I hope.

i'm trying to figure out what they're going to do with cashner. you can't be a real starter if you throw 4 innings and then come out. my instinct is that they see him as a reliever and are starting him just to get him innings.

That's my assumption. He's going to be 23 years old at the end of this season, and probably won't yet have 100 professional innings. Combined with his 2008 college season he'll have maybe 150 IP over a 2 year period. This team has been obsessed with finding bullpen help for several years, and after going through this extremely disappointing season from the bullpen, I'd have to think they will be looking anywhere they can for help, including Cashner. It's tough enough for guys to make it as major league starters when they've built up plenty of starting experience in college and the minors, but it's got to be even tougher when you have basically no history of throwing 6 innings in the same game.

Id guess hes one of those guys who starts out in the pen and they go from there, IE Adam Wainwright.

wainwright is different - he started all through his minor league career, but the cards shifted him to the bullpen after being called up. cashner is a college reliever. he's regarded as more of a two pitch guy.

i'm fine with him being used in the bullpen. obviously he'd be more valuable if he became a good starter, but if he's only got two good pitches and his stuff is better when used in short spells, that's still useful. the cubs need relief help and if cashner can give them good performance at a cheap price for several years, then that's a first round pick that was spent well.

My guess is that Cashner's history as a reliever is why they're being very cautious with his workload. If his future is in the pen, then he's still getting his regular innings as it stands now. If he's being groomed as a starter, then he gets to extend himself every 5 days without a huge jump in innings that would leave him susceptible to injury.

Carrie Muskat[/url]"]Josh Vitters is moving up. Vitters will join Class A Daytona on Tuesday. He had been playing for Class A Peoria, and was batting .316 with 15 homers and 46 RBIs in 70 games. The third baseman, who was the Cubs' No. 1 pick in 2007, will compete in the All-Star Futures Game for the U.S. team as well.

So how much more advanced is class A Daytona than Peoria? If Vitters does well enough we should see him in AA by this time next year hopefully.

Going from Peoria to Daytona is about the same jump as going from Daytona to Tennessee. It's just the name of the league that throws people off.

Now that they've promoted him, they've sort of committed themselves. If Vitters does well the last 2 months of the season, he'll break camp in AA out of Spring Training. If he struggles at Daytona, he has a chance of going back there but still has a chance of going to Tennessee to start next year (my guess would be Daytona if he struggles because of his top prospect status, but other prospects have moved up anyway in that scenario).

Peoria is scheduled to play the Kane County Cougars next week. Shoot.

Anybody else I should be looking for when I go on July 1st or 2nd?

Peoria still has a strong group of prospects down there. Some position prospects to watch (since I don't know who'll be starting)...

IF Junior Lake

IF Ryan Flaherty

OF Kyler Burke

UT Josh Harrison

C Michael Brenly

They also have a number of intriguing pitchers, such as Alberto Cabrera, Jeff Beliveau, Chris Archer, Justin Bristow, Chris Huseby, and Ryan Buchter.

Thanks! I forgot about Flaherty & Brenly.

Aw man, I was hoping to see Vitters one more time when the Chiefs came back to Peoria. :(

I just moved back to Peoria and was hoping to see them before he was promoted. Damn it.

Actually it's not, going by what I've been told by former players. The biggest jump is going from A(-/+) to AA in terms of talent level.

That's true and why I used the word about to qualify the statement (in large part because some great talent skips low A and goes straight to high A..other great talent goes directly from low A to AA, but it's very rare for anybody to ever skip AA and they tend to play there for a while, which increases the talent level). I was more referring to the fact that despite Peoria and Daytona both technically being Class A teams, it's still definitely a jump up in talent level to go to Daytona, and used that example that isn't perfect to illustrate that.

So who's going to be the full time 3B in Peoria? Harrison? Can Macias play some 3rd?

Macias can though Harrison is the best option and Macias is better in CF. I bet we see some Flaherty at third unless our new guy Fitzgerald can play 3rd. Maybe have Flaherty at 3rd, Lake at SS and Fitzgerald at 2b??

You guys got Derrick Fitzgerald? Nifty. He was doing very well down in Mesa, so it's nice to see him jumped over Boise. Who came up to replace Carpenter?

That seems weird to me. His season has been slow start, extremely hot May, very bad June with one nice weekend at the end. Why not try and see if the guy can establish some sort of consistency? Are they thinking he's like the bored genius in school who struggles because he's not challenged and doesn't try?

This has the signs of overaggressive Cubs promotions. A good half season in FSL means he'll almost certainly start 2010 in AA, and once that happens the pressure to call him up to the bigs will be large.
