His FB last night had more velo than before as he touched 94 several times according to the WGN gun, but that line-out to Fuld was a straight FB that the hitter just got on top of. When it left the bat, I thought it had a chance but had too much top spin.

every closer is going to "ruin your evening" multiple times in a season.

Especially the ones pitching for the opposing team. 8-)

The break definitely helped with getting his velocity back to 93-95. In Florida, he was 89-92. However, if he gets into a predictable count or doesn't locate, he's way too hittable because there is no movement. It's reminiscent of Farnsworth minus 3 or 4 mph.

I notice nobody gave Gregg credit for his outstanding contribution in today's game. Where would we be without his ability to hold a 15-run lead?

The only thing that bothers me about Gregg is who we traded to get him. He's been better than I thought he would be and - in any case - he's a reliever. Rely on them at your own risk.

And he just got a save.

Jose Ceda hasn't pitched yet this season.

Considering Ceda hasn't pitched this year due to shoulder surgery, I'm okay with who we traded to get Gregg.

I said it at the time of the trade, and I mean it now...

I'd rather have six years of cost-controlled Jose Ceda than one of Kevin Gregg... but if he's our closer all year and leaves as a Type A FA we've offered arby too, we came out way ahead.

Yep. If someone who isn't pick protected signs him.

Ceda definitely had and has the potential, but he really seems to be struggling keeping the weight down and that's just going to get harder to do after each year.

Even a sandwich pick and a second rounder has more expected value than Ceda.

He also isn't a muscle-bound, punch-throwing, testosterone junky who slags random sluts at the bar. With this in mind, his value is diminished because the only jokes I can make about him are baseball-related.

Gregg puts the final nail in the coffin of the 2009 Cubs.

Seriously, I almost wasn't even upset when Headley tied it up. When you walk David Eckstein in the 9th inning of a 1 run game, you deserve to get burned. I almost would have been pissed to see him get away wih that.

And lololol at the home run pitch. Absolutely terrible. It's ming boggling that his numbers have been decent in the past. His stuff is pathetic.

That one hurt. I don't mind the hits - it happens, and both Chase and Kyle are two very solid hitting talents. The walk to Eckstein was killer, though.

I have a feeling today is the last straw of some sorts. At the very least Gregg lost the closers job. At the very most, he is going to be DFA'ed.

I have a feeling that neither of those things will happen.

If he lost it, someone else must have gotten it. It can't be Marmol, and Lou was pissed the last time he used Guzman to finish a game

It has to be somebody else, though. It has to. At this point, sending Gregg out there is hanging him out to dry, because he clearly cannot do the job.

Half of something is better than all of nothing.

I know what you're saying, and I don't mind the hits either....as long as they're singles. You can't give up homers in the closer's role, and this guy is addicted to gopher balls. I'd like to know what Gregg's SLG against is this year. It's gotta be over .500. How many homers is that for Gregg? 12? The two things you cannot do as a closer is walk people and give up home runs, and Gregg has been doing both all year.

I think before tonight, ESPN had opponents having a .421 SLG% against Gregg. Which is odd because teams are hitting .224 off Gregg with a .299 OBP going into tonight.

Didn't realize that Ceda had shoulder surgery. When did that happen?

Gregg has good "stuff" but seems to make an a lot of mistakes. In any case, I'd let Guzman close. Not that it matters - 6 back with under 50 to play is a tough spot to be in.
