Rooney was critical of the supporters' reaction as he walked off the pitch in Cape Town, saying into a television camera: "Nice to see your own fans booing you, you football 'supporters'."

Rooney's in South Africa? Wasn't really sure.

nsbb determined that about 3 hours ago.

you think I read everyone's posts?

you think people haven't discussed the scenarios 3+ hours after the completion of the england-algeria game?

I just watched the game again. Thoughts:

-Slovenia made the decision to try and beat on Dempsey and mark him very tightly. It worked to a certain extent. He worked hard and created some chances, but was overall fairly quiet.

-I wanted Torres, but he didn't play well. Kudos to Bob for making the right call and pulling him. Edu and Benny didn't do much, but they worked hard.

-I'm still not impressed with Jozy during these 2 games. When he decides to work hard, he's a force. When he drifts, he's infuriating.

-Landon took a ballsy shot. Great decision. He was also beat up a little, so from the run of play he was limited, but his set pieces were fantastic.

-Findley was useless. Found himself in space and made the wrong decision almost every time. I'm glad he's suspended for Wednesday.

-Gooch should sit. Either play Goodison or move Boca central and play Specs or Bornstein.

-Bob Bradley needs to correct this conceding early ish.

-We never looked composed during the entire game. In the first half, we seemed so shocked at how aggressive Slovenia was, we never really took control of the midfield. In the 2nd, we were pressing so hard to equalize that we never found a defensive shape, and were really lucky to not give up a 3rd. There were some stunningly bad giveaways at midfield that led to breaks and we were very fortunate.

-On Wednesday, Buddle for Findley and Edu in with Mikey. Algeria can advance with a win, so they're going to play open. They're technically pretty sound. Comparable to Egypt if you will.

1st thing I said. If he doesn't correct and the US don't advance we won't be talking about him anymore. Hell Capello could be his replacement. Historically Bradley's teams play well when they have too.

Michael Bradley is going to get linked to some huge clubs after this tournament. He's been our player of the tournament.

I agree. He looks calmer on the ball than we've ever seen him.

The pass he made to play Findley in behind the Slovenian defense early was fantastic.

Normally I'd be ticked that one of our players got a BS yellow and has to sit out but in this case, I couldn't care less.

Hopefully Buddle can come in an have an impact like he did against Australia.

Scoring is up by a goal per game during the second round of games.

25 goals in 16 games (1.56 per game) in the first round robin

18 goals in 7 games (2.57 per game) so far in the second round robin

We've also had four games with at least three goals in the second versus only two during the first.

I haven't been able to watch too much because of work but that was probably one of the better games I've seen thus far.

HUP, HOLLAND, HUP!

Nice win, though it really should have been 3-0 (Japanese goalie absolutely stonewalled 2 break aways)

He hasn't made any clumsy challenges yet and is card free. Lalas was talking about how much he has matured over the past year, it does appear to be showing. I wouldn't mind a trip back to Holland to PSV or Ajax.

Sneijder kicked the piss out of his goal today. Keeper should have done better but it was still a blast. Holland still aren't playing up to potential, but at least they are no England.

I have to say, as a non-soccer fan, that call and the complete non-reviewable nature of it has made me feel justified in my apathy. Having stewed on it for a day after the fact, it just feels so whimsical and arbitrary. As a big sports fan, I've wanted to use this world cup to enhance my appreciation for soccer. Hopefully it will still happen. But this incident leaves a bitter taste.

In all of "our" sports, you will see the umpires and referees get together as a group to try to get the call right. They'll talk to the players, the coaches to give explanations of the call. They will review replays in many cases to make sure they get it right. In hockey, they will even call the league office in real time to ensure as accurate a judging as possible.

In soccer, no such luck. The game is ruled by fiat through the whims of a single authority on the field.

In the opinion of a relative outsider, the "beautiful sport" is far too caught up in its "beauty". FIFA should be looking at how they can improve the game so that things like this don't happen.

From everything I've heard and read over the past week, though, that is not going to happen any time soon.
