If the opinion is any indication, Leonard could be a very special player for Illinois. I didn't foresee him turning into such a highly touted prospect when he verbally committed, but after what I have been reading about him lately, I am very excited about the Illini's 2010 recruiting class. I can't wait until November to get Leonard, Richmond, and Head signed.

I have been having a hard time finding a definitive answer as to how tall Leonard is. I've seen 6-10, 6-11, and 7-0. Anyone have any idea how tall he actually is?

Nice to see they have Ben Brust ranked 6th.

For some of you Illinois high school basketball fans, here is a good article about ex High school phenom Ronnie Fields. The kid was an absolute badass, and glad to see hes doing ok in his life.

Thanks for posting that. Ronnie was amazing. I remember how he would be on after the Bulls on the Chicago postgame show. First how the Bulls did and then the Fields highlights.

Yup the kid is probably the best high school player Ive ever seen play. Had it not been for that carwreck, the sky was really the limit for him. That Farragut team was ridiculous with him and KG. I really wish he would at least get a taste of the NBA, after all hes been through, it would be a good story.

And they lost to Manuel. Manuel was so good. Best high school team ever, imo.

actually, i think they lost to harvey-thornton, who then lost to manual. randle el, melvin ely, tai streets, and napoleon harris were on that team.

Yeah, you're right. But they lost to Manuel at some point, that was the game when Sergio got posterized.

Napoleon Harris the Northwestern/Raider linebacker?

He was a very talented basketball player. He played basketball at NU as a walkon and wanted to keep going, but he made the right choice. He had good strength in the lane and great overall athleticism, but wasn't that tall.

he was also valedictorian of his high school class.

On a historical note, I find it interesting that national championships prior to 1939 are acknowledged. Before that year, there was no Postseason Tournament nor Rankings poll to rank teams. It would be like if we played out a College Football season, but there were no bowls or polls to go along with it. It would be almost like a national-scale exhibition/intramurals then. That's basically what those College Basketball seasons were.

An entity named Helms Foundation Basketball in a later year went back and voted the national champion for these "lost" seasons based on the data they had available. It's ridiculous enough that a poll determines the national champion (college football), but to have a poll years after-the-fact to determine the national champion?

Schools such as Kentucky, Kansas, etc. have claimed these National Championships based on these years-belated polls, which have contributed to their total. Northwestern, interestingly, has not. They were voted #1 by this same poll for the 1931 season, but do not acknowledge it. As it should be, given the lack of data and the fact no one knew they were playing for something so substantial at the time.

A lot of schools, Purdue being one, refer to it as a Mythical National Championship. I don't see any harm in a school recognizing that they were named the national champion for those early years, provided that it's put in the correct context.

Illinois has one of these pre-tournament era championships. There is no recognition of it at Assembly Hall or the Ubben Complex. I also find it interesting that the NCAA tournament was less significant than the NIT for a long time, yet the winners of the NCAA earned the right to hang a National Title banner.

They do recognize it in their media guide though. However, they do say that they were named "national champions by the Helms Foundation."

Enjoy Illinois fans. Here is a great article on Jerrance, with quotes from Richmond and Head. I really hope hes here to stay, and takes over for Bruce eventually.

And heres an article about Weber, and his recruiting of 8th and 9th graders now.

I see no harm in doing it that way, but agree it shouldnt be included with other championships to bulk up a schools totals.

i love how weber gets criticized when he starts recruiting kids when they're in 8th and 9th grade. it's just bellyaching from slimeball coaches who have gotten used to just walking in at the end of a kid's recruitment and doing whatever they do to get him signed. now, they aren't going to be walking away with those kids as much, so they have to start working for it.

this is how weber keeps the scumbags out of illinois and it's been working. the people who complain about this are probably cheaters themselves.

There are some reports that Andre Dawkins (6'4" SG) is going to graduate high school a year early and come play for Duke a year earlier than expected. This would be huge as it would give us a much needed third-guard on the team. Good move for Dawkins, too. He will get a lot more playing time as a result.

I haven't followed this thread at all this summer. Has Illinois ordered their championship banners yet?

Your clearly just trying to bait us, but I will bite anyways.

Illinois is coming out of a down cycle, and we have still made the tournament 9 out of the last 10 years. There is plenty of reason for Illini fans to feel good about upcoming years with the recruiting we have done. So yes I am excited, and no I am not ready to order the banners yet.
