Seriosuly, we all love the Bobby Scales story

I don't!

But he played 658,345 minor league games and worked hard to get here and substitute teaches in the off season. That alone should earn him playing time, right?

Yes, we should give him at least 4 - 5 seasons to get his swing together before we write him off.

It is a great story and I will cheer for Bobby when he is on another team

Fox is one of my favorite players and I've been expecting him to have a breakout season like this. I'd love for him to find a spot on the Cubs, but I've always thought the best outcome would be to try and get a decent return trading him to an AL team.

Hes found a spot on the Cubs. Unfortunatley, Lou gave it to Bobby Scales.

Or they just keep him as a serviceable sorta-supersub and good bat to have off the bench.

Yeah, I didn't have much hope for Fox before this year, but he's shown enough to be given such a job. The fact that he hasn't been traded to an AL team in need of a cheap bat suggests to me there just isn't a market out there for him, so I think I'd rather just keep him in that role.

If we had better options, Id be perfectly content with him in the Cliff Floyd or Daryle Ward role. Unfortunately, we do not. We have Bobby Scales and So Taguchi in line in front of him. For some reason, Lou has decided that Fox should be at the far end of the bench and it doesnt make sense to me, especially considering where we are. I know Scales has worked hard to get here, but hes wont be part of this teams future. Fox on the other hand might, so he should be getting some reps in the outfield.

I don't have much problem with that, either.

I don't think Fox's bat is enough of a sure thing to make up for his nightmarish defense. As a RH hitter, he won't get as many PH opportunities either to mitigate that defense either. I'd like to trade him to the AL, maybe for a bullpen arm, maybe for someone who's a better fit for our bench, or both.

I find it hard to believe we're going to find a better fit for the bench than Fox by trading him.

If he does nothing but shag fly balls in right for the rest of the season and off-season, will he be ready for opening day?

(Only half kidding.)

No.

Jake Fox is a horrific outfielder. I'm all for making him work his ass off out there to see if he can become passable enough that his bat can cover him... but I'd be shocked if he ever manages it.

remember when piniella was like "woe is me, i wish i could find a way to get fox's bat in the lineup." now bobby scales plays LF every game.

Fox has 2 starts over the past 2 weeks. It's weak

most of this team has been bad this year (though a lot of idiots are just pinning it on bradley) and lou has been no exception. i kinda wish he'd just go away.

A guy I teach with played his college ball with a Cub minor league pitcher who was Jake Fox's roommate up to AA. Fox had his old roommate and the guy I teach with up to see him in St. Louis. From the dinner w/Fox on Saturday night:

Oakland and Cleveland both inquired about Fox at the deadline. Fox was told that the Cubs wanted to keep him.

Management is looking at guys for next year that they dont know about yet. Fox is of the opinion that since he isnt playing, they either are going to let him go or, he is going to have a spot on the 25 if nothing changes since he is out of options.

Fox is very grounded and didnt give off "I am a big leaguer and you arent" vibe.

Take it for what it is worth since it is third hand by the time I share it with you.

The only logical reason as to why Lou hasnt been playing Fox, is he already feels like hes done enough to show them he belongs, and they want to see some of the others. Now why one of those others is Bobby freaking Scales, I have no idea, but I quit trying to figure Lou out a long time ago.

My only resoning behind Bobby Scales is that Lous trying to let him prove that we dont need Aaron Miles, which Miles proves all by himself, but still, Andres Blanco is 1st in line for the job of light hitting utility infielder, and has earned it. It could be that as Keener said, Fox has proved himself, and hes trying to let Scales play in hopes that another team notices him. There are worse utility players out there. Were paying 1 $5 million.

However, I think that were at the point where we should be playing guys who could potentially start next year, more Fox, Hoff, and maybe even Colvin. Considering that its more and more likely that we'll have an opening in RF, we should see if any of those guys could potentially start so we dont have to throw another 10 million at someone like Bobby Abreu or Jermaine Dye, who hasnt even been on base since the all star break, as tempting it probably is to Hendry.

Fox went 0-4 last night so obviously Piniella was right to play him once a week.

I wonder if we'll see Scales in CF before the season ends. He has the speed but I haven't seen where he's ever played CF. If he could add that to his resume that would help his cause as a super sub type guy.
