if aramis holds up during the next couple of weeks...i think fox is gone to an AL team in a package for a reliever

I really hope not. I think Fox is worth more then a "AL reliever." Let him play out the season to raise his value and then move him to the AL in the offseason. Trading Fox for a "reliever" doesn't improve the tean.

Why would we trade him at the peak of his value? My guess will be that Hendry will let every team know we want to trade Fox, play him sporadically for the rest of the year so his numbers dip, constantly send him back to AAA and recall him a week later until he is out of options, and then trade him for a AA relief pitcher next spring.

BINGO!

If it's a very good reliever it does improve the team. The question is, is Fox's value high enough that it would merit more than just a reliever? Or will it get to that point?

That I don't know.

That's the problem. To fair the relievers that I would trade Fox for are not available, and the one that are, simply is not worth Fox. I'm not above trading Fox, but not for a "reliever." I think the Cubs could land nice solid reliever without giving up Fox.

Jake Fox could be the heir apparent to Derrek Lee. I wouldnt be in a hurry to trade him. Heck wait til the offseason and see what you can get for Derrek Lee.

Fox should be able to get his ABs with Aramis coming off injury and Bradley taking an off day every week.

Yeah, I wouldn't just trade him for any reliever. I'm not sure I'd trade him for any reliever.

I just really don't have a good grasp of his value and upside at this point. I wouldn't rule it out for an elite reliever, though.

DLee still can't be traded in the offseason unless he approves it. That doesn't appear likely.

I still want to see more from Fox before I anoint him as Lee's successor, but I do like what I've seen to this point.

Why dont we first try to move Hoffpauir? I know, hes a lefty, but the lefty over righty just because hes a lefty crap is what got is into the trouble we were in earlier. Hoffpauir seems to project to be a Russ Branyan type. He can play 1st and both corner outfield spots, and I know hes old for a rookie, but some team could be interested.

Patton, Fuld, and Samardzija

Patton is rule 5, do you think the Cubs will be willing to offer him back?

I don't think they'll want to and I don't think it's likely, but I could see them doing it.

If we really want to keep Patton that bad, but not in the bigs, cant we just make a deal with the Rockies? I doubt theyd ask for too much in return. Christ, we gave them their ace for Luis freaking Vizcaino.

Marquis has pitched well, but he's not an ace. 117 ERA+, 1.308 WHIP, 51:36 K:BB ratio

He normally pitches better in the first half than the second anyway. In 2007 he put up a 3.67 ERA with a 1.263 WHIP and a 62:41 K:BB ratio in the first half. In the second half, he had a 5.73 ERA with a 1.541 WHIP and a 47:35 K:BB ratio.

By the traditional use of the word, hes no ace and he never will be, but as the looser use of the term, meaning the teams best pitcher, he is, at least this year.

The fact that he's no more than a bench bat makes him more valuable to us in that role than to trade him for what would likely be a marginal reliever or the like.

Fox might project to have some upside as a regular, thus making his return in a trade worth it.

And the problem with the lefty/righty thing is when you go with an inferior player solely because he's left handed. There's not enough evidence at this point to clearly state that Fox is superior as a bench player than Hoff.

I asked this in the game thread but nobody answered and it applies here so...

What exactly does Blanco not having any options mean in terms of whether or not he can be sent down?

EDIT: Nevermind. Saw the thread in Cubs Discussions that talked about options.

What are the chances that somebody actually claims Blanco on waivers if the Cubs tried to send him down?

Wait, Blanco is out of options? I don't ever recall seeing him in a major league game before this year.

A player can be out of options without ever having played a single day in the major leagues.

But they have to be on the 40 man roster in order to be out of options, which means they are more than likely to make the team as a September callup.

Doh. Details smetails. Alright 2011 it is!

The Cubs should be able to get a deal or 2 down without Fox.

Even that is debatable. Each of Aaron Cook, Jason Hammel and Ubaldo Jimenez have similar (or better) numbers to Marquis. Over the rest of the season, I'd definitely take Hammel or Jimenez over Marquis as well.

I wouldn't be pushing for a Fox trade, but I also wouldn't make him untouchable or anything.

Wittenmyer's Twitter:

Rami in the house. Says he's about 80-85 percent strength/game ready. Still awaiting word on roster moves. Fuld, Fox haven't heard.

Fuld being sent to Iowa, Patton to the DL and I missed the third move somehow...

I'm sure that Patton will pitch much better once he is fully healthy. :-)) In all seriousness though, I can't see the Cubs giving up on him at this point.

I'd rather have seen Samardzija down so he could work on starting, as Hart is more useful as a reliever anyway, but no major qualms with the moves.

Plus, Lou may actually have a bullpen where he's not afraid to use anybody.

I think I'd actually like to push for a Fox trade. I wonder if a Fox/Hoffpauier combo would do anything for the Mets.

I think hes on the same DL that the Pirates have Donnie Veal on in which he probably wont be heard from again until at least September.

So it's Hart and Fuld down, Patton to the DL?

Wow, I'm surprised that Hendry did something so logical. I would have actually kept Hart and sent Shark down to log more innings and continue his grooming and maturation towards a starter. However, I'll take these moves gladly over demoting Fox (or even Blanco).

Hart down is the third.

Ty Sir.

I have no significant complaints about any of these decisions. Kudos to Cubs brass for this

Agreed, this is awesome. Although I would have definitely preferred Shark down and Fuld remaining up, this works as well, especially with the DH on Sunday.
