1 yr/10 million according to Muskat's Twitter.

If it actually is only for 1 year then this is a good deal for Hendry. Pena had 3 very solid years before last and moving from the AL East to the NL Central should help quite a bit. It's also nice to add a guy who walks almost 100 times a year to the lineup. Could very easily see him rebounding to the tune of a .900 OPS next year, though I'd expect something closer to .850. Still, we could've done a lot worse.

Thank god if true. I like the 2/$14 rumor better than the 1/$10 but I'm sure there's some sort of option and at least Hendry can't backload the crap out of a contract for once. I prefer Pena under this contract over the one Dunn signed.

Let's trade for Davis and Day, let cashner start in the minors and sign Brandon Webb to a team friendly deal and call it an offseason.

Hopefully Cashner will start in the majors – Demp/Z/Wells/Webb/Cashner, am I forgetting anybody?

As for the Pena signing, it's a good move. It's better than paying Dunn $56 million over 4 years as long as last year was an aberration. Like you said, let's get the Davis/O'Day for Chirinos/Dolis trade done and hopefully have our first baseman of the present and of the future.

A .900 OPS is unlikely since he's never done it before, but a return to his 2009 form of an .893 OPS is very possible, as is 2008's .871. Either way, so long as that BABIP rebounds, he's almost a shoe-in to be a 3+ WAR player.

yeah, pena was clearly the best option here, though 10 mill sounds like more than i had thought they would spend all off-season, so i'm sure we'll see some correspondingly poor payroll shedding type moves coming up

2011 cubs are gonna be a whole lot of bad

Wow, how'd I miss a 1.037 OPS? Probably because I was looking for .900 OPS' and looked right over a higher one. Or I'm just an idiot.

The point still stands, though, that a .900 OPS isn't likely, but him being a very valuable player is likely.

I thought about him, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's not in the rotation. Either a salary dump trade later in the offseason to a team that didn't fill it's SP need or a long relief spot in the pen seems like a possibility, at least (and I hope).

Had a feeling he would sign with us since the summer. Oh well, thank christ it is only for one year. Now please pull of the trade with Texas, sign Webb, and lets get ready for some baseball!

Yeah I'd like to see him dumped. Preferably eat some money and get a prospect in return. A rotation of Z/Webb/Dempster/Wells/Cashner would at least be mildly exciting to me

i like 1/10 a lot a lot better than 2/14.

i am pretty okay with this signing.

I don't get this unless you want to have an opening to offer Pujols half the ticket sales in '11.

I'm pleasantly surprised... They probably purposely leaked the laroche rumors so we'd all be happy with this.

Anyway, were teams shifting on Pena any more this year than they had in the past? That might be an (bad for us) explanation for the BABIP drop. If not, it's reason to be optimistic. Just don't know where I could get that data, if anywhere.

How much payroll do we have locked up for 2011?

I wouldn't think so...don't we have a decent amount of salary coming off the books? Not sure how much of it gets eaten up by escalating contracts.

Not thrilled by Pena at first but he should be an offensive upgrade over last season at less money than we paid Lee last year, so fair enough.

Rosenthal's take on the deal includes this encouraging note:

"The Cubs are strongly considering using right-hander Andrew Cashner as a starter next season."

He also mentions that the Cubs are pursuing a number of trade options in addition to the Texas rumors.

Just curious but what would be your first option? I personally prefer this over the money/years Dunn got and over the prospects given up/money/years Gonzalez got.

WHY DOES THIS EVEN NEED TO BE CONSIDERED?!

sadly i was just happy to see they're still considering it. i figured they would just dump him in the bullpen from now on.
