What's up with Phil Rogers and his axe to grind with Zambrano?

From his article today...

At the time, Piniella said the Cubs already had tried everything with the combustible Zambrano. But the latest program no doubt will be advertised as something new promising a breakthrough.

"I think he'll be fine,'' Piniella said. "I think the sessions that he has had will help him. I look forward to having him back and helping us win some games down the stretch."

Expect many rolled eyes in the clubhouse when Zambrano speaks.

When in doubt as to why a reporter/beat writer appears to have an axe to grind, you can assume it's because the player was mean* to them.

Sportswriters aren't journalists, they're salesmen.

*Mean being anything from ripping him to shreds every time he sees him, to not giving good quotes for his stories.

Why examine the real problems with this team when it's so much easier to just point the finger at someone like Zambrano?

Z is starting Monday vs the Giants

I'd be more excited if I didn't think the Cubs would yank him back out of the rotation when Silva comes off the DL.

Just throwing this out there...

Other than the two blow up games (season opener and the D-Lee game), Z has a 3.86 ERA this year.

I know that's kind of like saying Z doesn't suck except for those times when he does...

That's slightly interesting. Mostly because 3.86 is just about where you'd expect Z's season to end at this days. That said, in past seasons, the 3.86 ERA would include his occasional blowup games, whereas this does not.

That's exactly what it is like. A 3.86 ERA for a pitcher with his two worst games being ignored is awful.

It's clear that Zambrano runs this team... he already ran Barrett out of town in 2006 and now has dispatched DLee while managing to get a contract extension and stay a Cub in the process. Who do you guys think that he'll get rid of next? Hopefully Koyie Hill.
