I'm all for seeing what they can get for Fukudome at this point and what they might have in Colvin, although it isn't based on how Colvin is more energetic towards the game.

Don't be fooled by the apathy I've got; I'm still I'm still Fukudome on the block.

you're a loser

I've been trying to think of a jenny from the block reference this whole time

not the definition of a baseball player

great line. Incredibly stupid thing to say, but great line nonetheless.

When I think of baseball player, I think of players like Colvin, etc. I would give some other names, but then I would get crucified for putting those guys' names in the same sentence with Colvin.

My point with the "baseball player" remark was that when I look at Colvin, I see a young player who is eager for his opportunity, but still goes out and hits in a lesser role. And when he does start, he's got a hop in his step and it is just fun to watch him out there. I don't really get the same vibe from Kosuke, that's all.

So you would consider Soriano the absolute, unequivocal definition of a baseball player, then?

This can't go unnoticed. Well played.

You understand that baseball players don't have choices in their "role", right? It's not like Colvin says "You know...I'm not really ready to be a regular starter, so I think I'll take a backseat while I learn my place in this game."

The "vibe" you get from players is a poor argument to use on this board.

Okay fair enough. What kind of arguments would you say are effective on this board then? Stats only?

Baseball (statistically speaking), as you should know, is based of averages and percentages. Earned-run average, batting average, winning percentage, etc.

Say hello to my new sig.

Wow.

We generally prefer those that actually make some sense.

What part of my argument didn't make sense? You can't always look at the monthly splits.

One's that aren't based around "he looks like a baseball player" would be a good start. I'm for Colvin getting a lot of playing time at this point, but not because of the stupid nonsensical stuff you're saying.

Of course not. But there's a massive collection of data out there on every player. Dismissing that information because you think someone doesn't look like someone that cares is ridiculous.

"I reject your reality and choose to substitute my own" is not an argument that will work.

Your conclusions may be absolutely correct. But the arguments you're using to get there are ridiculous.

It's difficult, especially from the perspective of a fan, to determine how valuable a player is simply by commenting on how he looks or how you perceive him to be handling a certain role. Colvin has been valuable to the Cubs so far this year because he's been very productive, not so much because of his look.

On the other hand, you criticized Kosuke for not looking like a baseball player, and yet he's been very productive as well – one of the best players on the team. If a player is being productive and benefiting the team on the field, the stats will tell you that. It's far too subjective to try to determine a player's value by how you perceive he looks.

If somebody argued that Kosuke will become an MVP candidate because of the way he looks when he plays, what would you say?

You asked if Kosuke cares. What would make you think Kosuke doesn't care? He has done well when he comes in as a pinch hitter. He's been excellent in the clutch. He asks a man to come halfway around the world just to help him with his swing. If he didn't care, would he do any of these things? Why would he even be playing in America in the first place if not for the challenge? Also he's been continually fine tuning his swing which is not something that many veterans like to do.

Fukudome seems to do things in a very professional manner. That's a very mature approach to take. Just because he doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve doesn't mean he doesn't care. It is pretty obvious he does from all the work he puts in, the fact that he's ready for all situations, and the occasional emotion he shows when an important call does go against him.

What is your non-looking baseball player all-star team? It could be somebody who's body type isn't typical, or someone who throws or hits funny. And what profession should they really be in?

My team is going to be heavy (no pun intended) in ex or current Cub players.

1. Lastings Milledge - RF (Rapper)

2. Cal Ripken Jr. - SS (Politician)

4. Cecil Fielder - DH (International Federation of ADVANCED Competitive Eating)

5. Mike Piazza - C (Truck Driver)

6. Glenallen Hill - LF (Bodyguard)

7. Gary Gaetti - 3B (Car Salesman)

8. Mike Fontenot - 2B (Jockey)

9. Hunter Pence - CF (Badminton)

June is a summer month.

April + May 2009 = .946 OPS

June on = .738 OPS

There are more days in June that aren't summer than there are that is summer. 20 days are "spring" 10 days are summer.

We're not using the farmer's almanac or some arcane meteorological definition here. When people talk about summer they're including June.

"Meteorological summer" is June through August, actually. Astronomical summer starts on the solstice /pedant

Posted

Meteorological summer goes from June 1 through August 31. Statistically, it's a lot easier to lump those three months together than to go from the summer solstice to the autumnal equinox.

Try it!

We have already. Looking at those 3 months for Fukudome in 2009 doesn't even come close to showing that he sucks in the summer.

Unfortunately for you 2009 wasn't the only summer he has played. And his numbers June 2009 were brutal. Looking at his three year splits his June/July/August OPS numbers were .654/.808/.729 and his Sept .603. He clearly wears out and becomes less productive as the year progresses.

I guess what bothers me the most about this whole discussion is that usually we moan and complain that Lou worries more about salary or veteran status rather than playing the player that is actually producing better. Colvin's OPS so far this year is .955  and he has been fairly steady throughout. Fukudome went from OPSing .715 in May to .556 in June.

I don't have any problem whatsoever about playing a guy that is performing better.
