Stevens has all the leverage in the world, if he wants to leave he's going to take an elite job. Mizzou, Illinois, Tennessee, Purdue, etc. are not elite jobs. So people think they can change his mind by throwing a ton of money at him. Ignoring that money may not be THE factor for Stevens(which would be consistent with his approach so far), schools don't have a few million dollars per year just waiting to throw at a coaching upgrade.

Purely on finances only, Tennessee could afford to pay Stevens in the $4-5 million range. Mike Hamilton has shown he doesn't have an interest in paying a new coach that type of money and it'd be incredibly awkward having the basketball coach making more than the football coach, but Tennessee's boosters were paying upwards of $5-6 million a year for Fulmer and the carousel of basketball coaches just a few years ago.

Now, I don't think offering that type of money would have made any difference whatsoever in Stevens' interest in Tennessee, but having the money to pay him shouldn't have been an issue.

Now I'm hearing Painter still isn't decided. Mizzou's deadline has come and gone so I guess that doesn't matter. He needs to make up his damn mind.

"No," Keady said when asked if he thought Weber would be interested in taking the job should Painter depart. "Illinois is a better job than Purdue. You’ve got a better recruiting state."

Reports out of Indy saying that Painter is staying put. I give up.

Reports, reports and more reports. I don't think I put any stock into "reports" anymore. :P

If Painter is staying why wouldn't it just be announced publically already? The same reports quoting a "source" as stating that Painter is staying at Purdue also state that Purdue has not heard from him. That is just a little bizarre unless Painter is trying his luck at some kind of Favre-like shenanigans.

Reports down here are that everybody is waiting to announce anything until Painter can tell the Purdue players personally what the deal is. Everybody in the St. Louis sports radio world is acting like it's a done deal.

That is kind of what I figured was happening. It just doesn't make any sense to keep everything a big secret if he is just staying at Purdue. What, he would have to meet the players to tell him he isn't leaving? lol

There's Columbia reporters saying that Painter turned Mizzou down, plus Parrish, Katz, and some Purdue people. He's staying.

His point was that Katz reported that hours before Anderson left for Arkansas.

How do Mizzou people feel about Smart? He'll obviously be a hot name. His system works well with the players at Mizzou, though I don't think their bigs have the required range. And Mizzou fans will feel doubly justified in their purchase of VCU gear.

Is he the likely next target? Is he more likely to stay on the east coast?

well, shut down the program.

I have zero pity for Mizzou. Been sick to my stomach all freaking day about this.

Smart will be the name everyone wants because he's a hot name and just beat Kansas, but I don't see that working. I've heard he wouldn't want to leave the east coast, he'll probably command more than Alden would pay for a guy with 2 years on the job, and I'm not sure Mizzou can afford to wait on his season to be over with.

I'm not really sure who the next target is, as guys like Williams, Mack, and Mooney have all turned down jobs or re-upped with their school. I've heard Jacobson from UNI, but he's uninspiring. Really wish that Painter hadn't strung us along as far as he did though, some of the reports are saying that he made up his mind to accept Mizzou and then had a change of heart last minute.
