MSU only has 7 home games this year, and CMU is probably almost as good as ND.

I have believed for awhile that as long as the NCAA is going to endorse this Faux National Championship thing, they need to take more control of scheduling and officiating for non-conference games. I would suggest that until just recently PSU, UM and MSU have played fairly competitive non con schedules, they may have seen the writing on the wall of some other major powers from the south and changed their ways

My mistake on 7 home games, for some reason I totally blanked that you came to South Bend this year (and I was there so that was especially dumb).

CMU is not almost as good as ND. They're a really good MAC team, but the MAC really, really sucks.

LeFevour would have himself a day against ND's defense. I hate using the transitive property but it's really the only way you can judge some teams in college football. CMU beat MSU and MSU lost to ND by a whole 3 points.

I think ND would beat Central Mich, but it'd be like every other Notre Dame game with the exception of Nevada.

Jackson State and Wofford (or whatever - I don't think either of these schools even exists).

Not sure if you were serious, but they do, in fact, exist. They're both 1-AA teams.

Jackson State is probably best known as Walter Payton's alma mater.

And they're not 1-AA teams. They're Football Championship Subdivision teams. [-X

There is no use for the transitive property. None. USC lost to Washington, who lost to Notre Dame. Is there any way that's going to lead anyone with intelligence to pick us to beat USC? Michigan lost to Michigan State, who lost to...Notre Dame. Who Michigan beat.

The transitive property is almost 100 percent junk. You can't assume that the MSU that showed up to play CMU also showed up to play Notre Dame. You can't assume that the CMU that showed up to play MSU would be the same team to show up to play Notre Dame. You can't assume that the same Notre Dame team that showed up to play MSU would play the same way against Central Michigan.

I don't think ND would blow out CMU either, but that's because with our defense we're probably not blowing too many teams out and CMU has a good offense. (CMU has a garbage defense that we'd probably score 42+ on, but whatever.) That doesn't mean that CMU is on the same level, and it doesn't have anything to do with the transitive property.

I refuse to use that term. I saw no reason to change it from 1-AA. [-(

Wow, I can't even begin to tell you guys how messed up the situation at FSU is right now. Changes will be announced later this week (mid-season changes), with others to follow at the end of the year. Including Bowden stepping down, or getting fired/not renewed if he doesn't want to go gracefully.

Boosters are slinging mud, Bobby's family is slinging mud, the Board of Trustees is overstepping the President of FSU, etc.

Crazy.

It's getting even uglier. Bobby was offered a nice "going-away" package in the $5MM range and including staying for 1 more year (so his last game would be a home game), but Jimbo gets final say over everything including coaches (where he would remove the entire staff on the D side of the ball). The major sticking point is that Andrews wants to retire, and Bowden wants Amato as the DC - when Fisher can't stand Amato, going as far as talking Andrews into coming back this year so that Amato wouldn't be the DC.

Bobby said "Nope." Now both sides are hunkering down for battle, knowing that Bobby gets a $1MM check when he leaves, and his contract runs out at the end of this year. FSU and the BoT are leaning towards letting him walk away without any second thought.

This is not really true. There's a use for it, but you have to look at all transitive paths, not just one or two. or even three or four.

The question is why are they restricting themselves to Jimbo Fisher? Maybe he could thrive without Bowden (I sort of doubt it) but if Weis survives this year, FSU is easily the best job on the market. With Meyer at Florida and Miami plus USF looking strong getting the right coach is critical. One bad hire and you're looking at potentially a decade or longer of mediocrity.

interesting factoid that the best Wide Receiver ever and maybe the best Running Back ever came out of tiny black colleges in Mississippi. Payton came out of Jackson State and Jerry Rice out of Mississippi Valley State. Also, Steve McNair came out of another MS black college: Alcorn University.

I question the Fisher move, too.

If FSU weren't married to Fisher, who do you think they should pursue?

I'm not worried about Fisher. While they are proven commodities out there (Brian Kelly, Gary Patterson, etc.), I feel as though we're in good hands. Fisher is an excellent recruiter, a great evaluator of talent, and willing to compile a staff of people who are smarter and more talented than he is (a key). In short, he reminds me of Bobby Bowden in the 80's. And I feel that he's willing to stick around for the long haul at a low price tag (relatively).

Some of the names that have been floated for his staff are intruiging, to say the least. From the looks of things, there will be a young, high-energy, aggressive staff on board that has great experience and solid connections within the southeast high schools.

Brian Kelly seems to have everything you'd want. Youth, head coaching experience (D2 titles and BCS conference championships), innovative schemes, etc. I think he's definitely the top current college head coach looking to move to mega program. Chris Peterson is up there as well.

I just read on wiki that Fisher is owed $5 million if he's not the head coach by 2011 though. That's pretty brutal if you don't think he's going to be your man. If that's the case then hiring a coach that's going to command a huge salary might not be in the cards (like Gruden or something) and you're probably looking at a young coordinator to step in for less money.

I desperately want Brian Kelly if Weis is done after this year.

I've heard from ND friends that (idiot) Irish fans don't regard Kelly as enough of a name to warrant hiring. According to them it's a stratospheric hire like Shanahan or Stoops or nothing at all. I felt annoyed for my reasonable Domer friends.

Oh, I'd love a guy like Stoops. But Stoops ain't leaving OU, ever. Kelly's Catholic, a family guy, and pretty clearly a very good football coach. He'd be perfect.

Illinois commit C.J. Fiedorowicz, a 4-star TE is visiting Iowa this weekend for the Michigan game. He's also visiting Wisconsin next week for the Iowa game.

Rivals has him ranked as the 5th best TE and 110 overall. Tom Lemming has him as the top TE in the country.

Doesn't mean he's de-committed but probably not a great sign. Both Iowa and Wisconsin utilize their TE's much, much more than Illinois. If it's just a football decision they're both probably better bets. Iowa's last 6 starting TE's have all been drafted and Wisconsin has had a lot of success with them also.

On the other hand Illinois is closer to home and he said the big reason for committing was the coaching staff.

yesterday penn st got a commitment from khairi fortt, one of the top LBs in the country. apparently he liked georgia a lot but during his recruiting visit there, the players who were supposed to be chaperoning him ditched him, one of those times in the middle of the night. thanks georgia.

rivals has our class ranked #5 right now and scout has us at #2. it'd be nice if we can get a DT from philly (sharrif floyd) to round out the class, but he's one of the top 10 recruits in the country and has every big-time school after him, so that will be tough.

I've seen his play in high school and he is an absolute monster.
