(Assuming they clean house) I hope Ricketts let the new GM pick the new manager and not do the hiring ass backwards.

If they every intention of not bringing Hendry back, start with the GM 1st. I'd really like for them to use a compentent group of baseball advisors to help in that process rather than the just the Ricketts family trying to play a video game. (although, I think the Trib did this and it brought them MacPhail).

I hope they do the backwards hiring insomuch as they keep Rothschild and Jaramillo around. Both are respected enough around the league that I don't it would irritate a new manager and GM and both are a couple of the best coaches in the game.

Otherwise I agree completely with you.

Whether Rothschild and Jaramillo are kept may depend on the new manager. If it's a manager with a lengthy track record, he'll probably be allowed to bring in his own coaches that he's familiar with. If they go the route of hiring Sandberg or Trammell or someone along those lines, I think there's a greater chance we see Larry and Rudy retained.

That's probably right, though Lou did keep Rothschild around. I'm hoping the reputation they have around the league prompts the new manager to keep them. I'd bet there'd be a bit of encouragement from Ricketts to not have to eat Jaramillo's brand new contract after the first year.

IIRC, Lou and Larry had a previous relkationship. I believe Larry was Lou's pitching coach for the Reds.

There is some recent precedence with the Cubs for requiring even an experienced manager to keep a coach with time remaining on a multi-year contract. Dusty was stuck with Larry even though he clearly would have preferred Dick Pole as pitching coach.

I'm hoping a manager just decides to keep Larry around since he's easily one of the best pitching coaches in the game.

I'm wondering if Rothschild might wish to be considered for the manager's job. He managed in Tampa and obviously the success wasn't there. Also, pitching coaches seem to have a bad track record when becoming manager, but I wonder if he has interest in doing it or would rather just remain a pitching coach the remainder of his career.

Why the heck is Lee still batting in the middle of the order? If you are not producing you should be moved down.

seriously the guy has 3 rbi in his last 20 games. And he is our 3 hitter/clubhouse leader? Oh and 1/3 of his rbi to begin with are from driving in himself. And when I was calling him Jermaine Dye in April everyone thought I was crazy.

Posted
Because Dye would still be much worse.

You don't know that.

Oh, but I do. I have wondrous and terrible powers.

Besides, who cares what Dye could do? What, they were supposed to sign him in anticipation of playing him instead of Lee? Or they should have signed him over Nady? People do remember how much he was demanding, right? And how not coincidentally he's still unsigned?

Posted

oh I don't really care about Dye playing here at all. maybe he helps maybe not either way we still suck.

I was just saying that Lee is currently that bad and probably untradable. Dye had a good half before he fell apart. Lee needs to do the reverse but I don't see him coming anywhere close to a .942 ops in the second half. He looks old and completely lost at the plate.

I didnt want to start a new thread for this, so I thought this was just as good a place as any. Its from fan graphs ranking the top 50m players as far as trade value goes. Geo is ranked #42, and I figured NSBB as a whole would get kick out of what they had to say about him. Almost as though one of us wrote the last part.

#42 – Geovany Soto, C, Chicago

Like Montero, Soto is a young, offensive backstop with the ability to stay behind the plate. He’s rebounded from last year’s disappointing sophomore campaign, offering his usual blend of patience and power while inexplicably hitting eighth for the Cubs. Given his ability to drive the ball, he could hit in the middle of the order for most teams, and when you have a 27-year-old cacher who can provide that kind of punch, you have a highly valuable piece. The Cubs will control his rights for three more years, and it shouldn’t take them that long to figure out that he’s better than Koyie Hill.

hey lou:

''For us to be so close to nailing down a third win in the series in one play, it was a tough loss,'' said Wells, who scattered seven hits in seven scoreless innings. ''That's one of the toughest plays in the game. Having been a catcher, you know you're almost certainly going to be in a collision. Geo busts his butt every day, so you can't think twice about the effort there. He was just trying to make sure the plate was blocked.''

that's how you stick up for one of your players. instead you have to be a complete dick, throw geo under the bus after the game and pinch hit for one of your best hitters while one of the weakest hitters on the team gets to bat to keep the game alive. can't wait for this d-bag to go away; get someone in here who won't crap all over one of the team's best players.

Soto botches a routine play because he is afraid of a collision, Wells even alludes to it, yet you all still blame Piniella. Come on.

reading is a skill.

wells STUCK UP for soto - said that you're bracing for the collision, and soto rushed it - i don't think he was afraid of getting hit. piniella is a dick for throwing him under the bus in the press conference, just like he's a dick for continuing to play his boy koyie hill, who hits like some of us would, instead of one of the more productive catchers in baseball.

he's a bad manager and i can't wait for him to be gone.

Reading between the lines is the real skill.

Why does Wells even bring up the collision aspect if he does't think it was crutial to the outcome of the play ?

Soto was afraid of being hit, and botched a very routine play. End of story. Marmol then decided to do his best Carlos Zambrano impersonation, and fall apart. That damn Lou .

Soto should be getting the bulk of the playing time because of his bat, and has lately. But anyone who thinks Hill is not markedly better on defense is only fooling themselves.

Uh, no. Hill is marginally better on defense at best, and nowhere near being better enough to justify all the times Soto's been switched out for him during a game.

Why? Probably because a reporter asked Wells.

And Hill isn't that much better than Soto defensively and his bat and defense certainly doesn't warrant the amount of playing time he gets.

Uh ??? Is the uh just for emphisis, or does it add value to the discussion ? Or do you preface your spoken sentences with uh ?

I am not going to debate Hill vs Soto on defense, and I already stated that Soto should get the bulk of the playing time.

My point, as I am sure you all are capable of understanding, yet chose to ignore, is that Soto blows a very easy play, Marmol implodes, yet you all pop off about Lou Piniella. Soto and Marmol sucked yesterday, and blew the game, not Lou. At least they were both man enough to own up to it.

Complaining about Lou after yesterdays fiasco just makes you look foolish.

So it wasn't Lou who pinch hit for arguably our best hitter this season?

I believe Truffle's complaint was that Lou threw Soto under the bus:

that's how you stick up for one of your players. instead you have to be a complete dick, throw geo under the bus after the game and pinch hit for one of your best hitters while one of the weakest hitters on the team gets to bat to keep the game alive. can't wait for this d-bag to go away; get someone in here who won't crap all over one of the team's best players.

That doesn't read like Truffle is blaming Lou for the loss.

Soto is so much better than Hill offensively, that he would have to be Jake Fox-like at catcher to justify Hill starting over Soto.
