I thought the reward wasn't nearly worth the risk of that 4th down call. Giving Peyton Manning 30 yards to a win vs 70 or so yds to a win isn't worth it there. Converting the 4th down doesn't win you the game there. So why not punt?

Converting the 4th down does actually pretty much win the Patriots the game. If they convert, they can run it into the line for 3 plays in a row and then punt it back to the Colts with less than 30 seconds left on the clock and also make the Colts use their final timeout in the process. That effectively ends the game because NFL teams just aren't dumb enough to allow what needs to happen to drive 70 yards in 25 seconds with no timeouts.

And remember, the Colts had just come off a 79 yard drive that took less than 2 minutes to complete.

The Patriots probably make the first down between 55-65 percent of the time on that play. They probably have a 10-15 percent chance of stopping the Colts from scoring from the 30. They have another 2-3 percent chance of kicking the game winning field goal after the Colts have scored too quickly.

In order to make the punt the right decision, they would need to stop the Colts from scoring at least 70-80 percent of the time after the punt. And there's no way they're stopping Peyton that often in that situation.

uhh they would have won if they got the first down

They could not have taken knees to win there.

the game would have still been over

The Colts only had one timeout. The game was over if the Pats converted.

On October 19, Denver was 6-0 and held a 3 1/2 game lead over 2-3 San Diego.

Four weeks later, both tams are 6-3. Denver has the tiebreaker right now and they play next week in Denver but the Broncos are heading in the wrong direction quickly.

Especially if Orton is out for awhile. Simms didn't look good.

has simms ever looked good? (aside from games against baylor or utep)

He had a good half season in Tampa. But anyways I wasn't saying he ever looked good. Was just saying Denver is screwed if Simms has to play for a week or two.

It's funny because I'm the guy who always yells at the TV screen "don't punt! He'll come back down and score on you!"

Then Belichek actually does what I always scream about and they lose anyway.

DOH! :banghead:

The more I've thought about Belichick's decision last night, the more I like it. I don't know that I'd say I liked the move, but I certainly don't think it was a terrible decision.

It's not so much going for it on fourth down, that I liked. It's more the position on the field. From your own 30 yard line, you're basically guaranteeing a win for the Colts if you don't get it. Punting it there at least gives your defense a chance to stop them.

This is a very conflicting set of sentences.

You like, you don't like, it's not bad you are giving the game away.

I'm very conflicted about the decision. Part of me wants to love it, part of me thinks it was too risky.

I'm becoming more and more convinced it was the right call, though.

Check out this calculator. Make sure you choose D every time.

That guy is really stupid. For one he calculates the results and hey going for it was the better choice. Then he says football is played on the field as if saying playing the percentages is stupid. Umm yeah you go ahead and do what makes you more likely to lose and I'll go with what's more likely to win. Plus going for it is saying my offense can beat your defense i.e. he was deciding the game on the field.

On the call: I can tell you, en masse, Colts fans wanted the Pats to punt. I cheered when the Colts got the third down stop. Then, with the time out, I started to get extremely nervous that the Pats were going to go for it. I was really hoping they were just trying to draw the Colts offsides. If Colts' fans' reactions are any indication, going for it was the right call. You've got freaking Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker; wouldn't you rather win (or lose) with those guys than your depleted defense? I always wanted Coach Dungy to play by those rules.

On the game, I was exceedingly frustrated with the gameplan/playcalling. I know the conventional wisdom says the Colts can't run. I know they've struggled some -- and I know they did end up scoring 35 points and winning -- but last night was a game to run. The Patriots defensive line was rather decimated, they were missing both Jarvis Green and Ty Warren (not to mention the traded Richard Seymour). Further, these Patriots deserve some Colt-treatment: limit their possessions as much as possible. The Colts ran the ball at a 5.1 yards per rush clip, over a yard better than the Pats (4.0). However, the Pats ran it 10 times more. This is something that must be rectified if the teams meet again (I hope they don't).

While the Colts' run-blocking is mediocre at best, they are averaging a decent 3.9 yards per carry and have a total of nine rushing touchdowns on the year. The Colts will always be pass-first with Manning -- as they absolutely should be. The Colts use athletic offensive linemen to reduce/prevent sacks, and therefore lack maulers or road-graders for the run. However, the running problem this year (last year it was truly abysmal) has been more lack of persistence, rather than outright inability.

I was happy to see what the Titans did today. The game was much closer than the final score indicated thanks to a pair of pick-6s in the final 2:30 (it's so nice to have Vincent Fuller back), but the Titans had decent control of the game most of the way.

Another good game for Vince where he made mostly good decisions and a few nice throws (a deep out to Nate and a fly to, I believe, Britt in particular) has me feeling very good about his development. Chris Johnson is ridiculously good as well. I was silly to dislike that pick.

It seems silly, but I'm starting to wonder if 10-6 is possible at this point. Just 7 more straight wins . . .

The Titans are starting to look rather salty.

I had a feeling they would at least be competitive at some point. Their horrible start just didn't seem like it would stick all year long.

The defense has improved significantly. That's helped Vince to play well and he certainly has.

they're still not very good...they've beaten some pretty bad teams.

The defense couldn't slow down bad teams in the first 6 weeks. We know the talent is there, so the fact that the talent is playing better is a good sign.
