Piniella: I'm retiring at the end of the season

And? I still don't understand why you think that it is somehow binding in the sense that the Ricketts can't or won't decide to fire him instead.

I agree with you. The idea that a vote of confidence is even needed, means that the team has underperformed. If the team continues to underperform or gets worse, then change will be made. This gm, he is a changin.

Once again, I understand that it is not binding, but I would say that it is uncommon for an owner to commit to someone beyond the current season and then go another direction. I'm not saying that it can't happen, but the comments that I've read and the opinions of beat reporters and other media members close to the team all indicate that Hendry will be back in 2011. I hope I'm wrong, but all signs still point to a Hendry return.

I don't know what a GM committing to somebody has to do with this, but it's not at all uncommon for owners to pay lip service to the future employment of a front office member and then actually making a change when that season ends.

Oops, I meant to say an owner committing. I can see where that would have been confusing!

Given all the family issues Lou is obviously having, at this point I would just resign. Why is he even putting himself through this? He's not around much of the time anyway, and obviously his family could use his presence on the homefront.

The Cubs don't need him because the season is lost. Lou doesn't need this; he's needed at home more.

Just resign.

They could offer him payed leave for the remainder of the season. I think Lou is too proud though.

Literally quitting during your final season would probably not sit well with Lou's ego. I can't see it happening.

On the other fan, he's 100% OK with being a terrible manager and appearing old and senile through his decision making.

Where is the first fan?

Ha, brutal typo. Clearly meant the other hand.
