Anytime an 'all time' list is done it always sparks controversy and debate.

Ultimately, it is fluff and an effort in futility by an struggling paper.

Where is Larry Biittner?

Rick Monday and Bill Madlock make the list. Seems like neither of them were with the team long enough to warrant a top 50 spot. Either that or they should have made this a top 40 list and cut some of the fluff.

The bigger question: Where's Doug Daszenzo? How can you leave off a player with a career ERA of 0.00? :D

After reading the opening paragraphs to the article, I looked up the BaseballProjection Top 500 Position Players (ordered by Historical WAR) to see who the real "Mr. Cub" ought to be.

It turns out Cap Anson is far and away the all-time Cubs leader in Historical WAR with 88.8 (as a Cub). How fitting is it that the all-time position player WAR leader for the North Siders is the same guy who:

On August 10, 1883 Anson refused to play an exhibition game against the Toledo Blue Stockings because their catcher, Moses Fleetwood Walker, was African American. When Blue Stockings Manager Charlie Morton told Anson the White Stockings would forfeit the gate receipts if they refused to play, Anson backed down. On July 14, 1887 the Chicago White Stockings played an exhibition game against the Newark Little Giants. African American George Stovey was listed in the Newark News as the Little Giants' scheduled starting pitcher. Anson objected, and Stovey did not pitch. Moreover, International League owners had voted 6-to-4 to exclude African-American players from future contracts. In September 1888 Chicago was at Syracuse for an exhibition game. Anson refused to start the game when he saw Walker’s name on the scorecard as catcher. Again, Anson pressured his opponents to find a Caucasian replacement.

Clark Griffith isn't on the list but Jose Cardenal is? I mean, I know it was a real long time ago when he played, but it seems to me that the first thing you should do before compiling such a list is check into who's been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Cub, not to mention the franchise's top 10 lists of such statistics as wins, innings pitched, games started, complete games, and that newfangled Adjusted ERA+.

If you're going to put players that were only on the team for three or four years on the list at all, shouldn't Rogers Hornsby be above Bill Madlock?

The problem with lists like this is if you make them sensibly, nobody will talk about them.

I really doubt he left out Clark Griffith to create controversy.

Whatever, when Clark's fan club finds out about this all hell will break loose. Imagine if John Kruk knew who Clark was, can you imagine his reaction? Me either.

Sosa at 8 is being too kind, since he is obviously the only person on that list to ever use a performance enhancer.

....Even though it was never proven that he used them.

....I mean, I'm sure he did, but still.
