When they start this fire sale, please start with dumping Hendry first. Do not let this man have the authority to do even more damage than he has already done.

Hendry is good at trading. I'd be fine with him orchestrating a fire sale.

Greg Maddux for Cesar Izturis is not good. Who are some other trade deadline deals that made us all giddy with delight? Steve Trachsel?

Since Hendry probably knows he has no future with this team, I don't trust him to make any deals that could impact the future.

Nomar, but the Izturis deal brings us back to even.

He hasn't been in sell mode that much. His moves to acquire help at the deadline have been pretty damned good.

Nomar, Ramirez/Lofton and Harden all come to mind.

Don't know how you can trust someone who knows the writing is on the wall with the future of the ballclub. I certainly don't.

He could also approach it thinking it may be his only way to save his job.

That's just one trade in many that he's pulled off. As others have mentioned, the Nomar, Ramirez/Lofton and Harden deals were all good. He also got Gorzelany last year without giving up anything.

As for purely salary dumps, Walker for Ceda was a pretty good value. Barrett for Kyler Burke is looking better all the time. We got a serviceable reliever (Justin Berg) for Matt Lawton.

I don't know why not. It's not like he's going to sabotage the franchise or anything. If he makes awful trades just to spite Ricketts, it'll make it harder for him to get another GM job.

As I said, he's not going to sabotage the team. If he does, he's not going to get another GM job whereas right now he's respected enough around the game to at least garner interest from clubs.

Even if Ricketts tells him he's going to fire him, the more good trades Hendry makes at the deadline, the more good he has going for him when he's looking for another job. It's a way to show he can find value in a trade.

I've seen enough of Hendry to believe he's the kind of guy that's going to do his best under whatever circumstance. Whether or not his best is good enough is another question.

Yeah, we're probably getting close to the point where Lou should get canned. 12 games back in the worst division in the NL with our obscene payroll is unacceptable.

Hendry needs to go too, but I'd agree that he might be the best person to pull off a firesale so you might want to keep him on until August or so.

Agreed. Hes gonna try, it wont be enough, but he will give his all.

Hearing rumors that once Lou is gone after this season, Joe Torre could be a nice fit. But the Cubs are going to stink next year so why would he want to get in that mess?

He does?

A blindfolded, deaf chimp could have a winning managerial record with the teams he's luckily fallen backasswards into.

THE DUDE IS JUST A WINNAR.

Yeah, plus I'm sure he has aspirations beyond the end of this year. Being known as a GM who did a half-assed hack job on his way out the door certainly wouldn't help them.

My only problem has to do with the qualities he would look for in prospects returning in trades.

Maybe from a business stand point getting rid of Lou and Jim is the best thing to do at this point. Theyve been running the team into the ground since the end of the '08 season. For the longest time, in Chicago, it was the Cubs and the Bears and then everyone else. All of the sudden, the Hawks win a championship, the Bulls are gaining national attention for the first time since the Jordan era with Labron fever, and the White Sox are in position to possibly make another playoff run. The Cubs are becoming irrelevant, and maybe from a business standpoint, losing doesnt matter as long as your making money, but becoming Chicagos 5th team does.

Maybe Ricketts was exaggerating when he presented himself as this huge Cubs fan. I know he met his wife in the Wrigley Bleachers, but I met mine at a bar, and Im not an alchaholic. Every Cubs fan I know, and I know a lot is calling for Jim and Lous heads, but the guy who can make it happen isnt. Im not saying hes not a Cubs fan at all, but maybe he played it up a bit to make his pitch.

It's way too early to be wondering whether Ricketts is a Cub fan or not. He probably just wants to see first-hand how Lou and Hendry operate for a year before making a decision on them. Frans aren't going to show at Wrigley and the Cubs aren't going to become more relevant (if they've lost long-term relevance) depending on who the GM and manager are. Fans will show up if the team wins and Lou and Hendry are not holding this team back from winning.

Also, again, it's not going to have that much of a real effect firing Lou and Hendry right now. Unless Ricketss plans on promoting from inside for either position then the replacements for the season would be stopgap guys anyway and not likely large improvements (or improvements at all) over Lou/Hendry.

Exactly. I think it's a safe assumption Lou and Hendry are gone after the season. The fact they aren't now only tells me they just want to clean the slate after the season, and probably hire replacements from outside the organization.

Speculating over whether or nor Ricketts is a Cubs fan is stupid. He is a businessman first, and has to realize when firing someone and paying out the rest of their contract for nothing will help, and when it won't. Firing Hendry and Lou now won't help the 2010 Cubs. The said they'd give Hendry a year, and it won't hurt them to be good to their word.

Like I've said, if we're in November and no changes have been made, I'll start to worry.

(Assuming they clean house) I hope Ricketts let the new GM pick the new manager and not do the hiring ass backwards.

If they every intention of not bringing Hendry back, start with the GM 1st. I'd really like for them to use a compentent group of baseball advisors to help in that process rather than the just the Ricketts family trying to play a video game. (although, I think the Trib did this and it brought them MacPhail).

I hope they do the backwards hiring insomuch as they keep Rothschild and Jaramillo around. Both are respected enough around the league that I don't it would irritate a new manager and GM and both are a couple of the best coaches in the game.

Otherwise I agree completely with you.
