Having never seen Wallach pitch, the reports actually seem pretty promising. Difficult to believe anyone here can be that down on the dude considering he was a third round pick just last season and has performed well early on. With that knowledge, how can you be that down on a pitcher you've likely never seen play?

Found this on Baseball America:

Brett Wallach, OCC: “He did himself a lot of favors—89-91 fastball, good curveball, nice frame. Could go three-to-four rounds.”

Wallach has some potential. DeWitt is a serviceable 2B. Not an inspiring return but not awful either for a rental.

Exactly. Wallach will be a major league pitcher at some point. I'll take that upside for 2 months of Lilly and a couple mil. The reliever and Dewitt for Theriot makes it a solid deal and about the best we could have hoped for.

And we gave them 2.5 million with Theriot/Lilly.

Or you could say the Cubs saved 2 million

Little more than that...Theriot makes more than DeWitt.

I was hoping for a bit more. DeWitt is Fontenot, Wallach is an Archer type, and Smit doesn't do much for me.

Epic fail!

A 22 year old in Low A ball that isn't dominating and a 23 year old reliever.

If that is the expectation of what you would get out of a 1st round pick and a sandwich pick plus $2.5 million, then you need to change your scouting.

You are assuming they were going to take the chance and offer him arbitration when there was talk he might accept it.

I do not think that means what you think it means.

Liking what I'm hearing about Wallach so far. Smit seems to be getting his walks under control and has a 4.6 k/bb ratio so far this year in AA. Maybe we could flip Dewitt for Johnson and that's really not a terrible return.

A cautiously optimistic "Good job" to Jimbo.

Don't think DeWitt has a little more projectability?

OR....

A recent 3rd round projectable RHP in his 1st year of professional baseball putting up nearly 10Ks per 9.

I'm a tad disappointed, but it's fair. I was hoping for one of their top 10 guys somehow. Oh well. Wallach definitely moves into our top 20, maybe higher.......Not a horrible return. Now, lets see Ricketts take his "savings" and spend it on international signings immediately. Then I'd like this quite a bit more.

Could have been a hell of a lot worse, and like people have said, the market for Lilly shrank considerably this past week. There was nobody really bidding seriously against the Dodgers.

I'm not really disappointed, but not really excited, either. The package has some upside. Now I just hope they use the $2M in savings to spend on some additional signings to boost the farm.

My main problem with the return is that DeWitt is very redundant to Fontenot. I would have rather gone after all minor league players in return.

Is DeWitt a rental or is he under a few years of team control? Any chance he'll thrive in the more hitter friendly Wrigley? Again, it makes me wonder if Fontenot will be dealt in the next few hours. I remember the Red Sox having mild interest in him at 1 point.

Which makes me wonder if Fontenot isn't dealt today as well.

So the Cubs would have had Lilly on a one year deal at market price. Things could be worse.

I guess I'll give this trade a so-so. Not overwhelmed but it's not horrible either.

Which is exactly what we should have expected. We weren't exactly giving up CC Sabathia here. When you are trading a 34-year-old pitcher who is considered second-tier, you aren't going to get a top 5 prospect. It's a fine trade.

Wallach has struck out 11 and 9.8 batters per nine innings and scouts are saying he has enough really good pitches to continue to improve. He really looks like an older version of Chris Archer, and that's not bad.

Not an exciting return, but I'm ok with it. About what I figured, though I hoped we'd get another starter rather than Smit.
