18 career passing yards.

also known as the 2nd most passing yards on the Bears roster.

That, unfortunately, is not a selling point.

Hey, I tried to look for the silver lining. I actually checked RBs and Hester's throwing stats too (Chester Taylor threw a 4-yard completion once).

Brad Maynard has 94 career passing yards with an impressive 2 TD to 0 INT ratio.

Hanie's better than Gutierrez, that's for sure.

But isn't that like saying Ryan Theriot is better than Neifi Perez? Hanie looked completely lost in the few regular season snaps he had last year. He's been okay in preseason, but that's preseason. Bottom line is if Cutler goes down, it doesn't really matter who is taking snaps behind center.

Ah yes, Maynard has the 2nd most passing yards on the Bears. *sigh*

No, but they'd be in better shape if they went after Jeff Garcia or Luke McCown than a guy who is worse and has less experience than their injured backup.

Instead of 2-14 they'd have a shot @ 4-12.

If Jay goes down it's over

The Bears have a future Tom Brady or Kurt Warner waiting in the wings. You just watch!

Well no [expletive] the season is done. If any starting QB goes down that team's season is done, I'm not arguing that. However you'd think the Bears, who have an unproven, inexperienced backup QB, would be intelligent enough to go after a backup QB with a little experience instead of one who a less talented, even more unproven/inexperienced.

This guy they brought in sucks. They aren't going catch a diamond in the rough here. This guy played at Idaho [expletive] State. It just doesn't make sense to bring in someone who is obviously worse than your backup.

People say this all the time and it drives me nuts. Yeah if he's lost for the year that's the case. But don't you want someone who can potentially keep you afloat if he's hurt for 2-3 games? Or just to fill in for 2 quarters if he gets knocked out in a game?

It actually makes perfect sense. It's Lovie's final season and he's in a slow cooker. The team is operating on a limited budget and will only offer a minimum contract.

It sucks for me though, because I'm going to shell out $300 bucks to DirectTV just to watch the Bears go down in flames.

Perhaps, but this team can't afford to have Cutler miss any games if they want to make the playoffs. And if they don't make the playoffs, they might as well go 2-14.

Bears have already said Hanie should be ready to go by Week 1 though, so all of this is probably not even worth discussing. I have a feeling they're just bringing someone in to get a few preseason snaps so LeFevour isn't stuck playing 3 quarters.

Garcia isn't coming here to be a third string QB and insurance policy. McNown isn't any good and is probably not going to keep you "afloat" for 2-3 games.

Pretty much anyone out there right now with any experience is either bad or would only come back for a real shot at playing, not to carry a clipboard and possibly not even be active on game day when Hanie gets healthy.

Who cares. Its not like Henie was going to do anything with this team by himself anyway. The Bears arent the Jets where you have a great D and solid line and you can just plug in a veteran Qb to make the playoffs. Id rather them throw Lefevour in the fire and see what happens. Pocket Teabow can at least move around, Martz loved this guy. its a lot more interesting than some replacement vet. Believe it or not this line is going to be better than last year for Cutler. Ok thats not saying much and it wont be dramatic but the tackle play will be improved.

How many years can you say Tommie Harris is the wildcard for this defense? I swear this is my last, especially with Peppers on the line. I am also less of a believer in the Tampa 2/Cover 2. Hell i was a big believer with the Bucs and early Bears but i think the league and style of play has caught up with it. This seams like a dying bread and not all the important pieces seem to be in place. SS a big void.

I think the 1972 Dolphins would argue that, though. Starting QB Bob Griese misses most of the season with an injury, but the Dolphins still go 14-0 and win the Super Bowl.

More often than not you're right, though.

It's modern era football though. STL did it with Warner, but that was a preseason injury and resulted in a HOF caliber QB replacing a journeyman. Same thing with New England. You could get away with it if you are a dominant defensive team that hides the QB anyway, but if you rely on your QB for anything your backup isn't going to help. A journeyman QB might help an already decent team hold onto a playoff spot, but that's about it.

The best argument I've heard about this is, if they were really concerned about the backup QB situation, the time to worry about it was a few months ago, not 3 weeks into training camp. They tied their horse to the Hanie/LeFevor bandwagon, which doesn't really make me angry as a fan because I know the Bears are done without Cutler in any event.

But for those scraps that might be laying out there? Even those guys have had to make other life plans. In at least one case, those plans now prevent the guy from signing here.

Sad news, Former Bear Johnny Bailey passed away from pancreatic cancer this morning at age 43. I was at the game when he was at Texas A&I and broke the career NCAA all purpose yardage record from Tony Dorsett I believe.

I was a big Johnny Bailey fan. 22 is my favorite jersey number. And he was great in the open field. It seems like he was a Bear longer than 2 years though.

Yeah it really does, and longer in the NFL than 6 years.

Why I don't get about the Bears is their arrogance, they're above reproach, how dare anyone question them? Besides sucking the last few seasons what have they done to warrant such arrogance? I know it was only the first preseason game but, we saw some of the same old crap - dumb penalties, can't stop anyone on second and long, no running game, missed tackles - I believe the media had every right to question Lovie. Yet he gives off this how dare you question us and anything we do attitude.

I think that this is Lovie's response to the administration's demand that they make the playoffs this year or he is gone. The pressure is ratcheting up, and Lovie's response is to try to remind everyone that he is in control. Or so he thinks. I put very little stock into preseason games apart from #3. In part I understand where Lovie is coming from because the Chicago media dissects every little play in the preseason. Lovie thinks his team has improved, and we will find that out for sure starting with game one in Detroit.

Yeah, it definitely seems that way. I think this whole regime is too hell bent on bringing up the past. Lovie's stuck in 2006. Martz is stuck in St. Louis having one of the best offenses ever, and he has never repeated the success of the 2 Superbowl seasons. The team in general is stuck on what Marinelli did w/ the Tampa line (full of 1st rounders by the way). The team is stuck on what Tice did w/ the OL in Minnesota years ago.

I get the sense from this coaching staff that their attitude is "hey, we did it in 2006!" and we have a lot of the same players and have upgraded at QB, DE, etc. Not saying it's the wrong attitude, or that it can't work again, but it just seems like the team philosophy is pretty stale all the way around.

How many plays did Urlacher get in before leaving injured? 3? He's done for the night with some kind of calf injury.
