Gregg always looks shaky. That aside, it seems that whenever you put the closer in a non save situation, it ends poorly.

This makes no sense, unless you think that it's all psychological for closers.

Proabably the worst closer outing I've seen in a decade.

2007 Ryan Dempster says hello. It was hardly the worst, but it was pretty bad.

In a single outing, giving up two bombs and loading the bases in ~8 minutes is about as badly as you can possibly do.

Lou should do something completely crazy and do away with the stupid closer role altogether. Just put pitchers in situations where they have a chance to succeed. Follow the matchups and stop worrying about who pitches in what inning.

Mr. Marmol, please report to the 9th inning.

EDIT: E.J.'s idea is even better. But I put the odds of that actually happening at approximately 0%.

Gregg in the month of May prior to today: 7 G, 6.2 IP, 4 H(all 1B), 1 ER, 7/2 K/BB, .174/.231/.174/.405 against, 5 saves

I remember last year you kept defending Howry pretty hard too TT.

Last year there was no reason not to. Don't forget Howry was pretty damned good for 4 consecutive seasons before last year's disaster, and he had historically been a second half pitcher.

It wasn't until midseason that it was clear he wasn't going to get much better.

And if Gregg ends being as consistently bad as Howry ended up being, there's a problem. If he's going to keep having a bunch of strong outings and then one bad one, eh, it happens.

I think it's a much bigger factor than people think for guys who don't have ridiculous stuff. Guys like Gregg, Borowski, Ryan Franklin, may need that adrenaline boost to be completely effective.

Not really, but that's not relevant. Gregg is an okay reliever, and he's very inconsistent. The previous post is to remind people that for the last two weeks he's been awesome.

Said it the game thread, will say it here

Its best for everyone that Lou is sticking with Gregg, assuming Gregg can get outs the rest of the season. He'll blow a few more games, but in the end its best for the team if Marmol and Guzman fill other roles.

Yea you were defending him pretty hard in the early part of the year but I was just giving you crap. Gregg is maybe ok as a 6th-7th inning guy when you still have guys to come in and bail his ass out, but as a closer hes not ok. When you have already used your "good" relievers, having Gregg is a problem. We have seen him have good days, but we have seen more bad from him than good. Honestly lou needs to start mixing and matching the bullpen a little. Let Marmol get the 1-2 run saves, bring Gregg in to save when you still have Marmol to bail him out, but if those 2 guys have been used we put ourselves in a really tough situation.

Marmol yes, but I disagree with Guz.

False.

Yeah, today was the first time in almost 2 weeks he has given up an earned run, and the second time all year he has allowed more than one.

He's not great by any stretch, but he isn't a disaster.
