Said it the game thread, will say it here

Its best for everyone that Lou is sticking with Gregg, assuming Gregg can get outs the rest of the season. He'll blow a few more games, but in the end its best for the team if Marmol and Guzman fill other roles.

Marmol yes, but I disagree with Guz.

If Guzman were to swap roles with Gregg immediately what do you think the net benefit would be over the course of the season?

Its a false alternative anyway, theres no way Lou would put anyone in the closers role than Marmol, so we can talk about it but nothing will be done

We have seen him have good days, but we have seen more bad from him than good.

False.

Hes had 11 outings without giving up a run and 7 with giving up a run. Right hand hitters are getting on base against him at a .375 clip, thats not good, and has to be a concern. I understand hes pitched well in May up until this point, but hes not reliable.

He gets the job done enough to keep the better relievers in more useful spots.

I've been a fan for 55 years and I'm always amazed that the baseball "experts" (managers and pitching coaches) haven't figured out that you can tell if a closer is having a good/bad day by watching the first two batters. Also, it's ridiculous not to have another pitcher warming up after watching the first two batters. I've heard managers say that it's an insult to your closer to have somebody warming up. I thought the idea was to win games and not worry about somebody's ego.

Yeah, Gregg [expletive] the bed today, but God only knows why Lou wasn't getting someone up after the 3rd hit. I don't care if he's being pissy over the bullpen...the guy out there clearly has nothing and you're still better off getting a fresh arm in there regardless of how shaky the bullpen has been.

Gregg was terrible today. One run could be deadly in many games he'll come into, but FOUR? Geez. I was listening to it in the car and loved Ron's total silence for about five minutes straight while the game started to tank. Thank heavens for Scales and Soriano.

It's a bad outing but I'm not going to throw him to the wolves until I see it happen with more frequency.

The pendulum on closers has swung to the point where we don't consider it a high-leverage spot anymore? If he's going to be awful, then he can't be in there.

But he actually hasn't been awful game after game.

That's fine. That's why I qualified it with an "if."

I just don't like seeing closer be classified as a non-important bullpen spot. It's not.

I think the guy in danger of getting into the Lou Piniella official Scott Eyre memorial doghouse is Heilman. Guzman already seems to have jumped ahead of him in the pecking order and whichever of Wells or Marshall gets dropped from the rotation when Z comes back also probably will be higher on Lou's list as well.

Somewhere in the world....Antonio Alfonseca is laughing.

LaTroy Hawkins was laughing in the Astros bullpen for about 15 minutes until he pulled a LaTroy Hawkins

Shouldn't had let Kerry go. Even at that, that's why I think Marmol would have been a better option. *shrug* Oh well, I guess as of this point, they're just gonna have to do what they can do.

If Kerry Wood were still here and performing like he has been with the Indians I think people would be considering him more part of the problem than part of the solution.

Yep. They've both been awful, but Kerry Wood is more overpaid at this point than Gregg is.

Valid points. I still wonder if him going to the AL isn't a good idea though. Just throwing something around, that's all.

The Indians would be thrilled to trade us Wood and his contract for Gregg and his contract right now
