in case anyone wanted a little more reason to feel confident...

Adam_Schefter

Barring any complications in Chicago, the Julius Peppers deal gets done and announced with the Bears by Friday afternoon.

Schefter is awesome, so take that fwiw

Holy Crap! Where did all this money come from? Julius Peppers? The Bears never get a free agent like that.

I guess that's what happens when everyone on the team except the owners might lose their jobs after 1 year?

It's an uncapped year. The money has always been there.

Biggs seems to think the Bears will sign Taylor and Manumaleuna fairly quickly too.

If they sign Manumaleuna, I hope they can get a 2nd rounder for Olsen. And I hope you're right on Taylor.

If the Bears sign this Manumaleuna guy, and trade Olsen to NE, I wonder if the Bears would take said NE pick and flip it over to Denver for Marshall? Denver isn't getting a 1st for him, and some are speculating that they would be thrill to get a 2nd rd pick.

The Bears have to be one of the more profitable teams in the NFL so the money has always been there. It's just the McCaskey's are usually pissy about spending it. Not this year with Angelo and Lovie's jobs on the line.

Bears have signed Manumanaleuna to a 5-year deal.

Yep. And Lovie is on a flight back to Chicago from Charlotte with Peppers and his agent.

It sounds like it's gonna be Manumanaleuna, Peppers, and Taylor...and still probably a safety, though not necessarily today on that one.

Angelo was a hero after the Cutler deal, a huge goat after the season, and now everybody is gonna love him again...or at least like him a whole lot more.

I like Dez Clark, but Manumaleuna is a great signing. Gives us the blocking TE that Martz wants and (hopefully) we can still keep Olsen to open up the offense a bit.

I would've preferred Rolle to Peppers, but I have no problems with either. Hopefully they turn their attention to Atogwe now.

The Desmond Clark era should end today as he is due to be paid a 475k roster bonus soon

It was due yesterday. So who knows what's going on there.

Mike & Mike compared Chicago to Washington this morning, and they were saying "we know this doesn't work."

Sour grapes.

Are there examples of it working?

I'm not as up-to-date on the Bears' offseason as most, but I don't see any offensive linemen on the list of targets.

....And they failed to mention Washingtons QB's were....

Then they mentioned 4 teams who don't go after high prized FA and are consistant winners. NE, Indy, Philly, Pit. Well they are consistant winners because they have the QB's, the most important position in football. And they forgot NE signed Adalius Thomas to huge FA contract a couple years ago.

I like the Peppers signing. Need a very good oline FA though.

You could argue that the Vikings picked up a pretty big fish last season off the market and it made them an NFC Championship contender.

The Vikings were already defending division champions.

But not serious contenders for a Super Bowl. The point is, they got better after the signing.

Philly also signed TO and did they get that tackle from the Bills in a trade or FA? Those were both pretty high priced FA acquisitions.

It doesn't work for the Redskins because they do this every year trying to fill every hole with the latest FA. FAs are typically older and have less shelf life than someone you draft due to the experience you have to have to be an unrestracted FA. I don't necessarily think the Bears are changing their talent acquisition strategy to signing big named FAs every year. I think due to the Cutler and Adams trades, they are in a situation where they have obvious holes to fill, an uncapped year coming up, an aging defensive core that needs to win now, no draft picks until the 3rd round, and the HC and GM's jobs likely on the line. So in this situation it makes absolute sense to throw a crapload of money at the biggest FAs of need.

If the Bears go 11-5 next year and make a run in the playoffs, I highly doubt they are going into the off season trying to make a run at the biggest FAs again. This is a one time thing. If it fails, Lovie and likely Angelo are gone. If it works, its back to the draft strategy, although it's possible Angelo might revise his previous strategy and incorporate a possible FA here and there into the mix. And by that I mean bigger names than Frank Omiyale or Marty Booker, but smaller names than Julius Peppers.

Isn't Asante Samuel a pretty big name in FA? I feel like TO was traded to the Eagles though.

Those teams typically don't go after FAs because their GMs can draft. Ours for the most part can't so what are we supposed to do? Besides, you could count the Bears in the list of teams that typically didn't go after FAs before this year, and they certainly haven't been world beaters, and there are teams that do go after FAs occasionally and are good most of the time.

The bottom line is, I am not huge on FAs, and I would much rather build through the draft. But in our situation, it's a no brainer that we fill some holes with FA. Hell our "2nd round pick" died this offseason.

Looking back at the past 3 years, it looks to me like the Redskins have been most active on the defensive side of the ball, signing Fletcher, Smoot, Haynesworth.

They've been a top 10 defense for the past 3 years. They were terrible in '06 as a defense, ranking 31st. So it makes sense to me that they went after defensive targets. I'm sure the FA signings weren't the only factor, but it seems to have contributed to improving the defense.

They haven't been good offensively in forever, and other than signing Randle El (who I would argue isn't all that big a signing), they haven't really targeted big offensive FA's -- at least, not at the skill positions.

Here's a site that lists their recent aquisitions: http://www.redskins.com/gen/articles/Free_Agency__Redskins_Usually_Aggressive_5464.jsp

There's defnitely danger in going the FA route. It's obvious the current Bears regime is desperate for quick improvements to be made. I'm not all that comfortable saddling the next coach/GM with expensive, underperforming players either.

But I also think that just dismissing it as something that could never, ever help is wrong.
