If Edu did anything that would be a foul, it happened just as/before Donovan hit the free kick then because I saw that BTN replay and like I described above, Edu takes a curving route around a Slov with no contact before putting the ball in the back of the net.

ESPN just showed it again, and it looked to me like he put his hands on the other player, not anymore than all the other players were doing, but there was contact.

Ok, even if he did put his hands on the Slov, then it was with no force cause it didn't change the body movement or motion of the opposing player. And if that's called, how do 3 US players get blatantly held/accosted - all within very close proximity to each other - but not seen or called?

I think the answer to that is the ref was looking to call a foul on the US, so he saw a foul on the US and didn't see anything else.

We pretty much need ENG to at least draw ALG today, right?

I'm thinking that if ALG somehow upsets ENG, that makes things pretty hairy going into the final round of group play, for the US.

Standings would be;

SLV 4

ALG 3

USA 2

ENG 1

That would mean that a US win over ALG would be required to advance, right? Not saying it wouldn't happen, but with the way the US likes to play from behind, not sure I like the idea of "anything other than a win" prevents them advancing out of group play.

Aren't they more likely than not going to need a win regardless?

Yes, Algeria winning means we have to beat Algeria. It also guarantees us advancement if we win, and probably wins us the group too. So a little more risk, a little more reward.

Yeah, but in the realm of "what result this afternoon creates the path of least resistance", a tie this afternoon means the US is capable of advancing with a tie against Algeria.

We really oughta be England fans at this point, right?

Not today.

Well, maybe in a "England can demoralize Algeria so it makes it easier for us to roll them and proves we should roll them" sort of way, but if Algeria can get anything out of this game it would be nice. A tie this afternoon means the US is through with a win of any margin against Algeria.

If Algeria ties, they still have something to play for when they play the USA. I don't know what's worse...an Algeria with something to play for or one with nothing.

It's the World Cup and they have no expectations, they're going to be going all out regardless. Not only does a tie lower the threshold needed for the US to advance, it increases the number of avenues in which they can advance. They wouldn't necessarily need to beat Algeria, for example.

It would increase our chances of winning the group as well as the only way it can happen if England wins is if they tie Slovenia. But if they tie today, they can beat Slovenia and we could still win the group.

if they don't get a win during group play, do they really deserve to advance? (even though they really should have won today and it was taken away from them by a disgrace)

Honestly, I agree with you.

If we don't show up again for a half and can't beat a team that's in all probablility going to get pantsed today, we don't deserve to advance.

I went home during lunch to take the dog out quickly and had to watch Bradley's goal 3 times to calm me down.

I really don't feel like waiting another hour for England's match to begin.

Not that this excuses the piss poor defending in the first, but no US player is fouling anyone there.

I think Gooch needs to sit on Wednesday. He's at least partially responsible for all 3 goals we've conceded.

Is that Edu making his run at the goal in the upper left corner??

And again with more proof that he didn't foul anyone before/during the free kick.

FWIW, official word is that there was a foul called on Boca.

What did Boca do? He got put in a headlock and ended up on the ground.

How sad is it that a still picture of that event makes it literally look like the Slov hugging Bradley is actually the one wearing the US jersey (if Bradley were wearing a short-sleeve top).

But no, there was not a single foul committed by any Slovenian player in that scrum. Only a phantom foul to wipe out the game-winner. [-(

Are guys blind?? Can't you see Edu's hand on that Slovenian player's back?!? He might as well have clotheslined the guy with that kind of contact. I can see why the ref ignored all the other fouls and chose to make the one on Edu.

How would you replace him? Straight up with Goodison?

Is he the one that Slov #7 is trying to get in a headlock and give a noogie to? If so, that is even worse than calling a phantom one on Edu. The US player in #7's grasp got absolutely raped.

England does realize that anything but a win here really puts them in a bit of a hole, right?

Game just really seems to have a "ho-hum, whatever" feel from their side so far.
