Isn't Cleveland able to offer LeBron more money than another team per some Stern pet rule that basically encourages guys to stay with their teams? I'm not certain of this but I think I've heard it before.

I don't understand what you're saying here.

Are you saying they're allowed to offer him whatever they want regardless of a cap? Because otherwise there's nothing stopping them from offering more than any other team so long as it fits into what they can afford or it keeps them under a cap (if they so wish to be).

they can, kind of, they're called bird rights. but i think bird rights are generally more useful if a team is over the cap and trying to sign one of their free agents. as far as i can tell, lebron will make no more in cleveland in 2010 than he would anywhere else. they CAN offer something like a 2.5% raise over what other teams can and they can also offer a 6th year. however, i have learned that lebron's new team will have bird rights to lebron after 3 years, meaning that they can offer him the same raise that the cavs can, giving the cavs only a 2.5% advantage in years 2 and 3 of the contract.

bird rights don't really affect this situation.

Yeah I knew there was some sort of rule like that, but wasn't sure what the circumstances around it were. Thanks for the clarification.

Wade is free after this year if he opts out. He has a fourth year player option after this season. My guess is that he does not opt out after this season and becomes a FA after next year. I'm basing that mostly on the idea that he might want to test the FA market when it isn't as relatively crowded as it will be this summer.

Why would a guy who's getting a max deal no matter what care about how crowded the free agent market is? It would be dumb for him to throw away guaranteed 9 figures of cash and play out 1 more year.

I just don't think you can underestimate ego in all of this. If he wins with NY, that's all him. That's his team, his championship, his legacy, his city. Again, same thing in Cleveland, but again, it's also just Cleveland.

I agree with this statement. I lived in NY when the Knicks were decent, when the Yankees were winning championships, when the Giants won, and there is no place like it. Chicago probably has better and more loyal fans, but New York is New York. No egomaniac like LeBron would pass up the opportunity to rule NY if he could. Sorry Cleveland. And sorry Chicago.

So my guess is that there's a good chance LeBron ends up in NY. He loves the bright lights. He's going to love hanging with JayZ and getting high fives from Spike Lee courtside. He's even a Yankee fan.

The only question is whether he can win rings in NY. Because if he doesn't even win a championship, his legacy is tainted forever.

While I do agree, somewhat, that if LBJ wins in NY he would control the city, but if he wins in a smaller market like Cleveland, he would control the whole state. In NY he would never control the state. So I think this point is overstated.

LBJ isn't going to sign with NY blindly. They will still have to show LBJ that they have the potential to get better and the potential to win. IMO they will have to land another top player before they can convince LBJ they are commited to winning. And this is the vicious cycle. No player will sign with NY unless LBJ signes, and nod LBJ will not signed unless he sees the team becoming a contender. In fact, it would not surprise me if NY gets burned like Chicago did in 2000. If LBJ ends up in the NY area, it will be the Nets, for which Jay Z is a part owner. I just don't see LBJ in NY.

Is it safe to say that if LeBron wins it all in Cleveland this year, that he's more likely to go to NYC? If the "winning a ring" monkey is off his back, wouldn't that give him more freedom to just play where he wants to hang out?

I think almost anyone would rather "control" New York City than control the state of Ohio.

I SAID, THEY'RE GETTING AN IKEA SOON.

I hear LeBron sleeps on a modified Ibestad, so that could be enough to get him to stick around.

I really think it's going to depend on what Cleveland does to keep him personally. If they go and find a way to trade for Stoudemire before the deadline, I don't think LeBron would leave that situation, championship won already or not. And I think Cleveland knows that adding a big piece to their current team will make it harder for him to walk away from too.

If I'm putting percentages out there, I'd say it's 60/40 Cleveland to New York. I really don't think anyone else has a shot.

I don't see the appeal of NY, I really don't. I still believe the Knicks will have to land another star, ie Bosh, Stats, Wade, before they can convince LBJ to come to NY. So I believe LBJ will either stay in Cleveland (most likely) or spurned the Knicks and go for the Nets.

I can see how the Nets would be appealing to LBJ. Jay-Z is part owner and I think they have a better core group of players than the Knicks. And aren't they moving to Brooklyn? He could be the face of a "new" franchise and be able to blaze his own trail while still in NYC.

Have you ever been to NYC?

No, and I don't ever plan too.

How ignorant then.

My father has never been to NYC, and I know he never will. Not something that would appeal to him. Over 10 million people, traffic, loud, etc... I am assuming there are many others who feel the same as he and Redflash about NYC, who have no desire to go there, who see no appeal in going. I sincerely doubt however, the LBJ is one of those people.

Ignorant? No. Misguided? Maybe. People severely overrate New York and it'a atmosphere. Besides, I didn't based NY, that would be ignorant, all I said was I didn't see the appeal.

Ignorant was the proper term there. Uninformed, lacking in knowledge or training.

Holy crap. You just said you've never been there. How can you possible have an opinion about this?

I said that I might be misguided, but I don't need to be there to understand that I don't ever want to go to NY. Again, is that misguided....sure, but ignorant? Nah. If I said NY was a POS city that is rule by rats infested people, then I would be ignorant. Again, from other people experience (I have had friends go to NY) watching shows like New Year's Eve, etc, etc, I simply have choosen I do not want to go to NY (mainly because of finances), or see the appeal of the city.

This topic shouldn't be about if I am ignorant or misguided, it should be about the Chicago Bulls, so can we get back on topic.

I see Anthony Morrow is replacing Derrick Rose in the Rookie/Sophomore game.
