It seems fairly obviously that Bagwell was a juicer, too. Dude is like 1/3 of his playing size right now.

Nobody thinks that would have implications to his potential "first time ballot" induction?

Maybe, but is there anything more than just people speculating? I don't recall any actual accusations.

I remember reading the SI preview issue the year after they started testing and they wrote about how Bagwell showed up to spring training that year slimmed down and had lost about 20 pounds.

Not much more than speculation but that bit of info stood out to me back then.

Dawson's wishes should be considered, as there's no Boggery afoot between him and the Cubs; Dawson works for the Marlins.

Also significant is the fact that there is no more Montreal National League entry. Who exactly stands to be hurt by an Expos snub?

The already shattered hearts of Expos fans.

all 20 of them?

Dawson has been promised by the Cubs to have his No. 8 uniform number retired if he goes into the Hall of Fame as a Cub, a source close to Dawson said on Sunday.

The killjoys at the Hall are gonna love this.

if six years of a .285/.327/.507/.834 line at corner outfield is enough to get your number retired by the cubs, then soriano is probably licking his chops.

seriously, there is no reason that andre dawson's number should be retired.

There is no way Dawson deserves to have his number retired as a Cub. He is a borderline Hall of Famer who spent a majority of his career on other teams. If the Expos franchise still existed, I could live with them retiring his number, but as much as I liked him as a player he didn't do enough with the Cubs to deserve that honor. I'm happy that Dawson was elected to the Hall of Fame, but the team should reserve number retirements for only the all-time great Cubs.

If I never heard anybody else playing jr.-steroid-sleuth, I'd die a very happy man.

They did, it's just that the franchise left their retired numbers in Montreal when they departed.

As someone who took great insult at seeing #8 issued to a couple of middling catchers, I suppose I'm in the Dawson camp. I also thought MB wearing #21 was ridiculous.

Having said that, no more modern Cubs should see their numbers retired before the club takes care of players like Gabby Hartnett and Billy Herman. Cubs history doesn't start with Ernie Banks.

Gabby didn't really have a consistent # in his career. I can't remember if he has a flag up on the roof or not, but he is woefully underappreciated by the organization. Herman? Eh, he had a nice Cub career, but he's not in the same conversation as Hartnett

It's not Dawson choice, right? Didn't they change that rule that a player can't pick which team he wants to retire under?

Ultimately it's the HOF's decision, but if it's not a slam dunk, the hall will consider a player's preference.

Maybe not, but he is a HOF and played in three World Series for the Cubs over a 10 1/2 year tour with the club.

Gabby AND Herman were both very important figures in Cubs history. Gabby is more famous (and rightfully so) because of the Homer in the Gloamin thing and because of his longevity with the team (20 seasons or thereabouts).

And being one of the greatest catchers of all time.

Even Grace should be considered ahead of Dawson for his number being retired. One key to having a number retired should be a strong connection to the team. Some could even argue that Maddux was borderline as he will mostly be remembered as a Brave. I also find it an insult to some of the other guys who had to wait and were much more deserving. Fergie had to wait more years and was not an automatic upon hall induction.

Conspiracy theory: This may be due to a change in ownership, though. The Ricketts might want to get in an extra sellout promo day at the end of April or something.

All the retired jersey nonsense is just a marketing gimmick.

Ron Santo never would have had his number retired if he wasn't a lovable diabetic announcer.
