We are virtually to the point where we just really need to keep Milton [expletive] Bradley. Based upon the potential FA upgrades over Milton at this point. The projected/assumed trades of him make neither financial sense nor do they make sense to make the Cubs a better team. Considering we have spent no money this offseason, sans Mr. Grabow, and the fact that we are going to have to eat a major portion of Milton's contract when/if we trade him. Just put that money toward a major PR/Marketing campaign in an effort to keep Milton in Chicago. He had a .775 OPS last year in an extremely "down" year and I will personally guarantee right now that his "down" year in Chicago out produces whatever [expletive] the Cubs throw out in RF/CF (depending where Kosuke ends up) that replaces him.

I think we can now conclude that the Cubs have drawn a line in the sand as far as how much of Bradley's remaining salary they will eat, and so far no team has been willing to take on the rest.

It should be interesting to see who blinks first, and perhaps what the Cubs' move will be if February rolls around and nothing has happened. They've said they won't release them, and they seem dead set on having him off of the roster by the time the team reports to camp.

Of course the Cubs will cave if he's still around in February. They've gone out of their way to make it very clear that they have absolutely no intentions of keeping Milton Bradley on this team in 2010. There is no incentive for any potential trade partner to do anything now unless they believe someone else is competing for Bradley. Without that, why not just sit around and wait for spring training to keep getting closer and closer with the Cubs becoming more and more desperate to rid themselves of Bradley before all other FA replacement options are gone?

That's where my mind is at.

But, a few posts before yours, someone said that Seattle might be interested again. I haven't looked, but how bad was Bedard last year? Is he over his injury troubles? Now that they have Cliff Lee along with King Felix, maybe Bedard helps free up some money for them to go after Bay again. We know it won't be Silva unless Hendry is truly feeling career suicidal.

Bedard is a free agent. Their two most expensive players are Carlos Silva ($12,000,000!) and Jack Wilson. Neither of those guys make the 2010 Cubs any better.

Well, nevermind then. I could have sworn Bedard signed some ridiculously large contract after he got traded from Baltimore.

The Chicago Cubs may be close to moving Milton Bradley, however the long-awaited trade to the Tamp Bay Rays might not be the way the Bradley era ends in Chicago.

At least two other teams, including the Seattle Mariners, are in negotiations with the Cubs for Bradley.

After moving Bradley, the Cubs' next move will be to go after a centerfielder and an arm for the bullpen. Recently released Matt Capp, formerly of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is on Cubs general manager Jim Hendry's short list of setup men. A center fielder will be chosen among former White Sox Scott Podsednik, Marlon Byrd, and Rick Ankiel. Podsednik is the only everyday player on that short list who can leadoff as well as play the outfield. Defensively, Byrd and Ankiel have more skills in center field than Podsednik.

The Cubs are hoping a deal can be made for Bradley in the next five to seven days. The baseball hot stove has heated up since the winter meeting in Indianapolis ended last Thursday. It appears teams now want to get their rosters solidified before the new year.

The Mariners have had perhaps the busiest offseason in baseball so far, but they're not about to slow down. Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that they're re-engaged in trade talks with the Cubs about outfielder Milton Bradley.

That'd be awesome if we traded Bradley and then basically replaced him with Scotty Pods. That'll make our team better.

Why do these jackasses seem to think that whoever ends up in CF needs hit at the top of the order? Cameron certainly wouldn't have if they had signed him. I would have no issue with Fuku and either Riot or whoever ends up at 2B hitting at the top with the new CF being in like the 6 or 7 hole. Idiots.

I have tons of issues with batting Theriot in the top 2 slots.

I can see it now, Opening Day lineup:

Podsednik CF

Kosuke RF

Lee 1B

Ramirez 3B

Soriano LF

Soto C

Baker 2B

Theriot SS

Zambrano P- with Silva pitching the 3rd game of the series.

My disgust with Hendry is growing every day.

Carlos Silva is the man mentioned BTW.

That would just be monumentally stupid unless Seattle is picking up a chunk of the money he's owed, and you just know that's not happening. Trading 2 yrs/$21M and a productive player for 2yrs/$24M and a guy who didn't pitch last year seems like a great idea to me.

It's not ideal but it's better than Pods being the every day CF and hitting there. I guess I worded that poorly. It's the better of the not so great options available.

I don't believe we'd trade Bradley for Silva. I'm chalking that one up to one of the other 100 other rumors with no basis.

I agree, of Hendry did this then why not pick up Wells from Toronto? at least he's useful.

Do you want to take that back or are you sticking by your statement:

Cubs & Mariners Talking Bradley Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 18, 2009 at 10:26am CST]

The Mariners have had perhaps the busiest offseason in baseball so far, but they're not about to slow down. Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that they're once again talking with the Cubs about outfielder Milton Bradley. Three executives say the Cubs could send Bradley to Seattle in exchange for Carlos Silva, who will earn slightly more than Bradley over the course of the next two seasons (Bradley's under contract for $21MM, Silva for $24MM).

The Rangers are "not likely" to acquire Bradley and Heyman says the Rays appear to have given up on trading for him. One Giants person says there's "no way" the team trades for the 31-year-old.

The Mariners are looking at several possible solutions in left field, not just Bradley. They may consider Johnny Damon, though they're not currently involved with Matt Holliday and Jason Bay.

Haha. "trade expected in the next 5 to 7 days". What a great christmas present for all the Cub fans around the world. Carlos Silva and Scott Podsednik.

That would be too horrible. And we can rag on Hendry all we want but trades are his forte. I don't believe he'd make a trade that stupid. If it was a free agent, that's another story.

As much as i like the guy, Bruce Levine has really annoyed me this offseason. He continues to defense Hendry and acts as if this mess isn't hendry's fault. And then you have him updating ESPN 1000 every so often by saying he expects a bradley trade within the next few days.
