What I hate is that the Cardinals' top recent acquisition wants to stay in St Louis for the long haul, while the Cubs' top recent acquisition is doing everything in his power to get traded before the first year of his contract is done. Is there that much of a difference between the two cities and fan bases?

Why, because he said this? What's he supposed to do come out and say, "Man I hate it here. Ryan and Ludwick keep trying to get me to join the clan. Larussa wants me to drvie him around town when he's drunk. Pujols stares at me from across the lockeroom saying plaease don't leave you're actually a big leaguer?" He has to say this crap. Money talks. In the end if the Yankees and Red Sox decide that they want or need him they will bid him up to where the Cards probably can't afford him without really hurting themselves going forward.

As far as the Cities there's no comparison but, didn't you know the Cardinals' fan base is the best in the history of sports fan bases?

If Holliday's market value is 15-18 million per year let's say he signs for a discount at 14 million per. Anything he signs will likely be at least a four year deal and likely quite a bit longer. That means come 2012 when Pujols is likely be a free agent again the Cardinals either let him walk or sign him and have around 40 million a year invested in just two players (assuming Pujols gets around 25-30 mil a year). That would be half the Cards payroll. Its going to be hard to field a good enough team to compete with just 40-50 million for everyone else. The Cardinals aren't going to let Pujols go which means they either raise payroll or be unable to sign other big name hitters.

Bill Dewitt Jr. has said "for the right" player" payroll could be seen as high as $120 million.

It's nearly $100 million now with significant money coming off the books.

The bigger contracts are fairly staggered , and if done right could be offset by expiring contracts. Financially, the Cards are in pretty good shape for the near future.

It's just a matter of if Dewitt was just saying that to make the fanbase feel or good or if he really meant it.

Even if the Cardinals don't raise the payroll, they have the money to keep who they want. The problem comes if someone decides Holliday is worth 5/100 and the Cards are left with much less attractive choices with all their found money.

The big thing is they better save money for Albert. Cause you know Boston and the Yankees will be getting in on that.

Come on man, Pujols will give the Cardinals a hometown discount and play for $1 a year, because he loves the city of St Louis, their fans, and respects the game THAT much.

I really think their biggest worry is going to be keeping Carpenter and Wainwright around when their deals are up. I have no idea when that is, but I'm fairly certain Wainwright is FA eligible after 2010 or 2011 and Carp's deal has to be up around the same time. You can have all the offense you want, but if the other team scores 6 runs a game you're screwed. And I don't think they've got anything worth getting excited about in terms of starters anywhere close to the majors. Of course if Duncan stays, all they need is a couple of guys like Daniel Cabrera and Jeff Weaver to show up and they'll have two cheap Cy Young candidates.

I hope they sign him to a huge contract, just so the fans turn on him when he invariably doesn't hit .400 for the life of the contract.

Oh wait, they'd never turn on him. Best fans in baseball. They loved So Taguchi and Aaron Miles for crap's sake.

Carpenter: 5 years/$63.5M (2007-11), plus 2012 club option

Wainwright: 4 years/$15M (2008-11), plus 2012, 2013 club options

When Carp's contract is up, he will be 36. If they exercise the option, he'll be 37. The chances of him pitching anything like he is now by then are very slim. When that deal is up, the Cards aren't likely to want Carp anymore.

Waino is locked up 'til 2011, thru 2013 with options. Not worried about him for a while.

(Lohse is also locked up until 2012).

As for Daddy Duncan - he seems quite irked about the Cards dumping off his kid, Chris. He may be on his way out of town.

As for our minor league pitching prospects: We only have a few with any upside. The fact that Mitchell Boggs is pitching for us tonight is a good indicator.

Jaime Garcia is coming back from surgery - he might be a contributor.

Shelby Miller is the new kid we just signed. Way to soon to know if he'll live up to the hype (or close to it).

if the cubs were running away with the division i'm sure milton wouldn't want out of here.
