true. Guess I'm just not a big believer in bottom feeders beating top end teams being a sign that a conference is really good.

i pretty much hated college football news after reading this... actually i used to read that site frequently and its become kind of a joke the last couple of years. here's one of their rationales for why auburn will beat oregon:

10. The Pac 10 sort of sucks this year

Oregon might be a national title-good team that just so happened to play a mediocre slate. However, it’s not like the Ducks played a who’s who of killers with just one win over a team currently ranked in the BCS top 25. The lone decent road victory came against a Tennessee team that’s only in a bowl because it’s lone win over a bowl team came against Kentucky at home in the regular season finale. The Ducks’ second best win was at USC, who, to be fair, would’ve gone to the Holiday Bowl if eligible. It’s not like they had to beat Alabama, Mississippi State, Clemson, South Carolina (twice), Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia. Auburn has more than proven itself against top-shelf competition. Oregon hasn’t.

the pac 10 is ranked first in the sagarin ratings. and i love that beating teams like mississippi state, clemson and georgia are now great wins.

Not to mention that while Oregon only had one win by less than 10 points, Auburn had six. So even if you consider Auburn's schedule to be slightly harder, it's not like they were matching Oregon's margin of victory.

Big Ten and SEC bowl participants and how they stack up in regards to oversigning:

Thanks for posting that.

It's hard to fault Nebraska for their tickets sold given the matchup but I figured they would still go anyways. Michigan is a little bit surprising to me.

Wait so that terrible B.O.B. song is going to be played many times in every bowl game again this year?

It seems pretty clear Coach Urban Meyer will be working on ESPN next year.

Boise and Utah were sloppy last night. Boise had at least 2 TD's that they gave away...(fumble through endzone and catch with a toe on the line).

Still though, after taking the first quarter to feel out Utah, Boise really dominated the rest of the game. Not much to watch if you weren't a fan of either team.

Has anyone else seen the pictures of Qualcomm stadium? How the hell are they going to play that game?

I just snagged a free ticket to that game with 3 friends. Should be fun. It's my first bowl game. Looked like a toilet bowl last night on the news. Did you see the parking lot? Port-a-potties laying over on their side. Rather disgusting. Clean up crews were going to be working 24 hours to try to get the field in playing condition.

Holy crap:

@kgordonosu

NCAA release: Adams, Pryor, Posey, Herron & Thomas will sit out 1st 5 games of 2011 season for selling awards, etc

osu self reported violations dec. 20 and requested reinstatement then. players must repay money for things sold.

apparently, they will play in Sugar Bowl. also jordan whiting must sit out 1st game of 2011

First 5 games next year are Akron, Toledo, @ Miami, Colorado, and Michigan State.

The last 7 days have been glorious. The Rose Bowl is similarly messed up after the Arroyo Seco flooded over its banks (16" of rain in a week will do that) but they obviously have time to fix it.

Pryor must repay $2,500 for his 2008 Big Ten title ring, 2009 Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship award, and 2008 Gold Pants (which were apparently awarded for beating Michigan).

Dan Herron has to repay $1,150 for selling his jersey, pants, and shoes for $1,000 and "receiving discounted services worth $150." I assume that's the tattoo.

It sounds like the suspension would have been 4 games if not for the fact that they didn't immediately disclose the sales.

It also appears that they'll be allowed to play in the bowl game because they weren't aware they were committing a violation. The NCAA blamed Ohio State for inadequate rules education. Ridiculous.

Wow, did not expect that.

Where would Pryor be drafted if he came out now? Late 2nd into the 3rd maybe?

I'd love to know that, as well. I'd be a bit surprised if they all returned next year.

Michigan State fans must be licking their chops right now.

Ohio State is going to appeal and the appeals process starts next week.

Still piecing things together, but I believe the tattoo shop was under investigation for something unrelated when they found the items signed by Ohio State players. According to Adam Rittenberg, the US Attorney contacted Ohio State on December 7th after they seized the items and the athletic department was informed the next day.

Gene Smith: "These young men went into these decisions with the right intent, to help their families." Yeah, that's [expletive].

RT @LenPinthGarnell: @slmandel No wonder Pryor was especially miffed he didn't win All-Big Ten awards. Cut into his Xmas budget.

Why is that an expletive? It's not like they went out and stole stuff or were dealing drugs. They sold their own possessions. That could very easily be because they and their families had no money. It's a blatantly obvious violation but not some horrible action.

The default position of college sports fans is that every violation of an NCAA rule is an egregious act of moral depravity (as long as they don't play for your favorite team) while simultaneously whining about how horrible and stupid the NCAA is.

It's always the "right intent" according to the violators and the schools and that they were just unaware of the rules. Every single student athlete knows the rules. I have no idea how Ohio State as able to convince the NCAA otherwise. The bottom line is they did something damaging to their program, their own careers, and professional prospects for some cash. They didn't even do it in a wise manner. And on top of all of that, they continued to break the rules for some stupid discounted tattoos.

Well, the NCAA horrible and stupid, but I certainly don't blame these guys for taking advantage of the souvenirs and selling them. I do find it interesting that they aren't being suspended for the bowl game though. God forbid the NCAA get lower ratings because a game won't b as interesting.

On a selfish note, I'm okay with it since I'm going to the Sugar Bowl and want to see a good game.

They sold their own property.

They sold their own property.

And that necessarily means there was a righteous intent behind it?
