I think the Big Ten is easily better than the ACC and the Big East. The Big 12 and the Pac 10 have better top teams probably, but I don't think they are far and away better than the Big Ten. The SEC is really good, although I might overrate them because of the hype they recieve. I only really follow the Big Ten closely though, so my view on other conferences is worthless.

On the other hand, it really seems like the gap between the FCS and the FBS is getting pretty darned close compared to about 10 years ago.

If Alabama can put some points on the board, they're going to be real scary this year.

Yep. A tri-fecta of Ingram'/Upchurch and Richardson will be tough to stop once they get rolling. If Bama can get Maze, Hanks, Norwood, Bowman, Alexander, or anybody to be a productive WR alongside Julio, this offense will be fine.

I love the fact that McElroy rebounded from a poor start to show he can be a SEC quality starter. The fact he did it against a Bud Foster defense is very impressive.

Don't let the offensive stats fool you, VT has a heckuva defense. Alot of those yards came after Bama's OL started to wear them down. So I doubt we'll see VT defense give up nearly 500 yards of total offense again. But I have to say this....VTech REALLY needs Taylor to improve quickly or offensively they are in trouble, cause Ryan Williams looked quite good.

This was a game that I didn't relax till AFTER the game went final. Thank god for two cupcakes in the next two weeks.

Bama did some good things, but damnit to hell Rolando McClain can't be acting the fool like he did in the game. And Bama's special teams coverage needs to put their heads out of their arses, cause that is unacceptable. Watching McElroy and the OL mature over the course of the game makes me :) , but watching McClain go all crazy made me :banghead: cause that is that is out of his character. Overall good start but damn, I don't like having a BCS bowl game type intensity in the first game.

Go Hokies

EDIT: Also, Duke lost to 1-AA Richmond. This comes after the highest preseason expectations for Duke in at least 10 years. Sweet.

I couldn't watch the game. How good is Richmond? How did Duke look?

I didn't see the game, but Richmond is a 1-AA National Championship contender.

Thanks, this makes me feel better. Any I-AA national championship contender would be a bowl eligible team in I-A.

Woohoo, another mediocre Badgers team. Can't wait for them to play even more annoyingly close games in their cupcake schedule, then look like crap against the dregs of the Big Ten.

What a crazy season, already.

I can't wait to watch, er, follow along with gamecast the Razorbacks tonight. I feel oddly good about them, in spite of their absurd schedule. They should have one of the best offenses in the nation.

They're playing Missouri State right? They should win by 40. I went to school there for awhile and didn't even have the heart to watch a game.

Missed by 2. :(

The Hogs looked pretty sharp on offense. It's kind of funny that Michael Smith only had 4 carries, but they're going to be spreading the carries around a lot. Gotta love Ryan Mallett playing one game for the Razorbacks, and they set a school record in passing yards.

Two weeks from now should be entertaining. Arkansas looks to have an awesome offense and a suspect defense. Georgia looks to have an awesome defense and a suspect offense.

51-0.

If Fresno did this to us, I shudder to think what Boise is going to do on the smurf turf in a month.

To somewhat echo UMFan's earlier post, it was really, REALLY nice to see Notre Dame flat-out clobber a team for once. That hasn't happened since 2006. I don't know how good Nevada is (my guess would be far better than they showed today - after all they do have three 1,000 yard rushers on their team), but really satisfying nonetheless. Michael Floyd is an absolute monster and Jimmy Clausen played just as well as he did in the Hawaii Bowl.

Next week's game at the Big House should be extremely interesting.

does anyone think that the elite teams in i-aa are going to start having trouble getting games against i-a schools? like what's the motivation to play an appalachian state or a richmond? the main reasons that teams play i-aa schools are free win and home game revenue. well, if you're a middle-of-the-road i-a team, or even a pretty good one, you're really rolling the dice with the whole "win" part by playing an app st, and i highly doubt that there's much difference in the crowd to watch app st and, say, illinois st. seems to me the gap is closing between the top i-aa teams and the #20-#70 i-a teams, and since you don't get any credit for beating a i-aa school, might as well just play one that sucks.

Yeah, but it's been like that for a minute.

I don't know, the Big 10 seems pretty weak to me this year. Maybe there's just more weakness across the country.

the big east and ACC are horrid

Is the ACC really horrid? They don't have elite teams, but they don't have extremely weak teams either. They're loded with pretty decent teams...at least they were last year.

virginia begs to differ.

Maybe with Bradford down, ESPN can update their Big Three Heisman Watch to include Snead. We'll see how he does in an hour or so against Memphis.

Oooh, I forgot Ole Miss played today. I've always kind of sided with the whole Jevan Snead is a better pro prospect than Bradford crowd anyway.

is ole miss versus memphis a rivalry game or something? it seems like they play every year.

Not to Ole Miss but they are only separated by about 70 miles. This is the last time they will play for a while as Ole Miss backed out of the two remaining years.

Memphis isn't very good and should get crushed in C-USA play.

I know Im late on this, but are you [expletive] kidding me Illinois? How in the hell can a team have an entire off season to prepare for a game, and then look so [expletive] clueless? Unreal

Haha. Well, I'm mostly going based on last year's results.
