I think this relates to this conversation. I think the Ricketts are going to keep Hendry, and I like it. I don't approve of the way this team has been handled by Hendry over the last 6 years or so, but I think a lot of that had to do with pressure from the Tribune company to win now. Hendry has done pretty well for himself in other areas as GM. It seems the mistakes have nearly always been in a push for "the final piece." The Ricketts are intelligent people, and I think their plans include a rebuilding mode for the next couple of years while still being moderately competitive in a not-so-good division. I hope they do not think they have to go out and get their manager of the future this offseason though. To me, they still have a couple of years to decide on the right one, rather than the available one.

I didn't say they shouldn't plan on hiring the right manager this offseason, but if they're not happy with their options why should they commit to one of those guys for many years, especially when the team likely won't be real contenders next season? Obviously, best case scenario they get their man this offseason and that guy is a good manager. I just don't want them to settle for somebody and be stuck with him for a long stretch. Now, trying to find a manager that signs only a one or two year deal on a team that appears to not be serious contenders would not be an easy task.

I haven't seen any interest actually expressed by Joe Torre and that article doesn't show any either, so I didn't count him.

If Sandberg, Girardi, or Brenly becomes Cubs manager I could definitely see Maddux signing on as a coach, probably pitching coach.

I don't see that. I believe Larry stays as pitching coach regardless of who the manager is.

If Hendry leaves I think Maddux would be a good GM. Although I know a lot of people would be leery of putting him there without any prior front office experience. Someday, though, I think he'll be a great executive.

Is it too late for Ricketts to renege on his statement about Hendry after the season is over? I realize that the games don't mean anything now, but even independent of payroll this team is an complete embarassment. Bringing payroll into the equation, they are a disaster of epic proportions. It makes no sense whatsoever to allow the GM of a train wreck to hire the team's next manager.

Ricketts said that Hendry would be the GM "going into next year." I think you were reading my statement too literally. Of course we know that Ricketts has the power to make a change at any time, but would he even consider such a thing after verbally committing to Hendry for next season? That is a little different than the standard vote of confidence.

Firing Hendry after saying that would be a bad PR move, but a collapse in the second half would remedy that. If the Cubs are awful in the second half, Ricketts could easily say that recent occurences changed the situation and he is acting accordingly.

 

At that point, it's not reneging on his word (even if it was just lip service), it's being pro-active in a changing situation. Purely PR, but you'd like to avoid PR hits if you can.

Right. The statements in regards to Hendry in no way lock the Ricketts in to keeping him.
