You think Heyward has it locked up? Strasburg and Garcia have to be in consideration.

Heyward or Strasburg are just too far ahead for Castro to have a chance unless he goes on a REALLY insane tear the rest of the year.

I'm sure Castro's numbers aren't inspiring enough to voters. I'd say at this point in time Jaime Garcia is the best overall rookie, but if I were to put money on who would win in the end, I'd probably go with Buster Posey. Strasburg is gonna get shut down too early to warrant consideration over other deserving candidates, Heyward hasn't done much of anything since May, and his injury isn't going to help things. Posey has been awesome

aside from jaime garcia, the rookies who have played well have been mostly blue chip prospects this year. none of this chris coughlin, j.a. happ [expletive].

as for castro, he makes too many errors still, but that's to be expected from a guy who's 20 years old. there's certainly a lot to be excited about with him... the rest of the team, not so much.

Turned on Cashner and Soto already? Cold.

Heyward isn't that far ahead of Castro if at all.

Of course he is. Remember, the decisions for these things typically comes to down to being little more than a popularity contest. It's ultimately less an issue of whether Castro had a better year than Heyward as to whether or not Castro's year was a bigger story and Castro is a bigger name than Heyward when it comes time to vote.

Jason Heyward is going to the same swoon as Colvin at this point. I know Heywards younger, and has a higher ceiling, but at this point

Heyward: .257/.370/.456 11 HR

Colvin .262/.314/.514 13 HR

Besides, if it really does come down to nothing more than a popularity contest and the biggest story/hype, may as well have handed the award to Strasburg the moment he made his first big league pitch.

That's not the same "swoon" at all. Colvin's numbers for the year are bolstered way too much by something that's all but unsustainable for him whereas Heyward is demonstrating the type of tendencies that are very promising in a young hitter like him and bode well for his future.

Which numbers aren't similar?

A .113 IsoD is nice.

heyward has hit .207/.307/.279/.586 since june 1st, that's pretty damn bad.

that being said, it seems a lot of his downfall has been because of a thumb injury, which can really sap hitters of their power.

Right, which is why, again, this has very similarity to Colvin's "swoon." This is a rookie playing injured.

While the OBP isnt similar and leans toward Heyward, there is an almost exact difference in slugging leaning toward Colvin. They really have put up pretty similar numbers this year. Dont get me wrong Im not a Colvin guy, and I dont want him penciled in next year as a starter, but their seasons are remarkably similar.

And you can't underscore the thumb injury sapping his power.

Cashner, Soto, Gorzelanny, Marshall, Marmol and to a lesser extent Colvin and Wells? You're so emo.

Should probably take into account the context of Starlin's walks which likely inflates that IsoD and OBP....

17 of his 20 walks have come in the 8th spot while a bit under half of his PA's have come in that spot. How many times have we seen Starlin either be intentionally walked or blatantly pitched around?

I know, I know. Sample size... but for that same reason, I don't think his rate stats are really representative of his plate discipline at the major league level at this point.

The 8 spot does have something to do with his walk totals, but not as much as saying 17/20 in under half his PA's does. Looking at it by outs:

0 out: 79 PA's, 5 BB

1 out: 92 PA's, 4 BB

2 out: 81 PA's, 11 BB

Even in the 8 spot he isn't going to see too many unintentional intentional walks with <2 outs, so you can probably conclude that 5-6 of those are directly related to his batting order spot. Of course, just removing those doesn't give an accurate picture either, because he gets a hit 3/10 times, and it's obviously very encouraging to see that he's willing to take those walks that other swingers like Castro would've turned into K's.

OBP is way more valuable than SLG

Can someone reference something that I can read as to why this is. I've seen the argument made lots of times - but never read anything indepth.

It comes down to outs being the most important thing, most specifically not making them.

Without going into the actual studies behind it, you can only add to your OBP by getting on base (not making an out) You can add to your SLG by getting an extra base. So 1-4 with a double makes your SLG equal to an OBP with 2-4 for 2 singles. The one base isn't worth the one out.
