Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein reports that the Cubs may recall RHP Andrew Cashner from Triple-A on Monday.

Cashner had recently moved to the bullpen for Triple-A Iowa, so it's a good bet that the Cubs will keep him there when they do call him up. Randy Wells' horrid start yesterday really taxed the Cubs' bullpen, so this move could be a temporary one, or perhaps the front office has decided that their first-round pick from 2008 has nothing left to prove at Triple-A.

Greeeeaaaat.

it doesn't make sense to carry four lefties (gorzo, marshall, grabow, russell) in the bullpen. who gets sent down? russell isn't that good but he's probably pitched well enough to hang around. grabow should go away but won't because of his contract. i guess it wouldn't surprise me if gorzo got sent to iowa and kept starting there.

Gorzelanny has no options left.

Since they put him in the bullpen anyway, I think this is a good move. Get him up to the majors and see if he can contribute. If not, he likely goes back to starting in AAA.

The right move would be to do something with Grabow (ideally release him but more likely put him on the DL with a phantom injury). The likely move, I feel, is to send Russell down. He certainly doesn't deserve it, especially after 4 scoreless innings after Wells' mess, but he has options and I doubt the Cubs want 4 left-handed relievers. This is assuming no trade is made.

Unless Gorzelanny is dealt, my guess is Grabow to the DL, Guzman to the 60 Day(that hasn't happened yet, right?) and Cashner brought up. If Gorzelanny IS dealt, I think it's going to have to be for guys who are not on the 40 man roster. We don't have the spots available, assuming we're going to add Cashner to it, as it is.

#Cubs will call up Andrew Cashner on Mon in Pitt

Looks like the Cubs would prefer a potential 8th inning reliever over a potential ace. I hate this organization.

While I disagree with the sentiment that this will completely derail his future as a starter, I really dont think this is the right move or a rational move. The pen is not the problem it once was, and what we need is 1 more quality righty, which we could surely get without doing this.

It probably won't completely derail but it really knocks his chances of being a successful starter next season since he can't log 120+ innings next year.

I certainly want to see Cashner as a starter, but at least instead of the assinine moves where he and Jackson were having to "prove" themselves able to pitch out of the pen, at least they're going ahead and bringing him up.

Conceivably, he COULD get 50ish innings over the rest of the year out of the pen, putting him over 100 again anyway. And I have hope that once they fall out of the race, they'll trade Lilly and stretch him back out again, to where he could get to 120ish or so. I doubt it happens and I don't want to see him going back and forth, but I really, really want to see him and Jackson in our rotation next season and this scenario may be the only way we could see that happen.

The Cubs always seem to find a way to minimize their players' value before trading them for nothing... See Gorzellany, a cheap and potentially valuable commodity, who will most likely end up getting dealt for very little in return.

i think we all know how this will go. in like his second or third outing, he'll walk a couple guys and lou will then use him only twice in the next 3 weeks. then when the cubs are out of it, they'll send him back to iowa to start and he'll be a mess.

Kinda like what the Cubs did with Castro?

I think I am still irritated that Gorzo is forced into a demotion, because Grabow sucks at his job. Cashner is being brought up because the organization hasn't a clue as to what they want to do. Yeah, I think, let me chance that to I know I am still irritated by this organization's lack of direction.

Regardless of how you feel they are being handled, it's nice to have exciting young talent like Castro, Cashner, and Jackson. Last year at this time I didn't think we'd see arguments on how several minor leaguers were going to be used at the major league level.

Will Cashner be available for today's game?
One article I read (maybe it was the one I linked to) said they "hope" he will be in Pittsburgh today. It didn't specify whether that meant in time for today's game or arriving later today and available for tomorrow's game.

EDIT: Len just mentioned that Cashner is here.
