would the chargers take forte for cromartie?

sign chester taylor and draft a rb next year.

I don't think he'd be a good fit for this defense. He's better at man coverage and can't tackle anyone. Corners need to be able to hit in Lovie's D.

(insert joke about how the Bears can't tackle anyone either)

good point, but i still think that if you're good at man coverage, there's no reason you won't be effective in zone. as far as not being able to tackle anyone, that can be coached if it has to be. plus, he's fast so he's got closing speed, also highly valued in lovie's defense. he's an instant upgrade over bowman.

if we trade forte, it's also easier to sell potential FA Rb's, who will think that they'll be the featured back, even though i see kevin jones's role increasing in martz's offense.

There's no reason you would be effective. It's two very different ways of playing defense in the secondary.

i'd argue that it's much harder to go from zone to man rather than man to zone. cromartie has closing speed and size, two qualities that lovie looks for on defense.

Schefter was just saying the Bears are in desperation mode to sign Peppers.

Peppers and Marshall would be huge.

I'd still to see them get a S like Clark or Sharper. I really want to see an upgrade at S, the play there has been killing them.

But yeah it would be hard to complain if they landed 2 players like that. There has been zero links to any OL however, which is troubling. Unless I missed something.

And I would probably be prepared to be disappointed if you're expecting a stud OL to come in. There just aren't many out there. Colon was just given a first round tender by the Steelers and Mankins will probably get a 1st and a 3rd.

The rest of the linemen seem to be restricted FAs or old.

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com is reporting that the Panthers made at least three attempts to get a deal done with Peppers, and that the final offer was a long-term deal worth somewhere close to $14 million a year.

yeah, but we can't ignore the line, either.

Ignore it? No.

But from what I understand, there isn't that slam-dunk guy the Bears could sign to make it all better.

On the other hand, Peppers would be huge, and Marshall as well, and they should be available (albeit -- expensive in terms of either money or trade value).

So I'm assuming the Bears are concentrating on what they feel they can make big strides in, given that the draft just isn't going to do it for them this year.

If they did acquire Peppers I also assume they'd go OG with one of their earlier picks. Should be able to pick up a decent OG around the 3rd.

Exactly. If you can shore up the DE and FS positions, which may be the easiest of the Bears needs to fill based on who's available, then you can focus on OL in the draft.

You can probably get one of the top 3 OGs at the 74th pick. If they get the 2nd for Olsen, they can get a top 2 OG or a pretty good OT still.

I'm not a big believer in the whole, making everybody around him better thing. But Peppers is the kind of huge name that could give the Bears D its swagger back. Urlacher, Briggs, and Harris are going to see that they are getting that help on D and I have to believe it will motivate them to get back to playing at an elite level. I would maybe do something like 5/$70Mil with 30 guaranteed and look to make a 2-year run with him and the rest of the boys. Peppers improving the pass rush makes the DBs better and hopefully frees up Harris to get more 1-on-1s.

broncos just used first round tender on marshall.

The Broncos can still trade his rights for less than that.

Also, Orton got a first round tender, and Scheffler got a 2nd round tender.

I'd be fine with Peppers, but I hate the idea of them being desperate to sign him. I guess if there's no cap, fine, but they've got more pressing needs.

If the Bears sign Peppers to a big contract, how will that affect the salary cap when one finally gets resolved?

Isn't age 30 the year that DEs really begin to get old? How many DEs over 30 have put up double digit sacks?

Only 13 players had 10 or more sacks last year. Of them Andre Carter and Aaron Schobel were at least 30. Julius Peppers and Dwight Freeney both turned 30 within 2 weeks of playing their last game this year.

Joey Porter, John Abraham, and Darren Howard did it in 2008.

Kearney, Vrabel, and Jason Taylor did it in 2007.

There really aren't that many guys putting up double digit sacks anymore at any age.

Had to figure this denial was coming...

Olsen NOT on the trade block.

The Bears are not actively shopping Olsen, although that could change if another club makes an overwhelming offer.

The source tells me that Martz is still trying to get a handle on the Bears offensive players, and he hasn't had time to get his arms around how he will utilize them.

If the Bears sign Peppers

That depends entirely on what kind of contract they sign him to. Presumably, if they give him a signing bonus that would cause the cap hit to be spread out over every season. However, if they put most of the money into his 2010 salary, that might make it easier, although I'm not sure if they have rules around it. It's hard to say exactly how it would affect the cap, but I'd have to assume it will affect it significantly if/when the CBA is announced.

There is a rule that a player can't take more than like a 48% pay cut in successive years of a multi-year contract, or somethign like that. So, they couldn't pay him 20Mil in 2010 and 1Mil in 2011.

So Boldin is available for a mere 3rd rounder. Should they?

I'd say no, unless they can make another couple deals where they get a couple picks in the top 80 at least. Boldin is 30, an injury risk, and may not be able to perform outside of a high powered passing game. Of course, if all goes as planned, that's exactly what the Bears O will be.

Posted
My feeling is that of their position groups, at least WR has talent that can develop into quality players. The OL does not and needs to be addressed early and often, so losing a 3rd rounder on somebody with Boldin's question marks would just be too much. Perhaps if they found a way to swing other deals, but it wouldn't be a priority.

could we agree to send them olsen instead?

hoomanwanui from illinois is an excellent blocking TE and shou;d be available in the 6th or 7th round, possibly even as a FA. we should consider bringing him in, he did 25 reps, is samoan, and has a gigantic ass.
