Illinois missed the tourney with a 19-14 record with wins @ Clemson, vs. Vanderbilt, vs. MSU, @ Wisconsin, and vs. Wisconsin (Neutral)

Well, they probably got screwed.

can't wait for illinois-texas. i've heard they have some HEARTLESS 5-stars on that team.

Texas? Heartless seems to be an issue for them in multiple sports.

Anybody know anything about Xavier? Iowa plays them Friday night in the Paradise Jam, then either Alabama or Seton Hall. Xavier only beat Western Michigan by 3 and then IUPU Fort Wayne took them to OT last night. They have to be better than that, don't they?

Wake lost again, this time by 21 to VCU.

I watched their game last night (For some reason the bar was showing FSN Ohio on one of the TVs by me), and I thought they looked terrible. I guess the box score sort of gave that away though.

ND slaughters Chicago State and Ben Hansbrough goes off again. I could definitely live with Ben Hansbrough as a much improved 3-point shooter this season.

To break up all the Illinois and IU talk, here are some observations from Purdue's lopsided victory over Alcorn State:

1. This could be Purdue's strongest rebounding team in a long time. Johnson, Carroll, Marcius, and even Bade give the Boilers more depth in the paint than they've had in awhile, and all are showing the ability to get position for rebounds. Granted, it was against Alcorn State...

2. For a guy who's only been playing basketball a few years, Marcius looks like he could contribute some quality minutes. Has a little trouble catching the ball though.

3. John Hart and D.J. Byrd look like they've both taken their game up a notch. Obviously, no one is going to make up for the loss of Hummel, but these guys could help soften the blow a bit with some strong outside shooting.

4. Lewis Jackson is never going to be a big scoring threat, but it's nice to have someone who can run the point and get the ball to the scorers. For a guy who's only about three feet tall, he manages to get a decent amount of rebounds, too.

5. Ryne Smith still doesn't impress me, although he looks a little more like he knows what he's doing on the defensive end. He's going to get pushed around by more physical teams though.

6. Kelsey Barlow is still a d-bag. If he doesn't get his head out of his rear end and stay out of foul trouble, he's going to lose some playing time to Terone Johnson fairly quickly.

7. Despite putting up 103 points, they don't look like they know how to play well together as a team yet. Hopefully, we'll see improvement there before conference season.

Re: Purdue

I think your 3 games next week will show you what kind of team you have. You should win them all by double digits, but they'll at least your opponents will belong on the court with you. Howard and Alcorn St combined for 9 wins total in the 2 worst conferences in the country.

Purdue's opening 2 shellackings moved them up to 8 in Pomeroy rankings, giving the Big Ten teams #2, 6, 8, 9, and 11. Conference season is going to be sick. And with the bottom of the Big Ten not being very good, any top team interested in winning the conference is going to have to sweep them all or else they'll really set themselves back.

Agreed. It was good that they were able to open with a couple of very weak opponents. I'm not necessarily worried about how the Boilers will play defensively, and I'm cautiously optimistic about their rebounding. My concern right now is how they'll react to an opponent that plays strong defense.

Hey, Mizzou gets to play a real game! Excited to see if Bowers keeps up his torrid exhibition pace, and how the freshmen and Ratliffe play.

do pom ratings really mean anything this early in the season? I don't know how they're calculated.

They have more value this season than in seasons past as he did a preseason projection for all teams that is being calculated in. In years past you'd get really screwy results after 3-4 games due to small sample sizes and how heavily strength of opponent is factored in. His blog yesterday say the preseason ratings count for roughly 5 games worth of data, and will be removed altogether sometime in January (22nd I wanna say? It coincides with some point in the season where they have little effect on the stats anyway) It's experimental, but it's at least a better guage than the screwy results he'd put out the first few weeks of seasons past.

I have a hard time seeing us lose to Maryland. I'll be very disappointed with anything less than 1-1, and mildly disappointed if we come out with just a win vs. Maryland

That's how I feel. At least beat either Texas or Pitt and everything's cool.
