Piniella: I'm retiring at the end of the season

Tom Ricketts said Tuesday that Hendry "will be our GM next year. He will lead the effort to find a manager. It will be Jim's decision, but we will work together."

Click for depression

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

He dropped the ball!

I listened to the whole press conference and as I heard and saw the quote, I heard many things that made me think Ricketts is not going keep Hendry, it makes perfect sense for him to be in full support of Hendry right now with the trade deadline approaching. I also believe the quote was more in the direction of "Hendry will be our GM going into the offseason and will work with hiring the new manager."

That quote says specifically that "Hendry will be our GM NEXT year."

It's got to really piss off you that Hendry gets to keep his job in this economy.

No the specific quote was "Jim Hendry will be our GM going INTO next year". He also said Jim hendry is our GM "Full Stop". Which means he is the GM period. That does not mean next week, next month, or next year.... It means current. I am not saying Rickett's is saying Hendry is gone for sure, I am just saying Ricketts is simply taking the business approach and nobody but Tom knows if Hendry is staying yet.

I can kind of understand Ricketts being supportive of Jim Hendry if he has no intention of firing Hendry now. If you come out and say you'll fire him in the offseason, why not fire him now and get it over with?

That said, I'm going to be ticked off if Jim Hendry is still GM come next season.

You cannot go into into the deadline looking to shed payroll without a general manager can you?

Remember, Hendry's duties have been scaled back a bit following his health scare awhile back and Randy Bush has been working as Assistant General Manager since 2006. I'd imagine that Bush could come into Hendry's role and at least have an idea of where the organization stands, what teams are interested in the Cubs' players, and which prospects/young players the Cubs want to target. I don't know if he'd do as well as Hendry, but he probably could do a respectable job.

I wouldn't recommend it this close to the deadline, but it could be done.

[expletive] you Ricketts! How the hell does Hendry continue to keep his [expletive] job! Unreal

I read that Hendry's job status is complicated because Ricketts likes Oneri Fleita and Tim Wilken; and the speculation is it's almost a certainty that they would both resign, out of loyalty, if Hendry is let go.

Then Ricketts either

A) makes them an offer they cannot refuse

or

B) Waves good bye. Frankly, I'm underwhelmed with both of them.

Bruce Miles says Hendry will be here next year:

We can parse words all we want, but Jim Hendry will be the GM next year. There is no more important relationship than manager-GM. The Cubs are not going to tell Hendry to lead the search for a manager and then fire him. I asked directly if Jim would be the GM next year. The reply:

“Jim is our general manager full stop. He will be leading the effort to find our new manager and will be our general manager going into next year, yes.”

Ricketts in no way is going to say, "Thanks, Jim, now goodbye."

Ive heard from some people in the Chicago area that Ricketts and Joe Torre are very close friends, and Torre is who Ricketts really wants. I dont know how true it is, but thought Id throw that out there.

Torre actually reminds me a lot of Lou – veteran manager with a very good track record who emphasizes patience/OBP in offensive approach but likes to be a bit too active on the basepaths.

So what manager in their right mind wants to come here knowing the GM has to be on a pretty short leash? It makes no sense to let Hendry come back. Not many managers are going to want to come into that kind of situation with the GM.

What makes you think Hendry's on a short leash?

Exactly, if the team's performance this year doesn't get Hendry fired, it is hard to imagine what it would take.

Well I dont know for sure hes on a short leash, but you would have to assume he is. If he makes changes to this team, and they start out horribly next season, I would expect there to be a lot of questions concerning Hendrys job. I can't see a manager wanting to come into that type of situation. But hell for all I know, Ricketts will offer Hendry a 10 year [expletive] contract extension at seasons end.

Tom Ricketts, you can kiss my white ass. The fact that you keep Jim Hendry around and think he's worthy of making personnel decisions for your team shows that you know absolutely nothing about running it. I know of a few posters on this website that would be better GM's than Jim Hendry, and I'm sure any of them would take the job.

Seriously, just sell the team and get the hell out of baseball. You have no clue.

I agree with the first part. I think the logic is just the opposite of the second part however... If Ricketts is planning to remove Hendry he wants to keep that close to the vest. Not many quality managers would want to come into a situation where the GM is unsettled. It makes sense to present continuity even when change is in the plans.

Call me crazy but I don't like the idea of Joe Torre. I think this team needs a manager who can, conceivably, be around for the longterm not another stop-gap guy who will be looking at retirement in a few years. I believe Torre is older than Lou.

Im basing the second part on all the reports saying Hendry is coming back next season. It seems pretty much a done deal that Hendrys back and thats the presumption Im working under. So again what manager wants to come into that situation?

Oh ya Im not saying I want Torre at all, but thats just some rumors Ive heard. I think Bobby V is my top choice.
