It's certainly possible he'll do the same thing as Fontenot, but at this point there's no harm in playing him and finding out.

The harm is it hurts Fukudome's trade value. Kosuke needs to start to keep his trade value high or we'll have a $13 million player sitting on the bench unmovable.

If we can trade Kosuke, however, I have no problem at all giving all the starts to Colvin (similarly to what Castro's done since being called up).

Fukudome sitting on the bench does more for his trade value, than Fukudome playing and OPSing .499. Plus, he is being outplayed by pretty badly (.889 to .499).

Yeah, but the likelihood of him continuing to OPS .499 or anywhere in that area is just barely above 0. Starting Colvin some while Kosuke is working with Sasaki isn't a bad idea, but sitting Kosuke indefinitely for the rest of the year isn't.

It all depends on how Colvin is playing. If he continues to hit well he should continue to get the bulk of the playing time.

It is a good idea to sit Kosuke for the rest of the year? Why?

You said of both things, "isn't", but you should have said "starting Colvin.... isn't, but sitting Kosuke.... is."

Not if we want to trade Kosuke for anything at all. You're going to be sitting somebody who is hitting well once Kosuke starts hitting again (which he will), so you might as well start the guy who you're going to want to trade by the deadline or the offseason.

If Kosuke does nothing but sit on the bench the rest of the year, we'll be stuck with a $13 million bench player the entirety of next year. If Kosuke plays and plays well – which is likely – we'll have a chance to get something for him either at the deadline or during the offseason. Then we can start Colvin without thinking twice about it.

Yep, you're right. I just re-read my post and it finally hit me what I said. Thanks.

Just to clarify, Soriano has sucked in June, and Byrd has sucked for the second half of June. There isn't an OF on this team that has to start every day, can start every day, or should start every day. There are plenty of opportunities to get Colvin in there without making Fukudome the scapegoat.

Right. Colvin doesn't have to wither away on the bench if he isn't starting for Kosuke. He can still get ABs in each of the three OF positions while we work on trading Kosuke. Then give Colvin the full-time right field duties.

Byrd's really the only one that's stunk over most of June, but then you run into the issue of playing Colvin too much in CF.

I really just hope they play Kosuke and he has a nice bounce back summer like last year and they can move him in a decent deal. Then Colvin can get plenty of starts (not that he'll be lacking for playing time in the meantime).

That's a strange statement to make. Byrd was definitely hotter in the first half of June and has slumped the second half. At the same time, he still has actually improved his season numbers in June. And he's definitely been better than the other two outfielders as Soriano has had a very bad month and Kosuke has had a horrific month albeit in limited playing time.

I was just going primarily by their last two weeks. Byrd started off doing well, which is why he's got a kick ass .340 .386 .500 .886 line for the last 28 days. Unfortunately, he's got a .231 .259 .288 .548 line over the last 2 weeks and a .192 .222 .192 .415 over the last week.

Soriano's last month has an underwhelming .227 .316 .409 .725 line, but he's basically pulling the opposite of Byrd with a .297 .366 .486 .852 line over the last 2 weeks and a very promising .278 .381 .556 .937 over the last week. That's why it makes more sense for Byrd to get some extra days off for Colvin, and that's why the issue of Colvin playing CF comes up.

Colvin's June numbers, FYI, are mostly propped up by hitting home runs at an insane rate, hence why his June looks like this: .281 .303 .563 .866 with 5 home runs. The last 2 weeks he's pulled .243 .263 .514 .777 with 3 home runs. Now he's showing .227 .227 .500 .727 over the last week with 2 home runs.
