The more I think about this, the more I think it just boils down to Painter running away from his crappy recruiting so he doesn't get slammed the same way Weber did. He's never going to win like this at Purdue again. They've peaked and he wants out. Just a theory.

You do realize his 2013 class is going to rival the 2007 class right? The 2012 class is nothing to sneeze at either. Really, he struggled recruiting 2008 and 2009.

LewJack, Byrd, Smith, and Barlow are useful role players but that's about it maybe with the exception of LewJack who could be the #2 scorer next year. Bade is garbage, Hart doesn't do much for me and the jury is out on Marcius. 2010 he had two 4 stars and Carroll (a serviceable role player) - 2011 brings two athletic 6' 7" - 6' 8" forwards that Purdue is desperately in need of.

He's had a peak of four 4 star players on the available roster. In 2013 he'll have 7 available to him and maybe 8 depending on what happens with the remaining 2013 scholarship (obviously that's if he stays). That's counting Lawson as a 3 star - I think some services have him as a 4 (and I think Hale is underrated).

He's recruiting just fine now.

A little late here, but I'm pretty happy with the Cuonzo Martin hire at Tennessee. He was one of the coaches I wanted Tennessee to look at early on, so I guess I was predisposed to like him anyway.

He'll run a different style than Pearl did, but Vol fans will learn to love it if we win. Him being a Gene Keady protege is pretty nice as well. I don't know how much coaching trees really mean, but Keady has a pretty nice one.

Still wish we had backed up the Brinks truck to Brad Stevens' house, but he probably still wouldn't have taken the job even then. Considering everything, this is a solid hire with the potential to be really, really good.

It's going to be weird cheering for Tennessee basketball.

In summary, Purdue had four 4 star recruits each of the last two years. Next year they're going to have four. 2012 they'll have five and 2013 five with one scholarship available . In his entire tenure at Purdue, he will not have had a 5 star player up until Kendall Stephens steps foot on the court in 2013.

I'll admit, it'll be kinda nice to have fans of another team rooting for us instead of against us. Still hate to see Pearl gone, however.

Do you have any thoughts on Martin as a head coach? I realize he wasn't a HC at Purdue, but you'll likely have more insight than I do anyway.

As a Wichita State fan, and seeing them play Cuonzo led MSU teams, I think Tennessee fans will really like him. He brings a suffocating defensive style and a good offense that utilizes getting shooters open. He never had a ton of prominent big men at Mizzou St, other than Weems, but he seemed to bring in a lot of tough minded, physical players, that were pretty good shooters and bought in to his system.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I've heard of Martin to this point, especially the defensive emphasis his teams have. That'll be nice to see, as Pearl's biggest weakness at UT was that his teams would get fairly lax on defense at times. That was a big problem this season - along with players being content to shoot well-defended threes instead of getting to the basket.

I think the Painter thing can still go either way. I don't think he did all this simply to get a raise for himself, I truly believe he is fed up with Morgan Burke. What is going to make it or break it is whether Mizzou's AD was truly able to convince Painter that things would be different there. Even if Painter does sign a new contract with Purdue that doesn't mean he won't still end up butting heads with Burke.

He had a big hand in recruiting most of Purdue's higher profile players before leaving including the big 4 in 2007.

In this thread alone I've read of about 5 schools wondering what would happen if "they backed the truck up" for Brad Stevens. Come the [expletive] on.

I'm still pissed Iowa didn't back the truck up for Jamie Dixon last year, he surely would have come if we backed that truck up. It's so easy to do. You just get a truck and back it up and all that pretend Monopoly money comes out and everyone is happy.

Bingo. A lot of the coaches there don't have much respect for Burke.

I feel like I am in some bizarro world. Holy hell when did Butler become the Yankees?

Best basketball program in the state of Indiana.

Stevens has all the leverage in the world, if he wants to leave he's going to take an elite job. Mizzou, Illinois, Tennessee, Purdue, etc. are not elite jobs. So people think they can change his mind by throwing a ton of money at him. Ignoring that money may not be THE factor for Stevens(which would be consistent with his approach so far), schools don't have a few million dollars per year just waiting to throw at a coaching upgrade.

What elite job is going to open up in the next few years that would make it worth it for Stevens to stick at Butler and risk his stock going down? I see UConn and that's about it.

UCLA is probably getting restless with Howland. Self might try his hand in the NBA. K and Roy are getting old. You mentioned UConn. Calipari is gonna get hit by the NCAA some day.

EDIT: More to the point, if you're convinced that Stevens isn't the exception to the rule that everyone moves up, then why didn't he do so last year?

Like anybody knew about Brad Stevens last year.

I don't know if Texas is an elite enough job, but I would throw the boat at him to replace Barnes.
