The ESPN game cast keep using the phrase "kept a clean sheet".

ESPN Stats & Info: Algeria have never kept a clean sheet in seven World Cup matches.

Do they just mean not allowing a goal?

They talked about the sheet when Slovenia was getting all those yellow cards, so I assume that's what it refers to.

Ahh...ok. Glad I asked then.

Oh, okay. What were they referring to when they were talking about all the guys going on the sheet with yellows? Different sheet? Or did I just hear wrong.

Usually they say "in the book" or "it's a booking" for cards.

If it was Harkes saying it, he probably just screwed up

ALG guy gets his shorts pulled down, but he gets the foul called on him.

Is the US/SLV ref making these calls!?

I thought he was called offsides first. Something was called before his shorts were pulled.

lol, this guy I work with is trying to make the argument that because Mali is primarily an Islamic country, the ref has an anti-USA bias and was trying to blow the game.

do you have evidence of the contrary?

Just that Mali isn't really know for its extremist muslum population. And since most muslums are just peaceful people who believe in Islam and have no reason to hate, I just don't see how likely it is for an extremeist muslim to grow up in Mali and decide to exact his revenge on the Western devils by reffing football matches in hopes that he can one day work a World Cup game that the US is playing in so he can purposely botch the game in the opponent's favor.

I don't think you have to be an "extremist" to hate the US, and you don't have to plot your entire life to become the ref in a match you can screw them in.

I know you are just humoring the argument and so am I, but yes you could hate the US and not be an extremeist, but then it has nothing to do with being Muslim. What reason would a Muslum in Mali have to hate the US? The US sends a crapload of aid down there and has been doing it for some time. Islam doesn't = hate USA as you know. He could just not like the US, but it has nothing to do with being Muslim.

He could, or he could hate him because of how he perceives they treat Muslim nations, or because of the US history of slaves from western Africa, or because an American knocked up his sister and ran off, or banged his wife, or he just took money.

Until a couple of years ago, British referees didn't use cards, just a notebook - that's what that turn of phrase "booked" is referring to.

Algeria, did you forget that you failed to hydrate before the game? Isn't it hotter than you were expecting?

If the USA would have won today, and the UK/Algeria game ended in a tie, I think the US would have already clinched a trip to the knockout stage...

Edit: no wait, an Algeria win over the USA and a Slovenia or UK win would leave the USA tied with Algeria for the runner up spot, or if USA lost and Slovenia drew, they'd all 3 be tied with 4 points. Gah

There really shouldn't be much stoppage time, yet it'll still probably be 3 minutes just to piss me off.

I'm not complaining if it helps the USA, but wow.

England looked like dog [expletive] all match long. What's the deal? Too bad Green is on the bench, with his stone hands at least 1 goal might have been scored in these (will end up) ~95 minutes.

God I hope Algeria knick a goal here.

If they do, we advance outright with a win Wednesday.

They already said its gonna be 4 minutes of stoppage time added on.

Umm... quoted the wrong message here. #-o

I think Slovenia is the best beneficiary of a tie here. If they tie, they advance with a draw against England. OR if they lose to England, the US has to win to knock them out.

ESPN graphic is showing 3 minutes added on, but could have swore the announcer said 4 mins. :-k

It pretty much does mean that most people in a country will dislike the US. Mali, however, is an exception and is one of the countries with the highest approval rates towards the US. link Aside from Senegal, no other majority Muslim country is over Bangledesh's 53% favorable rating. All others are majority unfavorable (aside from Kuwait's plurality unfavorable). The bottom of the list (most unfavorable) is Muslim countries+Argentina

I've only been 75% watching, has their goalie even made a save yet?

The phantom foul on our third goal is one of the things I hate about refereeing today.

On corners and free kicks that are crossed into the box, if the goalkeeper goes down, it's almost always a foul, even if the goalkeeper runs into a teammate. If a defender goes down, there's likely to be a foul call on the other team. If a defender and an attacker both grab each other and a foul is called, it's going against the attacker 100 percent of the time. Because all of this happens in the penalty area, referees are so hesitant to give PK's that they swallow their whistles unless a blatant foul is committed.

All this does is give free reign to the defenders to grab and hold as much as they want with little worry about giving up a penalty kick.

Wow imagine if Slovenia wouldn't have scored that late goal against Algeria...it'd be 2's across the board in this group.
