What are the chances that somebody actually claims Blanco on waivers if the Cubs tried to send him down?
A good defensive player who can play multiple positions in the infield, I think it's more likely that someone would claim him than not. Somebody would find a space on the roster for a late-inning defensive replacement who could occasionally start and give a regular a day off.

I wrote about this here, but Jake Fox needs to not only stay on the roster, he needs to play.

I think the three moves that make the most sense are sending down Fuld (Johnson takes his place as 5th OFer) Hart, and Shark. We can go 11 man pen until the break and then they will decide which position player goes.

Most likely. I think he should stay up here. He can't hit worth a lick, but I think fans really underrate the importance of defense in the game. Probably because it's not as conclusively quantifiable. But having a player like him off the bench and for the occasional start is important. I'd DFA Miles and keep Blanco on the roster, but because of the contract situation, Blanco will almost certainly go down when Miles is off the DL.

I asked this in the game thread but nobody answered and it applies here so...

What exactly does Blanco not having any options mean in terms of whether or not he can be sent down?

EDIT: Nevermind. Saw the thread in Cubs Discussions that talked about options.

Wait, Blanco is out of options? I don't ever recall seeing him in a major league game before this year.

He saw time with the Royals from 2004-2006.

Ah, the Royals - that would explain it :)

Send down Hart or Shark and Fuld and give Patton back to COL.

Just go with 11 pitchers until the all-star break and then re-examine if necessary. It's seven games with an off-day in the middle. What's the worst that can happen?

Not sure why people see Blanco as a possibility to be sent down (thru waivers). Isn't he the only back-up SS on the roster right now? I guess Fontenot could play in an emergency, but I can't see Blanco being removed at this point.

I really hope Lou doesn't use Saturday's game as an excuse to stick with 12 pitchers. Ugh.

One thing I'm pretty sure of is that Blanco is staying on the roster, at least until Miles gets back.

If Lou is willing to go with 11 pitchers for the foreseeable future, then I'd like to see them shelve Patton, send Samardzija down, and take your pick of Fuld/Fox/Hoffpauir.

Once Miles comes back, somebody will be released among Miles/Blanco/Baker.

If it weren't for the DH on Sunday, then I would be surprised if they didn't go with 11 pitchers. But because of that, I'm afraid they will stick with 12. We do have an off day on Thursday, though.

A player can be out of options without ever having played a single day in the major leagues.

Even with the DH on Sunday they can still go to 11 pitchers. If they have a short outing by a starter and the bullpen gets taxed, then DL Patton, and call up a fresh arm. The best thing for this team right now is to send down Fuld, Hart, and Shark.

With or without the ASB and the DH, I just don't see these guys going with 11 pitchers. That 7th reliever is like a security blanket for Lou.

Any speculation on WHEN this roster move will be made? I mean, I am happy to keep checking NSBB every 27 seconds . . . ;)

My guess is you won't hear anything until around game time.

Going by what Len said on the tube yesterday it sounds like the 12 pitcher is a Larry security blanket.

If Lou would use guys like Heilman and Marshall for multiple innings like he should be, Marshall especiall;y then we could easily survive with 11 pitchers. Marshall and Heilman as long men, Guz, Marmol, Gregg as the end game and take your pick of Shark, Hart, or Patton as the 6th guy, or perhaps bring us Fossum as a loogy.

The Jeff Baker trade was really unnecessary. There is no reason to have both Andres Blanco and Jeff Baker on the bench. It should be Johnson, Hoffpauir, Hill, Fox, and one of Blanco/Baker/Miles

Baker can actually hit. Blanco can actually field. I have no problem with having another guy on our bench who can actually hit. We need to go to 11 pitchers, the issue is if they're still continuing this Patton idiocy, we'll be effectively workign with 10 pitchers. Dumping Patton one way or another won't hurt the pen at all cause Patton is the 12th guy and he's never used.

Everyone talked about how horrible Fox would be in the outfield and 3rd. While he wont win any gold gloves, hes been able to get by. Could it be that the same would be true as a backup catcher?

Too bad the Cubs didn't try out Fox at 3rd right after ARam went down with an injury. Instead, they decided to wait 1 week before Aram comes back. Dumb.

He's looked more natural over there than Fontenot ever has.
