Holliday wants to stay with Cards long term

Holliday Interested In Extension With Cardinals

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 27 at 11:37am CST]

Matt Holliday's first month as a Cardinal could hardly have gone any better. The team's 20 games over .500 and 9.0 games ahead of the Cubs in the NL Central, largely because of Holliday's hot hitting. He has a .386/.448/.667 line with six homers in his first month back in the National League. Today, Holliday said on the Team 1380 in St. Louis that he hopes his stay in a Cards uniform lasts more than a couple months (You can listen in here).

"That would be really exciting for me to get a chance to be here and play next to Albert [Pujols] along with the rest of these guys and to do some special things over the next however many years," Holliday said. "Hopefully this will be a long-term relationship."

He hasn't begun negotiating an extension with the team, but says there's a chance he signs one before the season's over.

"Hopefully there'll be some progress and hopefully I'll be able to stick around here for a long time."

Holliday, who will turn 30 this offseason, makes $13.5MM this year. His improved offensive stats and strong outfield defense will likely make him one of most highly coveted free agents after the season if he doesn't sign an extension first.

Well thats just great. Your move Hendry or

So what? Holliday can take Pujols, Carpenter, Lugo, LaRussa and Al Hrabosky and collectively shove them up his ass for all I care.

I maintain with the proper off season moves the Cubs will be better than the Cardinals regardless of what the Cardinals do.

And what historical evidence leads you to this conclusion?

Not any but, its my hope the new ownership is going to dump Hendry and find a GM who knows something about building a good baseball team. When you look at the Cubs core of Lee, Ramirez, Soto, Fukudome, Bradley, in the hands of a good GM, there's a potentially really good baseball team.

Well, I hope you're right, but we've got 101 years going against us...not to mention the fact, that other than the Yankees, the Cardinals have won more championships than any other team in major league baseball history.

If I were a betting man, I wouldn't be laying my money out on the Cubs.

Holliday is 30 next year, a Boras client, and currently playing way, way above his true talent level in his contract year. Bringing him back(again, Boras client who's been with the team for a month) will be much like similar Cubs moves of recent past. He'll keep them from dropping off in the short term, but hamstring them long-term.

ugh...just admit you're a cards fan and you'll be treated better.

As for the ridiculous argument, please explain how what happened in the '60's has any bearing whatsoever on what is happening today.

lol...no, I'm not a Cards fan. I've just been disappointed too much by this franchise. I'll stay with them until death, but I sure am losing any faith. Last year was really hard for me.

I just took down my Cubs stuff at work, and am putting up Bears.

It's that damned goat's fault. It keeps casting its supernatural magic from Goat Hell, eternally embittered and angry at the Cubs for not allowing it entrance to Wrigley.

I wonder if the goat and Jack Buck are buddies. Maybe the goat lets Jack cast some supernatural magic at the Cubs sometimes, and in turn the goat gets to yell, "Go crazy, folks!"

Then they both laugh and laugh, and Josh Hancock gets drunk.

If Holliday's market value is 15-18 million per year let's say he signs for a discount at 14 million per. Anything he signs will likely be at least a four year deal and likely quite a bit longer. That means come 2012 when Pujols is likely be a free agent again the Cardinals either let him walk or sign him and have around 40 million a year invested in just two players (assuming Pujols gets around 25-30 mil a year). That would be half the Cards payroll. Its going to be hard to field a good enough team to compete with just 40-50 million for everyone else. The Cardinals aren't going to let Pujols go which means they either raise payroll or be unable to sign other big name hitters.
