i think a team that was fun bad would hit a lot, play terrible defense, and have an awful bullpen. lots and lots of leads blown in the late innings in comical ways.

"oops we lost 2-1 to paul maholm" is not fun bad.

Yeah, this team is just frustrating/depressing bad.

"Fun bad" was some of the loser teams that Sosa was on. At least you could watch for him to hit a crazy amount of homers.

This. Those terrible teams were "Plan 9 From Outer Space" fun bad. While you were losing almost every game, you got to see Sammy Sosa shine and weren't really expecting that much. This team is more "Adventures of Pluto Nash" bad. Made with a stupidly high budget, yet failing in almost every single way.

I'm only hoping that the struggles continue simply so heads will roll. I'd rather them lose 95 games and get a fresh start GM and Manager wise than go 82-80 and have the same cast of clowns around next year. Or do just decent enough that Piniella retires with dignity and we get GM Hendry with Manager Sandberg next season. And I'm about as big of a Ryno mark as you'll ever find. But we need a real leader and can't afford to be someones on the job training.

Toss me in the corner that said this team would suck before the season ever started. To this level, even I could not have imagined.

I'm sad that they suck this bad, but not for Lou and Jim. For they must go, and they must never land another major league job for as long as they live. I never want to see their ugly faces ever again.

I figured this team would be frustrating, but more in the "hover right around .500 the whole season" sense as opposed to this.

Don't get me wrong, we are probably on the same page. Maybe we just have different definitions. To me.....

140m payroll/unfun to watch/hovering around .500 = SUCK

Oh, that would have sucked, too. Nowhere near the "fun bad" thing people are talking about, but at least they would still be able to beat the likes of the Pirates and Astros. Small consolation, I know.

i said 75 wins before the season started, and right now they're on pace for 70. if we're going to blow, though, i'd really prefer we slide on down to the 65 range.

i'll probably be mad at myself for tuning out on this season come january.

Yep. I keep coming back for more, as the dregs of winter will be here soon enough.

Drafting 9th right now, but just a half game back from possibly drafting 6th.

Also just 7.5 games seperate the Hendry era Cubs from the Marlins of the same time frame.

Does it matter where we draft? Odds are we will draft someone nobody expected to get taken with that pick.

I said somewhere in the 70s and I think that's where they'll end up. The thing that frustrates me is the appearance of complacency. I remember going to a game 04 in Philly when Milton nearly no-hit them and they have the same look. Brenly called them "deadassed" the other day. I don't know if that's the right phrase but it's close. I don't think there's a need to go postal like Z did, but it's really frustrating to watch them.

Before the season I was trying to convince someone that the White Sox would suck this year. They countered with "They'll be better than the Cubs." I agreed wholeheartedly.

But count me on board with "if they're going to be bad, I want them to be really bad" mindset. I want Ricketts to clean house.

Me too. I find it hard as a fan to hope that my team loses though.

I never want them to lose, but it takes the sting off a little when they are running into each other and throwing the ball all over the place. Its like watching your kid's tee ball game, aww look how cute they are trying to play like big kids.

It's a delicate balance for me. When I'm watching a game, I'm hoping they win. But I also like seeing that they're sliding further in the standings instead of hovering around .500. I pretty much just hope that Castro, Colvin, Cashner, Soto, Marmol, Marshall, and any other young guys that are in the bullpen on a given day do good.

And someone that could have waited a good 100 more picks or so before he needed to be scooped up.

The Angels were going to take Simpson before the Cubs had another pick.

Source?

I believe there was a second team that was also expected to take Simpson before the Cubs 2nd rounder.

And let's not pretend like Josh Vitters, Andrew Cashner and Brett Jackson were reaches. They went exactly where they were expected to. Hell, BA has even said they screwed up in ranking Tyler Colvin pre-draft.

I was as upset with the Simpson pick as anybody, but the "woe is me, the Cubs will just screw it up" bit is tired.

Yeah, it certainly appears to me like Colvin was a solid pick now. I don't know much about rankings of prospects, but I do remember the up-in-arms reaction to the pick. Lots of it was based on his personality too, IIRC.

He seems like a well-grounded person to me. Just feels like a bunch of people missed the evaluation a bit on him. It happens.

I can root for it if it's ultimately for the greater good. If sucking harder than a Hoover means we get some high draft picks that will help us for years sometime down the road, plus it gets rid of Lou and Hendry, then I'm all for it. Sucking this year might mean we reap the benefits in the not-too-distant future.
